Size Comparison: Paper, Foleo, Eee PC

Saturday, June 30th, 2007 by ant

There’s a great virtual size comparison between a regular piece of A4 paper, the Palm Foleo, and the Asus Eee PC that can be found here. It really shows the small size of the EeePC- but also the thinness of the Foleo.

Quick Notes…

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007 by ant

Just a few quick notes-

  1. EeeUser now uses a theme that works in 800 pixel width resolutions.
  2. The Asus Eee PC 701 will start at £199 in England.
  3. The Asus Eee PC 701 to be 299€ in Spain and Portugal- maybe the rest of Europe as well.

[edit] There have been no signs that the $199 price will be higher in the United States or Asia.

Portable external storage solutions

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007 by ant

There’s a great post on our forums that you can read here.

Forum member Romashka details all of the possibilities out there for externally expanding the hard disk storage on the Eee. I found the wireless HDDs most interesting- it would be the perfect complement for the 701 with the 2 or 4gb drive!

A little slow…

Friday, June 22nd, 2007 by ant

Things have been a little slow around the Eee PC world lately- no new information has emerged in the past several days. There’s a lot of blog posts about the device- which shows interest- but unfortunately they simply rehash the basics of the device.

If you’re hungry for more Eee PC video, check this low quality short video out. I suppose it’s better than nothing.

There’s been some pretty good discussion on the forums and on the comments of this website. Unfortunately, for now, you have to use separate usernames for each. We’ll be working on combining the user databases together to make life easier. Please feel free to join in and share your thoughts or questions on the Eee.

Eee will be in Indonesia

Monday, June 18th, 2007 by ant

I’ve had several inquiries as to if the Eee PC will be available in Indonesia and if so where it can be purchased.

According to TrendyGadget, Asus has confirmed that the Eee PC will be sold in Indonesia.

Once the release of the Eee becomes closer, we will keep updates of where the device can be bought all across the world.

Competitor Profile: OLPC XO

Saturday, June 16th, 2007 by ant

The OLPC XO is an inexpensive laptop developed to be distributed to children around the world as a learning tool and educational information device. It runs a stripped down version of Fedora Linux using Sugar as an interface. While many in the media have created a rivalry between the XO and the Eee PC in recent weeks, the devices truly have different intentions. The XO is not intended to be released as a consumer device, unlike the Eee PC. It is intended for the children of the developing world. Recently, however, the manufacturer of the XO has expressed intentions to release a similar device to the consumer marketof the developed world.

Some of the most important aspects of the XO are in power supply and networking. Early prototypes included hand-crank ing mechanisms for recharging the device in locations that do not have proper electric sources. Networking focuses on communicating with other XO devices nearby, as many locations that children will be using the devices in do not have easy access to the Internet.

As of now, the OLPC XO is only $15 less than the Asus Eee PC 701 with much lower specifications and a design intended for children. It should be interesting to see how the device plays out in the developing world, and how a developed world consumer model would look and cost if produced.

OLPC

Further evidence that the Asus Eee PC 701 is actually more expensive than $199

Thursday, June 14th, 2007 by ant

Say it ain’t so, Asus! After an article posted yesterday claimed that the Eee PC would be sold In Great Britain for £199 (or ~$400 USD), a new blog post today has created a rumor that the Eee PC 701 will cost the equivalent of $300 USD in the Philippines.

A post over at MobileCommIT talks about how Philippines-based retailer PC Corner is already advertising the Asus Eee PC 701 as a “coming soon” product. According to them, pricing is as follows:

  • 04Mb Flash ———> 13,999.00 PHP* (~$300 USD) (is Mb a misprint?)
  • 08Gb Flash ———> 15,999.00 PHP* (~$343 USD)
  • 16Gb Flash ———> 17,999.00 PHP* (~$386 USD)

*PHP = Philippine pesos
Could this simply be a price markup solely for certain countries? Incorrect rumor?

Let’s hope the Eee PC stays true to the $199 USD price point.

Asus Eee PC 701 in Britain: for sale earlier and for more money?

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 by ant

According to this article at ComputerActive, the Asus Eee PC 701 will be for sale within the next couple weeks in Britain for £199- which is “confirmed by Asus”- or is it?

The second press release by Asus about the Eee PC claimed that the device would be sold for an estimated $199. This low price is responsible for generating so much of the interest in the device since the announcement. If the price is actually £199 worldwide, it would price the 7″ screen Eee 701 closer to $400 USD- nearly double the anticipated price. It’s hard to believe the device would be doubly as expensive in Britain than the United States and elsewhere in the world.

The ComputerActive article also claims that the device will become available for sale in the next several weeks, earlier than the Fall target set in the earlier mentioned second press release by Asus.

While i would love to see the device available as soon as possible, I sincerely hope that the £199 price is a misprint.

Ultra-cheap sub-notebook comparison matrix

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 by ant

Branko Collin has posted a comment pointing us to his very useful “ultra-cheap sub-notebook comparison matrix.” It’s a perfect tool for finding information and comparing the following devices:

  • OLPC
  • Intel Classmate
  • Palm Foleo
  • Via Nanobook
  • Asus Eee

Personally, I rather like the term “Ultra-cheap sub-notebook.” Thanks Branko!
