Asus Eee PC 701 in Britain: for sale earlier and for more money?

June 13th, 2007 by ant

According to this article at ComputerActive, the Asus Eee PC 701 will be for sale within the next couple weeks in Britain for £199- which is “confirmed by Asus”- or is it?

The second press release by Asus about the Eee PC claimed that the device would be sold for an estimated $199. This low price is responsible for generating so much of the interest in the device since the announcement. If the price is actually £199 worldwide, it would price the 7″ screen Eee 701 closer to $400 USD- nearly double the anticipated price. It’s hard to believe the device would be doubly as expensive in Britain than the United States and elsewhere in the world.

The ComputerActive article also claims that the device will become available for sale in the next several weeks, earlier than the Fall target set in the earlier mentioned second press release by Asus.

While i would love to see the device available as soon as possible, I sincerely hope that the £199 price is a misprint.

Actually, it’s really not surprising at all that it might end up being considerably more expensive in Britain. In case you’re not aware, Britain is known for CE products often being more expensive there than in other parts of the world, and Brits often lament this.
