Further evidence that the Asus Eee PC 701 is actually more expensive than $199
June 14th, 2007 by antSay it ain’t so, Asus! After an article posted yesterday claimed that the Eee PC would be sold In Great Britain for £199 (or ~$400 USD), a new blog post today has created a rumor that the Eee PC 701 will cost the equivalent of $300 USD in the Philippines.
A post over at MobileCommIT talks about how Philippines-based retailer PC Corner is already advertising the Asus Eee PC 701 as a “coming soon” product. According to them, pricing is as follows:
- 04Mb Flash ———> 13,999.00 PHP* (~$300 USD) (is Mb a misprint?)
- 08Gb Flash ———> 15,999.00 PHP* (~$343 USD)
- 16Gb Flash ———> 17,999.00 PHP* (~$386 USD)
*PHP = Philippine pesos
Could this simply be a price markup solely for certain countries? Incorrect rumor?
Let’s hope the Eee PC stays true to the $199 USD price point.

I really like the 7″ model vs the 10″, the former looks a lot better. When will it come out in the U.S? I want to get it as soon as possible!
The two things that really bother me are the low battery life and the ugly black bezel around the screen, they should move the speakers and make the screen 8 or 9″ since it can fit in the frame, its silly to put a small screen in that frame.
I’d get the 10″ if it looked like the sexy 7″ but its ugly in my opinion.

Also, does anyone know what type of storage it uses, like 1.8″ drives? And can the ram be upgraded? I hope there’s a way to get longer battery life.

I’m hearing a lot of different information on the specs throughout. Some sites I’ve read that the 2GB version will be $200.

Rahul: the Eee PC should come out sometime this fall in the USA. Hopefully, the battery life is underestimated or an extended battery will be available.
zunq: Yes, that is the price as quoted by Asus in the Eee PC press release. It may be for the 4gb version, however. We will see!

I think the 2gb is just a test model and the $200 will be 4 gb, and then there will be a 8 and 16 gb option as well.
Sigh, I’m just really sad that the 7″ model has the big black border around it when there’s room for at least a 8 or 9″ screen, was it to cut costs? Its upsetting to see a small screen there when you see there’s clearly room for a bigger one and the 10″ is just ugly.

I am just extremely interested in the 701 but its just the small screen that is killing me. I don’t mind if it even is $300 to $400, I just want the screen to fit the whole frame instead of that black border around it!

with Windows XP requiring at least 1.5gb the 08gb model + 10″ screen looks more feasable in terms of basic gaming (oldschool games or emulated)

I dont think the screen looks that bad, it was probably defo because of price for the 7 inch screen. There is probably a fairly big jump in price to go from 7 to 8 or 9 inch, as maybe 7 is a standard easy to manufacture. I am really looking forward to this

The one good thing about this is that the price jump from 4 GB to 16gb is not that significant. I am thinking of purchasing the 8gb model in August if it does come out then (which I hope it will) and seeing that it is only $43 than the 4gb is good. Something like the 701 is perfect for students or business people that could really use a laptop but don’t want to lug around some 15 incher, or pay the $900 entrance fee to the UMPC crowd.

if moabot naman lang gani na ug 400 dollars diri sa pilipinas, maypag dili nalang na nila i release diri sa pinas….i am sure nga dali rana maguba…gamahal2x lang…to think its spec is not really competitive….naa pamay daghan laptop nga mas nindot pa at the same price of it… ang ako rajud ikasulti, if you people keep bugging yourself with that bullshit stuff, mugara rapud na sila and so they will demand higher price…
