Just a few quick notes-
- EeeUser now uses a theme that works in 800 pixel width resolutions.
- The Asus Eee PC 701 will start at £199 in England.
- The Asus Eee PC 701 to be 299€ in Spain and Portugal- maybe the rest of Europe as well.
[edit] There have been no signs that the $199 price will be higher in the United States or Asia.

That article contains some information that is not confirmed by any asus press releases. It seems to be based on a lot of other reports all over the web. 199 pounds seems liek WAY too much. particularly when in the British article that claims that price there is an ad right next to it for a full sized Dell inspiron for only 279 pounds. 199 pounds is roughly 400 US dollars which is DOUBLE what they said they would be charging a couple weeks ago at computex. There seems to be a lot of misinformation. We should wait for some sort of official word from asus or a more reputable press source.
goatsandmonkeys:
The Spanish press release from Asus confirms a 299€ price tag for the 701 in Spain and Portugal. 299€ converts to just about $400USD.
£199 is just about $400USD as well- I believe we will see that $400USD price across most of Europe.
Yeah, if this comes in at $400 what’s the point? A real laptop only costs $50 more.
This prices are too high in comparison with the US but who knows if they are really truth because here is the Yugoslavian site (Serbia and Montenegro now)
http://yu.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=7379
and says 199 USD.
There’s only so much fun that can be had from juggling rumours, and it’s pretty pointless. The only thing that is almost certain is that the dollar exchange rate will have little influence on the non-US pricing.
Given that, it will be interesting to see if the power supply supports the international voltage range (110-240VAC, 50-60Hz).
The Eee PC is a “neither” product: neither a PDA neither a notebook. Subnotebook is its category. So it’s a mistake to compare it with full-size (and full weight too!) notebooks. If you want to compare it with something, compare the Eee PC with other subnotebooks. Until few months ago a subnotebook cost more than 1,000 US dolars.
I do have an US$600 full-size and almost 3Kg notebook. I don’t need another one. But a less than 1Kg subnotebook like the Eee would be welcome to me, even if it costs 400 bucks.
If I own one I will not buy a new PDA.
Thats right!
Wilson is totally right, everybody keeps complaining about prize. Come on, who expected this hardware to be sold for $200.
Guys, the prize WILL go down. This Christmas it may be around you dream price…
If you were Asus manager what would be starting price for people who cannot wait to buy it… thats right as high as possible.
So please stop your pointless discussion about the starting price in UK.
D.
If a company anounces one thing and then turns around and changes its mind they lose some credibility in my book and would make me hesitant to do business with them.
and it DOES make both the nanobook and the palm foleo look a lot more interesting..
So ASUS, i realy hope you stick to your original word.
When will this be coming out in the U.S? Anybody know please, I want to buy it as soon as possible!
just wondering.. how do we install windows XP if it doesnt come with optical drive? anyways, 4GB is enough for me, provided the OS ( im planning to install xp on this machine) does not eat more than 1GB.. an unused 2GB of storage left is enough for me.
You can install XP off a removable drive, network install or even connect an external optical drive.
(Not official information, just experience)
You can put windows FLC on i run that on my laptop whit 4gb and it runs smooth as a dream…
Windows *FLP I think you mean.
I’m actually using it now on my Celeron 466mhz with 384mb Ram on a 8gb HDD (1.8gb used) with a usable amount of software used.
It runs very fast. Especially when you close the useless services.
I was wondering:
- a 4BG flash drive weights 5-8grams, sized about 3×1,0,4cm (with USB joint and container), so the chip could be 1-2 gram > 100 times = 100-200 gram 400GB.
- a keyboard weights nowadays 20-40 grams
- a thin 12-15″ screen 300-500 grams. I guess a micro projector could make even bigger “screen” with lower weight.
Why a laptop still produced to be 2-3 kg?
I am just a muscle brained sportsman, sorry to post a silly question.
anyone knows when it will be abaliable in spain????
