OLPC: Future price and WiMax
July 11th, 2007 by antCheck out this short article over at DigiTimes about the OLPC XO’s future. The price of the XO is anticipated to drop to $50 by 2009 along with the addition of WiMax connectivity.
Why am I posting this?
- $50 is really cheap, $150 less than the EeePC
- The OLPC right now costs somewhere in the range of $135-175, not expected to fall to $100 until 2008. Could the EeePC 701’s price fall considerably by 2009 as well?
- WiMax would be the perfect addition to a future EeePC
It should be interesting to see if the XO’s target price can be reached, and if it is ultimately sold to the consumer market of the developing world. It should also be interesting to see how further cheap ultra-portable-low-cost-computing devices become in the next few years– and how used devices could be even lower priced.

i think the 50usd price point is for orders > 1 million (like the current 175usd, it’s not for individual unit orders) besides, the olpc is ugly anyway (like the classmate pc) but the eee pc is pretty sweet looking. by 2009 i’ll bet that there’ll be a lot more competition in the umpc market. at least the olpc and eee pc will force competitors to offer aggressive price cuts.

In a screenshot of the eee pc 701, it showed an icon with the caption 3g. Does that imply that future versions may ship with a cellular radio? A good indication that WiMax may be included in the future.

Isn’t the OLPC is non profit and was projected by engineers for free? You can’t compare this prices at all, Asus wants to make money, Negroponte wants to change the world, I’m not sure this will end poverty, fight AIDS and bring peace, but …
