if you follow this link you will find the after-article discussion on the great first look of the Asus EeePC 701 from NotebookReview that was mentioned in the last news post here.

Most notably a user, GRZ530, claims to have one of the Eee PC 701’s already.

  • The windows key has been replaced by a Home key
  • Price base $250, configurable up to $500
  • Two year warranty
  • Will begin to be distributed in August

More importantly, he has new & great pictures!

Looking at the keyboard, there is no bluetooth sign anywhere anymore, so wireless connectivity with cellular phone, bad luck :-(((

  2. ac Says:

is the memory expandable beyond 512? havent seen any article mentioning it.

  3. sally Says:

I expect memory to be soldered on the board for cost-reduction reasons, and not to be easily expandable by inserting some module.

    I wouldn’t count on expanding.

    One question is left,
Will EeePC be capable of playing videos?

  5. lr Says:

With those specs it will be able to play videos. Not probably 720p (or higher) videos though, but standard definition surely.

sally sometimes it’s cheaper to use connectors so they can remove and replace faulty parts, but your inclination is probably correct.

Niskyspy yes it can play videos and probably in high def too.

Well, I am sold on this unit. This little baby is the best thing for traveling or taking notes in class. Asus better make a bigger 8 or 12 cell battery’s for it. Or I’ll have to go and get one of the expandable battery packs for laptops.

  8. nate Says:

The resolution of the laptop is suppose to be 800×480. This corrisponds with the 480p HDTV resolution and normal DVD resolutions.

    480p is 852×480 for the 16:3 ratio or 702×480 for 4:3
DVD is 720×480 (generally). It compresses nicely down for NTSC TV resolution (standard ‘def). NTSC (USA/Japan) is 648 x 486 and PAL (EUROPE) is 720 x 486. But you see it’s difficult to translate directly to computer becasue those use rectangular pixels were computers use square. So 648×486 on a TV is a different shape then 648×486 on a computer.

Probably since this device has rather limited disk space what would be cool is if somebody writes a script to take regular DVDs and re-encode them into a format that fits the screen. Take de-interlacing into account and strip off any excess information from the video stream. I figure if you encode to half resolution.. that is something like 400×240 then you would be able to stick a few movies on this device with very little loss in quality. For high quality dvds then keeping the resolution X by 480 would be nice.

So 480p shouldn’t be a problem for it, which is about the correct resolution for it. The issue may come up with H.264 vs Divx or other older Mpeg4 compression.

H.264 is what is used on stuff like blu-ray and whatnot. It’s also known as Mpeg4-AVC. The current popular way to encode movies is using Mpeg3-asp, which is also known as divx or xvid for different variations and codecs.

Well Mpeg4-AVC is nicer because it creates somewhat smaller file sizes then Mpeg4-ASP. The trade off is that Mpeg4-AVC uses a lot more CPU. It’s similar to the difference between Zip or Gzip versus Rar compression formats.

So at stuff like 720p resolution the laptop probably can handle that resolution fine using mpeg4-asp, but may have issues with mpeg4-avc. At 480p then it shouldn’t be a issue. Don’t know for a fact until I try it out.

For re-encoding video for the EEE it should be a dead simple thing to setup a script using Mencoder to do it. Just pop in a DVD, run the script, and copy over the resulting *.avi file.

For storing movies you could put them on a microcard, the internal flash, external USB flash key, or SD card, or external USB harddrive. For a 2gig flash key or SD card you should be able to fairly easily stick two full length movies at DVD resolution with nearly 100% quality.

    Great Nate.

    We could use Eee also:

1 - Get a 4 ports UBS hub, plug a 17″ USB monitor, a USB Mouse, a USB full sized keyboard, a USB CD/DVD drive and you have a very effective “docking station”

2 - Go into a Cafe with hotspot and use the Eee as a Voip phone (including video…) to call home

3 - Get some Video Game Emulators and transform Eee in a portable videogame

    Anyone, more ideas?
