NCIX “Canada’s Premier Computer Store” has several models of the Eee PC 701 online for preorder with an ETA of “Late September 2007.” While I don’t usually post information about preorders, this is different because they seem to spell out solid specifications and pricing as follows:
- ASUS Eee PC700 Celeron M 7IN 800X480 WLAN 10/100 DDR2 256MB 2GB LAN Linux Notebook (Eee700/2G/256M) (25881) $257.38 or 284.99CAD
- ASUS Eee PC700 Celeron M 7IN 800X480 WLAN 10/100 DDR2 256MB 2GB LAN Linux Camera Notebook W/ Bag (Eee700/2G/256M/Camera) (25884) $285.10 or 329.99CAD
- ASUS Eee PC700 Celeron M 7IN 800X480 WLAN 10/100 DDR2 512MB 4GB LAN Linux Camera Notebook W/ Bag (Eee700/4G/512M/Camera) (25885) $388.05 or 439.99CAD
The question is: are these the final prices for the United States as well, or do they include some sort of Canadian import tax or upcharge?
I’m sure a lot of readers will be upset with the idea that the lowest model Eee PC 701- the $199 ultra-portable notebook- is really $257.38 with no camera, 256mb of ram, and 2GB of disk space.
I’m inclined to believe this is accurate as it includes the sku number (italicized). The deafening silence from Asus as well seems to support the price increase…

This sure is disappointing. The Eee PC is now nearly twice as expensive as originally announced. As much as I want one I won’t be played for a fool. I plan to wait and see what they come up with in the second generation.
I guess its worth another 120 dollars for 2 Gb additional memory and 512 RAM.
With 2 Gb it seems you can hardly do anything wityout a separate large USB stick.
I trust that NCIX’s info is accurate. The staff are always honest when they post on the forums; they always bluntly tell us they’re under a NDA or they just plain don’t have any info, so I see no reason why they’d start making things up now.
The thing that gets me down the most is the 256 MB of RAM on the mid-range version. Having to hunt down a potentially expensive DDR2 SODIMM to upgrade to 1GB is going to be a pain. The cheapest one I’ve hunted down in Canada is $75. Combine that with $50 for a 4GB SD Card, and we’re hitting $455 + taxes for the midrange version with a combined total of 6GB of storage. It’s something I’ll have to ponder for sure. Not an impulse buy anymore.
If those specs hold, then it simply means to save up for a little longer, and get one of those lovely Samsung Q1 Ultra devices (http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/mobilecomputing/qseries/np_q1uf000suk.asp).
I played with one a while ago and struggled hard not to buy it. At $1,200 it’s a bit of a bummer, but it’s a really great part, and no doubt more useful mid-term than an underpowered $400 subnotebook. I had hoped the $400 Eee to come with at least 16GB of Flash.
If that would translate to 190€ for the cheapest one, I’d still be willed to buy it for reading pdfs etc. at the university.
But since it wont: Bye.

I hoped to get at least 1Gb RAM/4GB Drive (by replacing 512MB SODIMM) for ~$350.
Or 16GB for ~$400.
I’m afraid now it’s impossible.
If this prices will remain, this device won’t gain popularity. So ASUS will definitely lose money spent on development because of low sales.
This is a good deal. All the people who want to buy a big laptop for $400 please go right ahead, that will leave more EEEs for us. For $259, all you need to do is replace KDE with evilwm, install wine and you’re good to go. This thing can be used for reading PDFs, listening to music, silent server, mini desktop and if 2GB is not enough for you, you can buy 2GB flash for $20. That’s more than enough for me. Now if they would also sell GPRS module that would be great

It’s a little bit disapointing… 512mb seems to be the minimum… why a 256mb version !

I think I am going to get the lowest end model if I can install my own 1gig sodimm. I don’t need a bag or a camera or lots of flash.
If the sales terms will be these, I’ll not buy the Eee PC, too expensive for these technical specifications.
The specs are weak for the price. I can get a cheap laptop for about 50-75 bucks more. To bad this started out as a really killer product.
OK, I’m out. I can’t justify the price/performance. $350 now gets me a full notebook (new, not reconditioned).
I thought ASUS was creating a new market; they are instead trying to compete with an existing market with a non-competitive product.
This isn’t rocket science. This will fail in the market, and ASUS will end up abandoning it. Been there, done that, not gonna happen again with my money.
FYI: NCIX will not ship outside the US or Canada if anyone was going to order an EEE PC from them Europe-side etc…

I haven’t been this disappointed since Gigabyte announced their ramdisk for $50-$75 at a computer show and then decided to price-gouge after people got really interested in it. That wound up selling for more like $150-$175 when they finally released it. Gigabyte can go to hell and so can Asus.
Doesn’t CA have an import tax that the US doesn’t have? If it were 15% the price in the US would be approx. 220,240,330. If it were 20% the US price would be approx. 205,230,310. Not much different than what was announced.
I just want a small, cheap, quiet Linux PC. I’m seriously thinking of Zonbu
at http://www.zonbu.com. $250 or more with various subscriptions. Not really portable like eee. Also need monitor and keyboard which I have but might be issue for some.
I don’t really trust “online storage”. I like to have a tangible disk.
Anyways, I don’t truly see the pull to the Zonbu. If you’re going to get a cheap computer, you could easily grab a P4 off the classifieds or even local auctions. I saw about 50 P4 Compaqs go for $150 Canadian each at a Police Auction. They even had a mouse, keyboard and CRT monitor included.
The only thing special the Zonbu has going for it is that it’s “green”. Which is a stretch for computers. Especially with a lot of computers being ROHS compliant just so that companies don’t alienate their European clients.
So I posted the info + link to this page to Gizmodo. Not sure if they will post it or not but if they do this should get attention of Asus and maybe they will change their damn pricing to the way it was before
At this point I doubt the pricing will change. It sounds as if they’ve alerted their partners about the product’s specs and pricing already. The NCIX guys knew a lot more than I thought they would, so it seems to me as if Asus is sealing the deal. Although the silence from Asus could mean that they are hesitant to make the current prices official. Perhaps they are doing some calculating. Trying to figure out about how many now aren’t going to buy it because of the price.
I just ordered the one with cam w/256 ram. I just hope the ram is upgradable.
Anyway, I don’t know why people are considering “technical” specs for this machine. Yes, you can get a full machine with 100 more. But are you buying the technology or the portability when you buy this notebook ? This thing is 7lbs.
You are compromising specs with weight with the EEE. That is something I am looking forward to with this one. I have a powerful machine at home that I could use.

I’m still mildly interested, it’s really no more expensive than I thought. I expected the min config to be $200 and hoped an 8GB storage model would be under $400.
What kills me is that the screen is still 7″, I would so rather thae the 1000 model with the 10″

What’s the smallest real laptop I can get instead of this for under $1000? Doesn’t even have to have a fast processor.
If I get the eee I’ll have to upgrade the storage for WindowsXP I’ll end up sinking upwards or $600/$700 in to this, which would be just fine. But now I still have a 7″ screen in a 10″ lid.
7″ is fine for cheap, but when I soup this up, it starts to look like a polished turd.
I was so want the eeepc if I could get the 8GB or more storage.
For what it’s worth, I believe they took the SKUs out of the search temporarily so that they could add separate Black/White SKUs for the two higher end models.
…I just hope that the memory is easly upgradeable to 1GB, for all the Eee PCs offered (and for those wondering, no I’m NOT gonna run windows
). I can get away w/ an base model because I have a bunch of SD cards and portable flash drives. Plus web cams don’t strike my fancy anyways. =P
Can’t wait til they add the white version so I can order my EeePC. I went to do some reaserch on NCIX and it’s a really trusted company with great reviews + they own actual stores which makes it even more trusted. YEY, how come Amazon doesn’t have EEE for sale yet.

Asus never said that Eee with come with any kind bag.
So I guess the upgraded battery was just a hoax, cuz there is nothing about battery size, so that means its not one of the specs that will differ between the Eee’s.

I knew the $199 couldn’t happen, but the specs keep getting weaker and the price keeps getting higher. I still really love the idea of a small/light, inexpensive Linux laptop that I’ll use exclusively for writing in cafes and other places, but I’m not overpaying for one. I can wait until some other company brings one out that’s reasonably priced for the specs, or I’ll just spend a few extra hundred bucks and get a heavier but more useful laptop to tide me over.

To get the Eee Asus announced, you have to spend twice as much as they promised. Uh, yeah, no thanks. For $400 I’ll just drop another $200 and have a real computer (and a thinner and lighter one at that).

I can’t stand the design of the Nanobook. The Eee is easier on the eyes in my opinion.
And as long as we’re on the topic of the Nanobook, it doesn’t have any release date range whatsoever. It’s still vapourware as far as I’m concerned. Even VIA calls it only a “Reference Design”.

I’m really excited for a 7″ inch notebook. I’ve been working off a Palm Zire 72 for the last 3 years of university and the screen, memory and features are a lot limiited (has bluetooth but no wifi) and I paid $400+tax CAD (note including accessories like case and keyboard).
Plus NCIX’s Canadian prices on notebooks do cost a bit more than other online retailers. I guess we’ll have to wait and see when it comes out.

Compared to $700 for a Nokia tablet or $1000 for an UMPC choking on Vista , this still looks like a pretty good deal to me!
Let’s hope they keep working on the platform and bring other screensizes, memory/storage sizes, etc….

Offering or suggesting something then as time goes along it change to not be worthwhile to do the deal. Or in this case a purchase.

It not running X or anything complex. Basically it stock command line. But for the “Whitehat Hacking” I was planing on. And from the first pass on home brew info for a DS. I can use that over a 701 for some of my upcoming projects…. Also can drop Linux totally if I want and go native access… Sorry I digress…

From the initial announcement. Its could be that they assumed Bill of Material cost, etc on the unit would be this but turned out to be that… Sounds like Management, Development and Sales were not together on this at all at the start… Thats industry … does ocure… Have seen it over the last 30+ years at various times….

A 199.99 is a magic price point… Could go further in on that number but they write books and College Courses on that very strange break even point…

So currently looking at the Dell m1330, however ever since I caught saw this notebook. I’m not leaning towards this. Not only this is 1/4 of the 1330 price, it suits my needs very well. wireless, word sheets, IM, slim/light …

For those of us in the US, prices will most likely be about 10% cheaper than they are in Canada.
Still with the price the way it is, it is high enough for only though who really “need” a small and light pc to afford. I can say with confidence that if it was under $250 with at least 512MB’s of RAM and 2GB’s storage I would buy one even though I have a couple desktops and a notebook.
It would just be another cool little gadget to carry around, like the PSP or DS.

I think the people doesn’t will buy it, if the 250$ price not include 512Ram and 4 GB Flash place. Over price will not good busines for Asus. So, the first news was about the EeePC 701 in June, that 199$ include the 512/4/webcam.
