EeePC 700 / 701 at HKCCF 2007
August 25th, 2007 by antIt looks like Asus had a few Eee PC’s at the Hong Kong Computer & Communications Festival 2007 today.
One of our forum users, mcclane, posted some great new photos of the device on his blog that can be seen here.
The following is the text of an e-mail sent by Wynn, an attendee of the festival:
“It is a white unit comes with black keyboard without built-in web cam. According to the Asus representative there, the final specs and retail price of the EEE PC 701 has not been confirmed yet. As he heard, the unit will be available for sale here (Hong Kong) sometime this October.
Its design has a shadow of the Fujitsu Lifebook P7010 (which I use at work) except it looks and feels way more plasticky.
The size of the keyboard keys is a bit smaller than the Fujitsu P7010 and it is still comfortable to type with but definitely for prolonged word processing.
The touchpad is small but responsive. Too bad the EEE PC 701 only has one mouse button and the click-feel on this mouse button is quite flimsy comparing to the keyboard.
This EEE PC runs on Linux and it is quite fast when running the pre-installed spreadsheet program.
To me, the 7″ LCD seems larger than I expected. The screen brightness is okay and it didn’t give me too much trouble to read the icons in the Linux simple-mode. After trying the unit, I turn my head back several feet away and I can still see the icons clearly on the screen. So I think I am able to live with the 7″ screen on this EEE PC.
I hold it up the unit and noticed that it runs very warm and I can feel the heat transmitted from the vents on the rear left side. Just hope its plasticky body can withstand the transmitted heat in the long run. “
Thanks Wynn for passing on the info!

From the specs sheet (http://bp2.blogger.com/_AnB08Ffvex4/RtBEO8Cx3aI/AAAAAAAAABc/WhlcZDQYx3A/s1600-h/CIMG1907b.jpg)
We see the floor unit is running
SSX264M8-J6E 512MB DDRII6408-6E 512Mbx8 667MHz 5
(http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:Xy4ibrOpw4oJ:www.sis.com/support/support_memory_16.htm+SSX264M8-J6E&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a)
So at least it looks like that RAM will be user upgradeable.
BTW, the comment box on this site is WAY too small.

Nice observation… hopefully the flash modules are also upgradeable. They sure used a Top end model for demo…

Where’s the modem?! Where’s the modem?! Where’s the modem?! Where’s the dial-up modem!?
And will it work?? Will it work?? Will it work?? And will it work with the pre-installed linux? Didn’t see any mention of one on the pre-order site.
August 25th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
Modem? Who the heck still uses a dialup modem these days?
August 25th, 2007 at 11:30 pm
ure gonna have to use a usb modem
August 26th, 2007 at 1:13 am
All the spec pages I’ve seen say it comes with a modem. Check the “wired communications” section. I’m sure it would actually work, or we would have heard something about that by now.
August 26th, 2007 at 7:07 am
the boot don’t would be of 15sec?! on the video it’s seems like 25sec.. with an solid HD 25 sec?!
August 26th, 2007 at 8:39 am
If you look at the spec sheet again, it says that model is using a 16GB SSD HD. I really didn’t think these laptops would use DDR2 I’m surprised because they’re based off 910 intel chipset, I thought that chipset only supported DDR1

First of all; black keyboard on white Eee? Are they drunk?
Second; I am mainly disappointed about the heat (and fan running). Was looking forward to a computer that was completely silent. Plastic-feel is perhaps not surprising, but too bad. Can’t cost many bucks to make a sturdy plastic casing.

touchpad having only one button? wtf?! the apple idiocy even on linux pc?
August 27th, 2007 at 8:17 am
This formerly promising project is getting more and more disappointing.
Not only it is said to be sold in Europe for about 300€ (400$!!!), but its specs are lowered at the same time and finally it’s getting UGLY now!
This turns out to be a bad joke in the end and I regret every minute I spent searching the web for informations about the eee during the last months.

Still, if you look at it as a PDA, it´s a nice not-too-expensive thing. Music, videoconference, web browsing, MSN (with keyboard) in a small package. I´d buy it anyway.
(And then I´d add an external drive with WinXP installed in it and boot from there for other apps)

Macarelo:
Videoconference? To bad they removed the camera then. :p
August 28th, 2007 at 2:20 am
Where there’s USB, there’s always room for a camera… (and thus videoconferencing, YouTube, etc.)
I for one, have been hoping for something like this. Beats the pants off of my $300 PDA (and that was the cheapest one with WiFi included).
August 28th, 2007 at 5:45 am
they removed camera from cheapest model. I don’t need it so I’m glad it isn’t there.

Squishy:
Although I am disappointed by price in Europe being something more like $350 or $400 instead of original $200, AFAIK there is no other comparable machine (UMPC, Foleo or whatever) priced below $600. So even with proce around $400 EEE must be taken into consideration.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:38 am
Like Tonda said, when you compare the price of the eee to other similar products the price is ok. Everyone is just bitching cause asus said it would retail for $200. Asus did jump the gun..they probably wanted to make it 200 but with prices of ram and flash memory fluctuating so much lately its hard to come up with a price for your product and still make a profit. Personally I will wait for the final specs and see what the final product will look like, but for 300-400 bucks it sure beats a palm t5 or t/x which is around the same price (in Canada anyways)
August 28th, 2007 at 11:21 am
I agree the part still comes at a nice price. However, it s now nearing 50% of the price of a much nicer, and probably much more usable, UMPC. I think it will be less than half as versatile, useful and sexy as a Samsung Q1 Ultra, for example. For me, it means saving for a UMPC, I think. I think I knew that all along, but would probably have bought one if it really had been $200. With $350+, I think more than twice.

nothing new on yahoo.
August 28th, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Some people like the missing camera. That’s the coolest thing for me. Cheap, light videoconferencing and word-processing at the $200 price-point was great. $250+ for no camera is a no go. Jeffery, WiFi PDAs can be bought new or refurbished for $200.
August 28th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
well, 2gb is still ok for me provided they could lower the price to the initial hype price - 199. with the SD slot i’ll put in 8GB SD card that’ll cost me less than 100 dollars and if the memory is upgradeable, if it comes with 256mb i’ll upgrade to 1gb for another 100 dollars but if it comes with 512mb i’ll just leave it there.
August 29th, 2007 at 12:47 am
I hope they have a demo at the upcoming Comex in Singapore! The black keyboard is a turnoff for me. Still deciding between this one, the Kohjinsha SH6 or the Via Nanobook.
August 29th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Craig,
Good point. But here in Japan, the cheapest PDAs are $300+.
I’m hoping the EeePC is as configurable as it appears in all the pictures we’ve seen (I’ve seen the interface in Chinese and in English thus far, meaning there’s a chance for a simply switch / add-on to Japanese).
August 29th, 2007 at 10:18 pm
I’d rather see the screen changed to a full 800×600 to go w/the price increase.
August 30th, 2007 at 4:53 am
What do you think about Mivvy UM400 aka Gigabyte U60 aka Arima UM650?
Reviw, in Czech only, sorry, but specs should be understandable: http://smartmania.mobilmania.cz/index.php?ind=reviews&op=entry_view&iden=176
It is sold here for 16150 - 16800 CZK without VAT, which is $800 - $830.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Sure hope they change the mouse…
1-button mouse was one of the reasons I didn’t buy a MacBook (to use with linux).
August 31st, 2007 at 1:35 am
I think that I read somewhere that although it looks like a 1-button mouse it is actually a 2-button, depending on which side you are going to press it……
August 31st, 2007 at 1:08 pm
probably reason of black keyboard: it may not have enough parts to make a demo unit for HKCCF

I think you missed the fact that that Tosshit has a 15.4″ LCD widescreen, eh? Not really a small tossable lappie, eh?
