So Much For an Early to Mid-October Eee PC Release…

Thursday, September 27th, 2007 by ant

According to an article in DigiTimes, Asus has once again delayed the Eee PC 700 and 701. Now, shipments are not expected to begin until the end of October or early November.

The reasoning? They want to add more software.

…Huh?

It’s odd as working prototypes of the Eee PC have been around since the original announcement way back in June. Reviews keep popping up in many different languages of production quality devices. Asus keeps insinuating through the press that shipments are right around the corner, only to continuously delay shipments further. Now, they’re delaying because they want to add more software? What’s there to add? Why will it take so much time?

One must wonder- what is really going on? Specifications are still not solidified, pre-order prices are higher then the original announced prices, and Asus continues to keep us guessing and in the dark about everything.

What’s the deal, Asus?

Rumors from the Inquirer About the Various Eee PC Models

Monday, September 24th, 2007 by ant

Rumored information from the recent Intel Developer Forum has been posted in an article on the Inquirer website about the upcoming Eee PC model lines. They speculate that there will be at least four different varieties:

Models: 700-C / 700 / 701 / 701-6

700-C: 2GB, 256MB DDR-2, no camera, 2cell battery, no wifi, wired ethernet, 56k modem, $199 price (they also say this model will be available on tender only…)

700: 2GB, 256MB DDR-2, no camera, 4cell battery, wifi, wired ethernet, no modem, $239

701: 4GB, 512MB DDR-2, camera, 4cell battery, wifi, wired ethernet, no modem, $299

701-6: 6GB, 512MB DDR-2, camera, 4cell battery, wifi, wired ethernet, no modem, $399

We are not fully sure how accurate this information is, however the inquirer does claim that it is straight off of an Intel data sheet. If this does turn out to be accurate, the 2GB/246MB boost on the 701 model seem to be a solid upgrade from initial speculation. However, if the speculation that the 700 models have soldered on SSD and RAM components is true, you would pretty much be forced to buy the 701 if you wanted 512MB of ram- which isn’t so bad as you’d technically be getting the speculated “$399″ model for the $299 price.

But of course, as always, this is just more speculation!

Part 2 of French Eee PC 701 Review

Monday, September 24th, 2007 by ant

The folks over at the French speaking blogeee have posted the second part of their Eee PC 701 review. The French language version can be found here, while a translated version into English can be viewed here. They do a great job of illustrating the exact size of the device, and provide many new pictures.

Russian Review on Eee PC 700

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007 by ant

A Russian technology website got a hold of a black Eee PC 700- and they took it apart! For the complete review in English, click here. 3DNews have mistakenly labeled the device as a 701- it is not- as you can see on this photo. It is in fact the Eee PC 700- you can see the 700 on the top of the information label. Plenty of pictures and plenty of information (even if Russian doesn’t translate too well to English via Google Translate…) Enjoy!

For those interested in seeing the Eee PC in black, check out these pictures via AnandTech of the Intel Developer Forum 2007. I must say, it really looks great in that color!

Also, check out this review in French full of pictures of the white unit for comparison. The author does a nice job of showing the details of the unit AND the carrying case. Enjoy!

New Hands On Review of Eee PC

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007 by ant

Arne at unicap-imaging just forwarded the address to his Eee PC hands on review to me. It’s a great look at the device and he is one of the lucky few to already have a pre-production model as the webcam software uses the unicap toolkit. His system is the 900mhz, 512MB, 4GB storage space variant.

Most interesting in the review:

  • On his 4GB model, 1.3 GB left to the user [does this mean for those who opt for the 2gb variant, less software will be installed?]
  • SDHC card reader
  • Replaceable RAM up to 1GB (See this picture, solid proof for those doubting yesterday’s news)
  • 5200 mAh battery, 3-4 hours
  • much, much more including lsusb output and installed applications information

Thanks, Arne!

Confirmed by ASUS: Eee PC RAM will be Replaceable

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 by ant

There’s been a lot of talk on the forums about whether or not the RAM in the Eee PC will or won’t be replaceable. We even reported recently that the RAM wouldn’t be replaceable. We were wrong!

I now can confirm, thanks to ASUS, that the RAM is indeed replaceable. There will be one slot, and it can be fitted to 1gb maximum memory. Great news for many of the readers out there who were sincerely worried about not being able to upgrade.

Current Eee PC, Next generation Eee PC

Friday, September 7th, 2007 by ant

Before even releasing the first Eee PC (or even it’s official specifications), Asus are apparently comfortable shedding light on the next generation Eee PC intended for release in April, 2008.

According to an article in Digitimes:

  • plans to ship 200k-300k Eee PCs by the end of this year
  • 3 million Eee PCs annually starting next year
  • supplies are sufficient for now, LCD and battery are the most difficult to obtain
  • first batch of Eee PC’s in 2nd half of september, the 4gb/512mb ram variant
  • 2nd generation Eee PC in April 2008, Intel’s Merom processors, fanless
