PS: On an unrelated final note, Palm has just announced that they’ve killed the Foleo project, at least for now.

Submitted it to the submit nesw link but haven’t seen it yet in this site but it looks like ncix had taken the eee pc page down. no results returned from search and no more preorder info. I wonder if the specs/price are changing again?
well, looks like the eee has a little less competition now that the foleo’s been canned. read more here: http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/04/palm-kills-the-foleo-dead/
lol, i JUST noticed that the news post had a link to engadget, i thought it was just a statement… haha.
The article says “Preinstalled Windows XP loads in few seconds”…
Windows? Anyone knows something about this?
I was surprised by the windows thing too.
so I guess you can choose Linux or Windows.
Gret!
Asus had long announced that windows xp would be supported. Unfortunately neither vista nor mac-os-x are supported due to the “weak” cpu power.
Supported yes, but preinstalled is new for me.
I can’t wait to get my hands on this Eee.
The reviewer says this thing has a resolution of 640×480. The photos clearly show it is 800×480 widescreen.
“The translation into English can be found here.”
Depends on how you define “translate”. Some gems from the article:
“Nicholas Negroponte, of the MIT by all means, for years he has been coming giving the twig with children’s to computer: A portable PC of low cost (initially him conocia as the 100$ to computer although of that already swims remembers) to dedicate it by the end of education, specially in developing zones where it seems to be that most important it is than arrives the sooner the digital evangelización.”
“The screen is pequeñita, like the one of a UMPC although the device is greater than a juguetito of these.”
…it’s just an automatic translation made by Google… you can’t pretend too much!
It’s better than nothing..
You are cierto. (this is a Google automatic reply
When ASUS is finally ready to sell the eee701, where will I be able to buy it? Can it be pre-ordered anywhere yet?
http://www.citrusmicro.com has three different models list to pre-order. Has details on product and a price. They are not charging anything to pre-order. I bought Asus product from them in the past… only the 701 series so far…

It actually pre-installed windows drivers. Linux OS is installed. I learned this from http://www.citrusmicro.com new listing for three of these models.
The cheapest model listed was:
Asus Eee PC 700 2GB Flash Stoarage 256MB Memory Lan & wireless (no camera)
List Price: $259.99
http://www.citrusmicro.com/webdocs/Items/Details689.cfm
Is THIS the orginal product that was announced as selling for $199?
Are these guys the only retailer taking pre-orders? Is this then the confirmed NEW MSRP by Asus? Or is there another model for $199? I hate this back-channel implied info! When will Asus come forward and set the record straight? Are they reneging on the $199 PC price or will they release the 199 pc? And if so, WHEN?
I’ve read somewhere the first batch coming out will not have the $199.00. That was expected later, date not given. I have not come across anyone else taking pre-orders. The good thing is they are not asking for payment or payment information, just contact information.
Thanks Paul. If its true that they will introduce the product line with a $259.99 model then they’ve lost me and many others. I’d rather pay 349.99 and get a fully loaded Windows laptop, available from time to time on sale, and everywhere on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving)
@Danny (and all those others): the 199 model is meant for governments and educational establishments only. Also, please remember that you cannot compare Eee with any conventional cheap laptop (they are BIGGER).
And that is exactly why I am interested in the Eee, not because it is cheap but because it is small and lightweight. For me it could be the ideal second computer (next to my desktop machine). The Eee is small enough to be carried with me anywhere a go and large enough to have a useable keyboard.
more info from citrus micro updated yesterday!
At least this white Eee had a WHITE keyboard as it should – not a black as seen on some other pics.
Black keyboard for a white Eee is a horrible idea.
@ Wolfwood. Its about money. They were creating a new price category. They blew it. Technology is like fruit. It gets old quickly. The latest and greatest is around the corner, and at lower prices. Gee wiz, oh boy, that’s cool technology is for the fanboy nerds at Gizmodo, like the idiots who stood in line for the iPhone. Whom Apple just slapped in the face 10 weeks later with a $200 price cut. The only valuable technology is stuff that works and is cheap. And with convrgance there will soon be so little differnce between product categories; hell, the latest iPod (iPod Touch) will brows the wed via Wifi for 299 MSRP and the Nokia n800 does it now for $350 street price. and its a nice 800 x 480 screen. If 300/350 is the sweet spot in 2007, the pricing wil lgo lower. I started as a software developer in 1990 and spent $2000 on a PC and it was normal. Now look at prices on the low end. At this rate, in 2017 kids will be getting a PC as a prize at the bottom on your box of breakfast cereal. My summary: those who pay high prices for consumer electronics are brainwashed dolts who need to go out and get a REAL life.
Hi all!
Very interesting information! Thanks!
G’night
