Current Eee PC, Next generation Eee PC
September 7th, 2007 by antBefore even releasing the first Eee PC (or even it’s official specifications), Asus are apparently comfortable shedding light on the next generation Eee PC intended for release in April, 2008.
According to an article in Digitimes:
- plans to ship 200k-300k Eee PCs by the end of this year
- 3 million Eee PCs annually starting next year
- supplies are sufficient for now, LCD and battery are the most difficult to obtain
- first batch of Eee PC’s in 2nd half of september, the 4gb/512mb ram variant
- 2nd generation Eee PC in April 2008, Intel’s Merom processors, fanless

That’s a long time away… That’s why I pre-order my eee pc 701 at http://www.citrusmicro.com It’s going to fit my travel needs perfectly. I can not wait to get one on my hands.
P.S. just to let you know, you will find the specification for three of the models at citrus as well.

3 million is crazy for next year, much less 300,000 this year. The iPod was released in Q4 2001, and took until the third quarter 2003 to reach 3 million total sales.
Asus has little advertising (at least in the US) other than word of mouth. They have very little (if any) presence in retail stores (the kind that sell big numbers…the kind that don’t stock mobos), and have no retail stores that I can see planning to stock them.
3 million in a year is sky-high dreaming up in the clouds, even if it’s an instant sensation…which it won’t be if you can’t see it in the middle of the other laptops at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, absolutely everywhere, for $199.

“The second-generation Eee PC will use Intel’s Merom processor and offer longer battery life.”
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070906-asus-sets-ambitious-goals-for-eee-laptop.html
Now, the Merom is a Core 2 Duo proc (64 bit capable). And although a mobile one draws a LOT more power than the current Dothan CPU. So this “second generation” EEE will be nothing like the first one.
PS: The size of the commentbox on this site is a pathetic joke.

Get real, these sales numbers are a pipe dream at the new price point and specs.
September 8th, 2007 at 11:57 am
I think they are relying on large orders from governments and education establishments in order to reach those numbers. And, of course, the Asian market will prolly suck these in at an alarming rate as well. Let’s see how many units they can spare for the western world…

Yeah, these are world-wide figures, I believe. Given the 1 billion cheapos concentrated in one or two countries, I think these figures are quite reasonable. Afterall, it is everyone’s dream to carry a small laptop. To have one available for so cheap (relatively, as compared to the $1000+ alternatives from Sony, Toshiba, IBM, Fujitsu, etc.), it is actually not that hard to believe that it would do well. In case you guys don’t know this, but Americans are just about the only ones who value power and price above portability, as can be seen by the trends in laptops seen in different parts of the world.

well it is my feeling that the prices for the eee pc will vary substantially from one country to another, especialy between US and Europe…..

Hrm, interesting. The next generation will be fanless? I might as well wait half a year for the silent beast.
September 9th, 2007 at 1:30 am
Oh, and ship =/= sell. You can ship 300,000 worldwide as the beginning stock or something, doesn’t mean they actually have to be sold to someone (though, they’ll have to sell if we want them to continue)
September 9th, 2007 at 7:32 am
They are dreaming. At currect prices/specs it will be a flop. Sure, it will less, but 1/10th of what it would have if they had not screwed it up.
New version screen size and other specs?
- Nevermind perhaps, we obviously can’t trust Asus on price, on specs, on time of delivery. Oh wait, thats pretty much on all points we can’t trust Asus.
Too bad.

I’m not bothered and don’t feel betrayed or what-the-hell-ever. This machine isn’t my ideal portable, but it’s as close as anyone has ever come.
My basic plan is to throw a minimal Debian install on it and use it as a portable wireless ssh terminal (with a keyboard usable for programming — that’s the catch). I’ve been wanting something like this for a long time, and here it is. Finally.
I’ll buy a first-gen model as soon as its available. When second-gen comes along (and I’m actually glad to see Asus thinking ahead and having this much confidence (kinda like Apple)) I’ll sell it or give it to someone who can use it, and get a new model.
It’s a whole computer in a nice, neat, thoughtfully designed little package, for less than a lot of video cards cost these days. That’s awesome.

“The Osborne effect is exhibited when a company’s revelation of information about future products results in customers not purchasing (or delaying purchases of) the current offering. Its origin is a purported suicidal marketing mistake made by the Osborne Computer Corporation in the 1980s when its announcement of a successor to its Osborne 1 system led to a sharp reduction in sales, and the delay of the successor system created a revenue vacuum from which the company did not recover.” –Wikipedia, ‘Osborne Effect’

Why all the delay? im so upset of the price increasing almost every press release…
September 10th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
Is the Uk getting more than the US?
Asus Eee: OK. Wait. What’d He Just Say?!!?
September 10th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
Mike, that sounds like fake to me
September 10th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
A lot of free advertising. You trusted the lies and you’ll get the real product when they want at the price they want. Like the iSheeps now we have the eeeSheeps (last one sounds even worse).
September 10th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
It’s a ZDNet *columnist* saying that. Who claims he got it straight from Asus. Go figure.
Everyone, however, loves under-promise, over-deliver!

The eee has created a new niche, ie inexpensive, reasonably well equiped, very portable computers. It clearly needs refinement with it’s ability to manage larger windows and it’s cramped keyboard. Small refinements that are expected in subsequent generations will have these products flying off the shelves. Also, the market is not limited to the US as the IPhone initially was. The fact that this is available and usable throughout the world will lead to reaching the 3 million sales goal handily so as long as the next gen eee addresses a few correctable short falls.
