There’s been a lot of talk on the forums about whether or not the RAM in the Eee PC will or won’t be replaceable. We even reported recently that the RAM wouldn’t be replaceable. We were wrong!
I now can confirm, thanks to ASUS, that the RAM is indeed replaceable. There will be one slot, and it can be fitted to 1gb maximum memory. Great news for many of the readers out there who were sincerely worried about not being able to upgrade.

Good stuff, good stuff. Nice to hear
This makes the base model a lot more appealing. Stick a 8GB or larger SD card in the slot and you are all set.
RAM is not a hard drive!
My point was now that the 256MB base model will feature upgradeable RAM it will make the low end model more desirable. The fact that it has a 2GB SSD is the only remaining issue which an SDHC card would remedy.
Think before you post.
As long as you don’t cite your sources, or your sources do not wish to be cited, the old saying holds true: believe it when you see it. Don’t get excited over speculations again.
hmmm this information makes the entry 2gb more of a target ….. i think your right docprego.
What is the source of this information? It seems everything about the Eee needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
I wonder how many other surprises are now lurking. Perhaps that monster battery life is true?
I’d like to hear that the SSD is user replaceable, that would be awesome news. Now that the RAM is confirmed replaceable, as I said earlier the base model is looking very appealing.
I wonder if the card reader is fast enough. I want to stick in an SDHC and run programs from there.
crow – I think everybody wants to do it, but I think it depends more on speed of card. USB 2.0 has 480Mbps, but cards, I saw, had 6MBps only write/read speed:( So I think it will be slower than HDD and much slower than SSD.
What type of RAM it is ?
“I wonder how many other surprises are now lurking. Perhaps that monster battery life is true?”
Yeah, but the car battery does take some of the mobility away
I’m thinking of using a usb stick for storage. I read about the Sony Micro Vault Excellence usb stick 4gb. It’s more expensive than an SDHC card but they claim it has a transfer rate of around 23Mbps. 4gb is the largest capacity Sony have for that type of product.
More RAM is definitely good news.
So now there’s a possibility of running beryl on the EEEpc?
SWEET! This definitely makes me want to save a bit of money and get the 256/4 version, then i still have a webcam, and a good amount of ram and hd.
dope!!! This is extremely good news to hear.
But how easy is it to install more RAM onto a laptop (or any PC for that matter)? I’ve never done it before. =X
OK. But for the “have-not” people how about asking Asus if any of these models come with a working du modem? A BIG concern for some.Thank You.Nick
One thing to watch on those transfer speeds: Mbps is *NOT* the same as MBps! Megabits per second vs Megabytes per second. There is a large difference also between the theoretical transfer rate of USB 2.0 (480Mbps or 60MBps) and the actual sustained rates. Those 6MBps SD cards? They are 48 Mbps, which means they are faster than those Sony Micro Vaults, over double the speed. Pa very close attention to terminology or you’ll end up in a confused funk.
Great news.
To alx: RAM is very easy in replace, it’s just a ’stick’ embedded into a slot. Remove the old and put in the new.
Please could writers try to get it right. B is Bytes, b is bits. 8 bits make a Byte. G is Giga, g is gravity. ie gb would be gravity bits.
For a new technology, gb is awfully old and American.
This news is really cool!!!
I’d like to buy one!!!
The only way we’ll know any of this is true is when the product comes out.
Yep, crow. And it’s taking them a long time..
I am staring to read mid-October. Has anyone else read this bad news as well?
“As long as you don’t cite your sources, or your sources do not wish to be cited, the old saying holds true: believe it when you see it. Don’t get excited over speculations again.”
The post’s title denotes that he’s citing Asus itself. It’s not a verifiable citation, but it’s a citation nonetheless.
will the 4gb flash memory whether or not be replaceable ?

the only model with replaceable ram is th 4gb
))
galaxy 701….NONE of the surfs 2gb or 4gb are upgradeable…the memory is soldered to the MB. This should help you with your decisions on which model to purchase.
> NONE of the surfs 2gb or 4gb are upgradeable
NOT TRUE. I have a new 4G Surf serial number 7B…. that has RAM installed in a standard socket (it is missing the second PCI-E socket). It upgraded to 2 GB quite nicely. Unfortunately, you apparently have to check the machine. It looks like Asus has dropped the socket and picked it up again, probably due to the flak of non-upgradeability.
Keep looking up…
