Eee PC Will Not Ship To Resellers This Friday

by ant on September 19, 2007

There are rumors going around that ASUS will be sending a certain retailer the first shipment of Eee PCs on this Friday, September 21st.

I contacted ASUS for more information, and the response was:

“Friday 9/21/07 is not right. Â We are looking at early to mid October.”

There you have it…

nooo…who could expect another delay…i am sooooooo disappointed…bad bad asus. what about christmas?

Noinlair September 19, 2007 at 6:31 pm

I’m going to be middle-aged and have children by the time the EEE PC comes out.

Asus admits that most of the initial shipments are likely to be the “mainstream” $369 or $399 configuration.

If you do get an Asus laptop for $259 this Christmas, it’s going to be because Asus gave you $110-140 cause they are selling the $259 laptop at a loss.

And the OLPC XO-1 consumes 10 times less power for a larger better sunlight readable screen, better WiFi range and features, and faster resume from standby and faster optimized applications.

Oh great… so now early to MID October. I’m pretty sure we’re gonna be hearing early November pretty soon.

esecasco September 19, 2007 at 7:38 pm

so CES 2007 Asus showcases the XG Station, which was supposed to be released quarter 2 2007.

It is now Quarter 3, and there is no more word on the XG Station.

My guess at this point is that this is going to be vaporware as Duke Nukem Forever

After seen this ####%&$$ delays I have decided to go for a sharp em one and also use my old nec 780.

It’s frustrating that somehow Apple can cause something to appear instantly, and we’re waiting months after an announcement. I’d told people, excitedly, about the $199 E, and now it appears that not only have they effectively bait-and-switched a huge amount of users by belatedly announcing that it apparently won’t be released in the US, but no model will be available anytime near the window that they promised. Is this a dream machine or a pipe-dream? And will it lose its market if the Google Phone actually turns out to exist first?

Wow this just gets worse.

This sucks sooo many balls. Apparently I won’t be getting this close to my birthday as I had hoped- oct. 5. I guess I might have to look into a new Present then. iPod touch anyone?

Karl September 20, 2007 at 2:22 am

I just hope they can have it out before Black Friday.

Apple has often delayed products, too, but they have a different information policy. They usually keep it a secret until launch date. I think that’s smarter than Asus’ way, because the longer the time, the higher the expectations, and the higher the expectations, the harder it is to fulfill them. ;-)

Anyway, I’m also getting impatient, because I was hoping to start using this machine soon. I need a mobile writing device ASAP, so I can’t wait forever.

Hmm, I am interested in the EeePC too, but the frequent delays make me look for alternatives. Ebay has quite a few laptops too…
(Also, it is not clear yet when it will be available in Germany :-\ )

does anyone knows if there are going to be any localised versions in europe or simply a pan-european version?

Does anyone know if this unit will boot off of the USB port… so that if we have one of those USB devices, or USB powered mini-hard drive device that we can boot a different version of LINUX from that “external” device?

docprego September 20, 2007 at 9:01 am

I’m getting tired of waiting too but there are NO other laptops available in this category. If you want a tiny laptop with an equally tiny price tag there are simply no other options.

Brendan September 20, 2007 at 9:09 am

That’s the release price. If it’s not released in your country, eBay isn’t so forgiving… look up iPhone on ebay.com.au, it’s up to $1000 >__

CitrusMicro has already contacted me and taken down my card info. for my 701 preorder. They ssaid I should have this bad boy in about a week and a half if all goes to plan…

I will be contacting them today to try and get an update!!

I just want my tiny ass laptop so I can pull in many tiny asses ;)

Eric September 20, 2007 at 10:25 am

If you buy a laptop at Ebay, don’t forget that you might need to get a new battery, too. Sometimes offers there are quite good, but the corresponding battery costs over 100 Euro!

Anyway, traditional laptops have a hard drive, which is not a good option for me personally. I hope the EEE will be launched simultaneously in US and Europe. I’d hate having to wait even longer….

David September 20, 2007 at 10:53 am

FYI…The unit has showed up at Intel’s IDF..ZDNet has photos..

Vaporware?

It’s sad to see delays AND the price go up.

The little $200 miracle laptop is something I am starting to give up on.

Just got of the phone with Asus USA. According to them, the offical launch date is next week. What day is not clear yet as they wish to have sufficient supply in the US to avoid panic buying and Ebay deals.

No one has reviewed JUST the 2GB version performance, in order to see if 2GB Flash and 256 MB RAM is enough to do many things. If this option is slectected then is it going to be limiting in any way where we feel confined because we can’t upgrade the 2GB Flash SSD ourselves to a larger version (and upgrade the RAM to more RAM as well)?

So –
How much RAM memory and Flash Memory does it take as a minumum to just RUN?

Then what freedoms does the 512 MB Ram and 4GB Flash SSD give us that the 256MB RAM and 2GB Flash SSD does not?

Is the Flash SSD using ECC and Wear Leveling technology? What is the manufacturer of this Flash SSD in these various Eee PC units?

If we chose the lower cost Eee PC then would we be locked into a low performance option that we would be “stuck” with (and maybe frustrated with at some point as well)?

Also – If we loaded DVD viewing software, and K3b BURNER software, with external DVD burner, can we watch DVD Movies and make CDs or DVDs (for storing photos, etc).

With the 512MB or 1GB RAM can we run Xubuntu or Ubuntu Mobile, and use VMWare Server available from Ubuntu repositories to run other OS as well?

Groklaw Reader September 22, 2007 at 8:49 am

Oh – and does the bios allow for us to boot from a USB device (flash or external USB powered HD) … or from the SD memory option as well? What are the bios boot options? Anyone?

A complete YouTube video showing all the “details” is better… I will not preorder or order without this information (I am not ruled by impulse buying that is induced by Dopamine level changes due to “new product hype” (Dopamine is why folks buy time shares on vacation when they would never buy one at any other time… Dopamine is what drives impulse shopping buyers to spend money on stupid stuff.

Haider September 25, 2007 at 9:46 pm

Is this a real product, because Asus does not have it listed on its site, and those selling it are not found reseller ratings .com, so where do we find a trusted seller. Any information would be most helpful. I was going to buy a PDA for my wife for school, but this seems a better bargain at the same price.

AuxNeed October 17, 2007 at 2:27 pm

I spoke to Asus and they said it is shipping end of October, so let me know if you find any retailers out there.
