Black Eee PC at Intel Developer Forum 2007

September 20th, 2007 by ant

For those interested in seeing the Eee PC in black, check out these pictures via AnandTech of the Intel Developer Forum 2007. I must say, it really looks great in that color!

Also, check out this review in French full of pictures of the white unit for comparison. The author does a nice job of showing the details of the unit AND the carrying case. Enjoy!

    Just a quik ?
Will the browser be able to render todays websites, which use javascript, dhtml, php, etc ..
    would this site look correct:
    http://www.bloomblooms.com

  2. turn_self_off Says:

its firefox, same as can be installed on windows.

if the page renders correctly there, it will render correctly on the eeepc.

and that black one looked oh so sleek!

  3. Yesh Says:

That black one is so sexy.. I’m at a dilemma though between the black getting greasy (as you can see in those) or the white getting dirty easy….. oh the choices..

  4. knightmare Says:

Tsumi88 spotted that there is no ram or mini pcie door. Hopefully they will allow for expansion in the final model.

  5. Heiko Says:

“Availability should be sometime in October, with widespread retail availability sometime by the end of this year or early next year.”

  6. turn_self_off Says:

    hmm, no “door”?

i wonder if the sockets will still be there behind the plastic.

if they are (and i have a feel they may will be as its more expensive to have two variants of motherboards around then two plastic shells) then one maybe be able to upgrade, but voiding the guarantee in the process.

still, even if its only the shells, they still have to run two lines. bah…

    Hello!
There is a russian preview of eee pc

    and second page http://www.3dnews.ru/mobile/asus_eee_pc_701/index2.htm
    Interesting:
that sample this non- upgradeable RAM :( see pictures of motherboard
    Sorry for my English.
    Good luck.

  8. waste Says:

well I smell another delay in the air. “widespread availability by the end of the year” isnt what we want to hear. We will see if asus will deliver finally

  9. yada Says:

@terror: I tried bloomblooms and it works just fine in konqueror and firefox.

Just got of the phone with Asus USA. According to them, the offical launch date is next week. What day is not clear yet as they wish to have sufficient supply in the US to avoid panic buying and Ebay deals.

  12. Andreas Says:

Wow! It does look really good at this point. Espcially the black one :)

  13. sup Says:

“they wish to have sufficient supply in the US to avoid panic buying and Ebay deals.”
It cannot be so serious… I mean - there are 400 registered users on this forum, which I suppose is the biggest one worldwide for EEE. I think demand cannot be so high.

  14. Mark Says:

i can’t freakin wait to buy one of these.. does anyone have any idea what resellers will be selling these things once they are released? I can hardly contain myself..

  15. esecasco Says:

Here’s a site with a huge user base, and with lots of interest in the eee PC :

  16. sup Says:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/search.php?searchid=1971719

hm, one post a day… it doesn’t look like like huge user base…

  17. admin Says:

sup: website traffic is substantially higher than the amount of registered users on the forum.

Furthermore, you’ll notice a fair amount of “guest users” on the forum at any time.

  18. sup Says:

I know, but number of registered users is more trasparent for me, I’m not Admin. It’s hard to say if it will be success or not. Especially with speculations about RAM etc…

  19. JHosche Says:

I came across this in another forum - and they had a link from a russian website that took one of these apart. They found the ram and the flash soldered on and not upgradeable. (they do repeat that they just have a test model though so that might not be the final case)

Anyway, you can check it out - with pictures - at

    http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.3dnews.ru%2Fmobile%2Fasus_eee_pc_701%2F&langpair=ru%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools

  20. turn_self_off Says:

hmm, i really hope this isnt the final design for the cheap version.

but i would not be surprised if its asus’s attempt at making people go for the more expensive one as it can be upgraded (somewhat).

if so, way to kill the userbase asus…

  21. cclo Says:

As far as I know, the black Eee is 700 (not 701) and it is the low end $199 model. It’s RAM is non-upgradeable. The white model (701), which costs > $250, has a free mini pcie slot and a ram slot for upgrade.

  22. Wolfwood Says:

Could just as well be a prototype model. There’s no need to make factual statements when we haven’t seen the final product.

  23. Groklaw Reader Says:

Again, what do we “give up” as far as use goes if we buy the 2GB Flash SSD and 256MB Ram unit?

What are the bios boot options (USB device, SD card boot)?

Will we be able to run a USB external DVD player to view Movies (is the software downloadable or pre-loaded to allow this)?

Can we use an external US CD/DVD writer and K3B to burn CDs or DVDs?

Why do we need the 512MB and 4GB Flash SSD version?

Who is the manufacturer of the 2 or 4 SSD they are using and can we upgrade it (and the RAM) ourselves?

  24. knightmare Says:

I think the forum is a more appropriate place to discuss these kinds of issues.

  25. cclo&Groklaw Reader Says:

    Get a clue you two.

cclo: As far as you know…you know nothing

Groklaw Reader: Why are you spamming the comments section with forum questions?

  26. clarifications Says:

according to allasus.com the memory is definitely upgradeable (if none of you caught the hint already from a previous entry).

  27. cclo Says:

Ya…. I know nothing, but at least I read Taiwanese forums.
There are many people in Taipei having Eee in hand for testing or other purposes. They’ve posted many consistent comments about Eee on various forums in Taiwan. They don’t write comments in English do not mean they don’t exist or they are not credible.

In the forums people are also discussing about the black “no door” model mentioned here. Several people pointed out that:
    black model = Eee 700 (low end) = non-upgradeable
white model = Eee 701 (mid to high end) = upgradeable

Regarding the SSD upgrade, there is one guy mentioning that he has successfully tested Eee with a 16GB mini pcie SSD and it worked. Of course, it’s for the white model, not black.

  28. turn_self_off Says:

    thanks cclo :)

hmm, was there not something about the 701 being available in both black and white?

still, looks like this may get more expensive then expected…

  29. Groklaw Reader Says:

Well, Not spam. Didn’t know about the forums. But, it seems that no one knows what the heck is going on here at all. One says this, others say that?

I am glad that someone got the larger SSD working. I just can’t understand anyone building a unit with the Flash SSD hardwired to the unit as it only makes sense to be able to upgrade the Flash SSD and the RAM to a bigger number for both (but, battery power might suffer maybe, Hmmmm)…?

  30. knightmare Says:

It’s called a discussion when “one says this, others say that”. Some are facts and some are opinions.

If you think no one knows what’s going on then you don’t have to be here.

  31. Reader00 Says:

I can’t agree with cclo any more. I am reading those Taiwanese forums too. And what cclo said is certainly true. Testing machines are out there at Taiwan. Many testers have already done lots things, taking apart the machine, extending storage, installing WinXP,watching movies, connecting to wifi and 3.5G network … Although these are all true, we don’t know if the final release is the same as the testing machine or not. But it’s common sense that there should not be large changes between public testing model and final release model (except critical design faults ofcoz).

  32. Groklaw Reader Says:

I tested the N800 and gave it back due to no JAVA, no included keyboard, and about 20 other reasons. Of one was… Hmmm, true to all devices…Why can’t someone just use a battery system that allows you to use those AAA or AA 15 minute rechargeable batteries that I use on camera, audio devices, etc. 15 minutes is nothing to wait for use (3 hour battery gone, then what, you gotta lug around more proprietary batteries and weight just to use the thing)? One battery for all devices is all that is needed. Of course what would be maybe sweet is that if you could have a multi battery device and power your other devices from it (of course if would have to be rechargeable in 15 minutes still as who hates a dead battery (with photos the party could be over and you are out looking to buy a new battery).

  33. x94scorp Says:

@cclo- It is news to many of us that someone “tested the Eee with a 16GB mini pcie SSD and it worked.”

Can you provide a link or more info? Thanks much- if this is true, you should post a topic in the forums as many would be interested.

    Thanks !!
