A Russian technology website got a hold of a black Eee PC 700- and they took it apart! For the complete review in English, click here. 3DNews have mistakenly labeled the device as a 701- it is not- as you can see on this photo. It is in fact the Eee PC 700- you can see the 700 on the top of the information label. Plenty of pictures and plenty of information (even if Russian doesn’t translate too well to English via Google Translate…) Enjoy!

well, i just have to say that after all these delays (i’ve heard that it is now delayed til october, see inquirer.net. even if it isn’t, the perfect niche laptop is not what was promised months ago. i’m gonna get a mac with my money instead
(just have to save a little longer)
Using XP…sweeeeeeeet…
So this one has the bottom looks complete sealed – no RAM slow or PCI-Express mini slot.
Just when are going to get any formal spec?
RAM not upgradeable.
DIRT!
Makes that tiny Toshiba I saw in the store today for $850 look like a more logical option.
I like that I see how the flash memory is soldered on with the packaging that it has. I wonder if you could piggyback additional flash ICs to expand memory capacity. Another alternative would be to remove the ICs and replace them with higher capacity devices. I wonder if the SM223 chip would require different software for that, or if the chips could just be replaced and it would recognize the additional memory…
Oh the joys of meddling with electronics.
Hmmm, no mention of ECC or Wear Leveling Flash features? I hope they chose a Flash that has ECC and Wear Leveling? I sure wish that the Flash and RAM was easy for the user to upgrade and that was also easy for tech service folks to fix or replace as well…
Groklaw Reader: On embedded Linux machines, wear leveling is often performed by the filesystem itself (eg. jffs2), so don’t bother worrying about it.
New MacBooks are on their way with teh release of Leopard. Small and aggressively priced. No way will they be close to the same price as the eeepc but at the very least I’ll hold off pre-ordering an eee…
I read that review, and I don’t understand, the processor is capable of 900mhz, but is permanently under clocked to 5xx something? That would make a huge difference, I have old laptops running 500Mhz, I don’t want to bother spending the money if this is fixed that low. Also, I thought the specs were set-in-stone? Why did this model lack the upgradeable ram and the PCI slot underneath?
@Competition…
Aggressively priced mac books is an oxymoron. You pay too much for the style with mac products, and I don’t think there is even a place for mac-related discussion as competition for a laptop like this one. Mac is making tiny expensive things, whereas this is small for portability, not so much for style, and is definitely aggressively priced.

check the various specifications of all 4 different versions of the eee. my favorite is the 299$ (about 213 euros hopefully!)
awesome, thanks nikolaos!
So the 701 is the model with the upgradable ram, PCI slot underneath, and built in WIFI? so the model used in this russian interview must have been a 700 like they said.
I didn’t realize the two were so differently equiped! Maybe Eeeuser.com should publish an article on the front page explaining the differences. Maybe they did and I’m just being a jerk!
But either way, thank you. I was looking to get the 300 dollar model anyway, and it looks like it’ll be exactly what I thought it would be.
But how about the processor, and the mentioned underclocking? The english translation of the russian was rough, but is it just linux underclocking when not in use to save battery, much like the PSP does, or is 900 the absolute max speed, and it will normally run at 500 and can’t be overclocked? I’m confused.
The translation pretty much spells out that they had a pre-production model, and that while the production model has a 900MHz chip, their model has an 800MHz chip which was further downclocked to that 500. I.E. theirs is pre-production and had a slower processor than the production models will have. But it does lead me to think (mind you, THINK) that the 700 series will have soldered chips and only the 701 series will be upgradeable. Check out the AllAsus, NCIX, or CitrusMicro preorder websites for info on the supposed differences between 700 & 701, as well as their supposed prices.
The Inquirer article:

Hey guys. there is no pci express card slot….dang…i asked to allasus.com about it.
@picklefart
I must have just been confused then, thank you. Good to know it’s not what the final model will have. Yeah, I’m actually planning on pre-ordering at Allasus, and I assumed their specs were correct, thats why this confused me so much.
I can’t imagine the 700 series would sell well at all, but since they’re not even coming to the US, I’m sure they’ll be popular in poorer countries.
Either way, I’m excited for the 300 dollar model. Thanks a lot for the pointers, really cheered me up.
so then the one in the anandtech article was most likely a 700 also?
Of course nobody’s sure of anything but my guess is that one at anandtech was a 700.
OK, I don’t give a crap about PCI-E CARD slot, if it has a mini PCI-E onboard connector it will be fine, either one will need a breakout to enable me to plug in PCI-E x1 devices. (PS *all* video cards are compliant down to x1, it is PCI-E spec that they must be. And there have been reviews on PCI-Express bus scaling, check them out if you like.)
Miles, I don’t think the EEE will have has the slot you are thinking of. If the 701 has anything it will be the mini PCI-E slot, which PCI 1x devices will not fit. Look at this site to see the supposed slot (I think will be available in 701 models but not 700 models)…
http://unicap-imaging.org/unicap_eeepc.htm
and this one to see what one of the things that fits it looks like…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:A_PCI_Express_Mini_Card_and_its_connector.jpg
There is no PCI-E x1 device slot even rumored, Miles. We’re talking about a miniPCI-E slot…which is different from what you’re talking about, and also different from an Express Card.
I thought that I couldn’t make myself any clearer.
PCI-E is a specification for transmission and connection, AFAIK the Mini-PCIE slot and the PCI-E x1 connector found on a regular PC have no differences signal-wise. The PCI-E x1 supplies +12v and +3.3v, both of which I am fully prepared to supply seperately.
The signal travels along 2 pairs, and has multiple grounds, I don’t see a logical reason why I couldn’t make a video card connection to the laptop.
Those pictures of the 700 clearly show the mini-PCIe (It has a wifi in it.)
There are adaptors from PCI-E to Mini-PCI and Expresscard, and from Expresscard to PCI-E x1: http://www.adexelec.com/pciexp.htm#PEX1-MINI
Ugh, I thought I couldn’t be more clear, PCI-E cards should work for this laptop with proper power supply and adaptor.
Ah, my page finally loaded and I can see this picture:
http://www.adexelec.com/pciexp.htm#PEMINI2X1
Notice the form of this adaptor, it converts Mini-PCIe to standard PCI-E x1.
ALL standard PCI-E cards should conform to a PCI-E x1 slot, see this review where an 8800 card was run at x1 x2 x4 x8: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/03/27/pci_express_scaling_analysis/page3.html
It looks like this should be doable with off-the-shelf hardware, in fact any laptop should accept a video card upgrade this way, providing there is proper bios support.
I do realize this will render the screen useless, this is more for embedded system/HTPC front-end uses, and of course will make a sweet project for the busted-screen EEEpc’s that will turn up on eBay (These will be given to kids because of their low price).
can xp be used in eee pc 4g (701) i just bought it and I dont know how to install some software I downloaded. any body knows, please email me anjo828@yahoo.com
thanks…
