Two Reviews and a Green Eee PC
September 30th, 2007 by antHungry for more Eee PC reviews? Check out these links:
- “The most complete EeePC 701 real test”
This is actually a post from a blog written in Chinese about the Eee PC (Chinese, translated to English), you can see the original here. It links to a several-part review written by another blogger, jeremY. The sections are: - polocanada’s Reviews: Part 1 and Part 2
Posted as comments on this website, great insight into the device. It’s especially nice because it’s honest thoughts from a user who doesn’t have much experience with Linux. Nice work!
Oh, and check out this green colored Eee PC 701: Chinese or translated English

The green Eee PC link corroborates other colored Eee PC pics on the web. There were pics of light/pale pink, green and blue at some trade show.

From where are people getting these? Why can’t I get one?
September 30th, 2007 at 8:06 pm
Philip: looks like they’re various development or testing units that people are reviewing on their personal blogs- don’t feel bad- I can’t even get one!

The light green makes the unit look like a childrens toy. I would go with white or black. Or if they happened to have a navy blue or red color might consider.

Probably you’ve noticed already:
1. The memory chips are customized by Asus so are not user-upgradeable.
2. There’s a 16G model that’s priced at $299.

Asus is apparently at this very moment working on completion of the website regarding the eee pc, see:
http://event.asus.com/eeepc/en/index.htm
There is room (not yet used) for “product details” and a “”quick guide” and under “support” there is a eee pc FAQ in place.

According to thius: http://www.hwupgrade.it/news/portatili/asus-eee-pc-posticipato-il-lancio_22727.html
they postoned the eee at the 15th of November.

On the Asus site is now a page with specifications for one 701 model, the 512MB DDR2 / 4GB SSD with webcam and WiFi.:

As we can see in the site, the EeePC (as a product) is heavily based on software, so if they are delaying because software issues, I think it’s not far from reality…

And yes, it has a reset Button… (I didn’t hear about it so far)
“2: Please use a spiculate pin to depress the small reset button at the bottom of the notebook.”

The EeePC may prove to be cheaper than the OLPC for those who do not belong to the the OLPC target group (third world children).

The start of the OLPC “Give 1 Get 1″ scheme is set for November 12th, the new release date for the EeePC is set for November 15th.
Probably no accidental coincidence.

That’s an example why we have so many contradictory info…
Where did Italian article get November 15th?
http://www.hwupgrade.it/news/portatili/asus-eee-pc-posticipato-il-lancio_22727.html
They are referring to this article:
http://laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=3352
That doesn’t say November 15th, only “The availability of the Eee PC will more-or-less coincide with these XOs.”
“More-or-less” could be late October, for instance.
Just take everything with a grain of salt…

Chinese whispers! I can’t help but think half of the news comes from blogs and forums like this one and just gets lost in translation then picked up again by it’s original source as new news!

Admin,
“eee” appears to be link farm spam…
October 1st, 2007 at 3:53 pm
… true… as well as advertising of its own articles just reporting obsolete news captured around… what’s the deal here ?
October 1st, 2007 at 5:37 pm
@7
That site might be the default homepage for the eee, what do you think?

something tells me the 701 will have upgradeable memory, while the 700 will not. the 700 is probably aimed into much the same area as the olpc, while the 701 is aimed at the general consumer.

sup: no I was talking about the DDRII memory. The review in chinese said that the memory chip looks the same as the usual upgradeable ones, but the author was told it wouldn’t work if one simply buys one on the market and replaces the original one: Asus ‘customizes’ the memory for the sake of running Linux. The author was hoping that Asus will soon offer memory chips with larger capacity at reasonable price.
Hope this helps.
October 2nd, 2007 at 9:19 am
Well, here is the word-by-word translation of the original chinese version: “…according to the official release the Eee PC will feather built-in DDRII memory of either 256MB or 512MB. The memorys are specially customized due to the specification of the motherboard and are not user-upgradeable. To solve the problem of upgradability one can only hope that Asus or other manufactures will soon offer compatible products.”

I have to say that, unless my memory starts failing me, I’m sure that the author of the review(s) in chinese definitely modified his phrasing and technical description within the past 24hrs. I suggest that his comments on the upgradability of the DDRII memory should be taken with a pinch of salt …
