I have to say that, unless my memory starts failing me, I’m sure that the author of the review(s) in chinese definitely modified his phrasing and technical description within the past 24hrs. I suggest that his comments on the upgradability of the DDRII memory should be taken with a pinch of salt …

Well, here is the word-by-word translation of the original chinese version: “…according to the official release the Eee PC will feather built-in DDRII memory of either 256MB or 512MB. The memorys are specially customized due to the specification of the motherboard and are not user-upgradeable. To solve the problem of upgradability one can only hope that Asus or other manufactures will soon offer compatible products.”

sup: no I was talking about the DDRII memory. The review in chinese said that the memory chip looks the same as the usual upgradeable ones, but the author was told it wouldn’t work if one simply buys one on the market and replaces the original one: Asus ‘customizes’ the memory for the sake of running Linux. The author was hoping that Asus will soon offer memory chips with larger capacity at reasonable price.

something tells me the 701 will have upgradeable memory, while the 700 will not. the 700 is probably aimed into much the same area as the olpc, while the 701 is aimed at the general consumer.
