Oct 16 announcement, End of Month in stores, Double RAM?

by ant on October 12, 2007

According to this article from DigiTimes, ASUS will indeed announce the final Eee PC prices on October 16th. It does officially confirm that the $199 price point can only be reached by contract orders, as expected. An initial batch of 10,000 units will hit Taiwan markets after the announcement. By the end of this month, Eee PC’s will be available in the BestBuy / Newegg channels (as suggested in the last news update.)

Furthermore, x94scorp on our forums noticed a new update on the official ASUS website where the RAM specifications of the devices have all been raised. The 8G model has 1GB of RAM, the 4G and 4G Surf models have 512MB, and the 2G Surf has 256MB. Have the specifications been raised? Interesting!

I saw this change now in the eeepc site, but when I was writing about this, you wrote the post! its a good news.

Juan Camilo October 12, 2007 at 2:26 pm

Well, it’s good news as long as they keep the same prices for these higher specs…

thehbcrew October 12, 2007 at 2:38 pm

I hope all the 399 preorders come with the highest upgrades. Originally it was suppose to have the 8gb flash, so seeing as its called the 8g maybe the specs will 8gb again. Id ratehr have the larger drive and small ram, thats cheap and easy to upgrade.

Lee October 12, 2007 at 3:00 pm

I hope the rumors are true! I wonder if we will all be camped out in front of Best Buy in line to buy this?

Niskyspy October 12, 2007 at 5:09 pm

Finally some solid info :) . Now I am getting ready to buy it, but first I want to know the price…

May October 13, 2007 at 1:33 pm

I hope the site is mistaken and the 8G has 8GB

Ronald October 13, 2007 at 4:16 pm

If the 8G has indeed 1GB of memory and 8GB flash storage, I expect its price will be between $450 and $500.

Ronald October 13, 2007 at 4:26 pm

The basic (or ‘pure’) model, with 2 cells battery, only modem (no WLAN), no camera and possibly no upgradeable memory, probably the €199 model that is available by contract orders only, is not presented anymore in the products specifications table.

JDK October 13, 2007 at 8:43 pm

Are they drunk, at Asus. They call a version 8G, but it has 4G SSD?!

Bob Carroll October 13, 2007 at 10:40 pm

I’ll still be waiting for a 1024×600 version.
If I wanted a 800×480 portable, I would buy the embedded Linux-based Nokia N800 (link provided) at US$239 with free shipping. It is not a full PC but it is even more portable with extra features like bluetooth and touch screen.

Ronald October 14, 2007 at 7:02 am

The information on the products page has been corrected. The 8G has indeed 8GB SSD

(At the bottom of the specifications table is still the typo “Specificatioin”.)

Lee October 14, 2007 at 9:25 am

After reading the Asus article again, I am now officially excited. Can’t wait till the end of the month. Ain’t none of y’all gonna beat me to get one. (smile)

When I look at the configurations it seems like the ‘Eee PC 4G’ unit with the 3.5 hour battery time is the best way to go, unless spare batteries are reasonably priced….

May October 14, 2007 at 1:10 pm

I’m wondering who is moron in charge of updating the site. I would not be surprised if tomorrow the 16GB model is included….

PJE October 14, 2007 at 1:43 pm

May, I assume from your comments that you’d have no problem creating a web page in Korean….

I’m leaning towards the 4G (with webcam), unless the 8G is less than $75 more.

Jackson October 14, 2007 at 3:11 pm

And let me assume from your comments that you think Asus is one lone Korean man running the whole website? If you are a company and plan on selling your product in another country you should be able to pay a competent enough group to not constantly misspell and half-ass update specs.

PJE October 14, 2007 at 3:47 pm

From the quality of the website – yes! ;0)

Everything related to the release of the EeePC has been handled poorly, especially the fluctuating specifications. But I wouldn’t call them morons.

Jackson October 14, 2007 at 3:53 pm

Yeah, they have handled updating and then successfully communicating the few updates they have made horrendously. But you know you have a good product when you can make a consumer still try and continuously try and fish through all the mistakes and ambiguity week after week. I just have a bad feeling the prices are about to get jacked on Tuesday.

Lee October 14, 2007 at 6:16 pm

My prediction is this…..

Eee PC 2G Surf – $300
Eee PC 4G Surf – $375
Eee PC 4G – $425
Eee PC 8G – $500

Lets face it. Asus has now gotten us to the end game of their ‘bait and switch’ tactic. I will still buy, whatever – but their methods are unethical. First they get you interested with a low $199 price, then they keep moving the release date and the price to increase interest and ‘profits’ and then by the time they announce the true prices they assume there will be less anger about it because we are all waiting so rabidly for it.

Although ‘bait and switch’ tactics like this are not illegal on products that have yet to be released, its still not right. Oh well, what can ya do, except get on line and wait to buy your Eee PC!

rBoLt October 15, 2007 at 12:49 am

my view is “to see is to believe” i had enough waiting.. get this thing out asus. whats your problem? you media freaks!?

Ronald October 15, 2007 at 6:59 am

On the products page now a link to a new flash presentation “Eeexperience”:
http://event.asus.com/eeepc/microsites/en/index.htm

It starts just like the (smaller) old presentation, but it is definitively new. It includes the specs of the four models as presented on the product page. No new info in the presentation.

Loading the 1.1MB file takes time, apparently a slow server.

David October 15, 2007 at 11:50 am

I would prefer a cheaper version of the EEE 700 as I see a 2 GB “HDD” and 256 MB RAM (512 preferred, of course) right enough for mosts purposes.

It’s a simple machine, just to read PDFs, Ebooks, watch videos, play MP3, surf the internet with the WIFI (and Skype) but don’t expect much more.

If I needed CPU power, I wouldn’t spend $500 on this computer because there are much better computers for that price. Perhaps not so small but far more powerful.

Why would you need 8 GB (or 16 GB)? Perhaps someone wants to install huge applications which will run slow as hell or will be very disappointing to use with the 800×640 display and a “big” keyboard.

Or if someone wants that storage capacity to carry data… I still prefer using USB sticks.

To tell you the truth I will use the SD card reader because SD cards are cheap and can be used on many devices.

I dream on using my EEE 700 on a leisure travel to backup photographs and Skype home with the Liberty Statue behind me (for example) :D

Juan Camilo October 15, 2007 at 12:08 pm

They also updated the FAQ adding info on how to do different stuff with the Xandros Linux that comes with the EEE…

Juan Camilo October 15, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Hmmm, I just went to Assus support page, and typed EEE to check for any drivers they have (just to see if they had posted something), and there’s only results for the EEE 4G, I wonder if this means they may not be initially selling the 8G…

Sam October 15, 2007 at 6:58 pm

I think ill get the 4GB one with 512GB of ram and upgrade

I found an 8GB SD card on newegg for sub 50 bux and a 1GB RAM for sub 40

docprego October 16, 2007 at 12:02 am

Asus has posted a new flash demo, it is great!

TERRYAKI October 16, 2007 at 5:17 am

Official pricing is out in Taiwan, the four models are sold on Taiwan currency NT$7999, NT$9900, NT$11100, NT$13800 respectively. There are already end users getting the 4G (with Camera) model.

Nice to see the press release today, but still no prices mentioned.

Ronald October 16, 2007 at 6:51 am

Todays press release is identical to the earlier posted September 19 press release:
http://eeepc.asus.com/en/news09192007.htm

Ronald October 16, 2007 at 7:00 am

And a new product page, for Eee PC 4G only:
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=24&l2=0&l3=0&l4=0&model=1907&modelmenu=1

The page is not yet finished and is intermittently available. No new info on the page.

Ronald October 16, 2007 at 7:08 am

Weird, how they are working on the website while it is accessible. If I work on a site, I build the new version first and publish it when it is ready.

Groklaw Reader October 16, 2007 at 8:07 am

I emailed someone at AllAsus.com and was told that the upgraded version to 8G is not for the US market, or at least they have not been told this…yet? So, was told that the specs on their pre-buy page are correct.
So, the mystery continues?

The $299 model offered by AllAsus.com (Asus Eee PC 700 2GB/Webcam/Case) is not one of the four models on the Asus Eee PC products page.
The $259.99 model could be the 2G Surf, the $399.99 model could be the 4G

deegee October 16, 2007 at 9:16 am

(Rotten) business as usual…

SO!!!! The much anticipated press release where they provide firm prices and release dates is just another bunch of NOTHING. Same tactics. Is anyone else getting tired of this misleading policy? And yet we keep coming back, keep looking, keep waiting. Hooked. Unrequited love. Like waiting for a smile, waiting for a phone call from a woman who is unaware of our affections. Hoping for just a glance. Some reciprocal validation or acknowledgment of our interest and affection. We remain ignored, yet keep coming back. Like a dog waiting at the table for scraps.

BTW, has anyone noticed the the posters here are mostly — if not all — men? ;-(

LayZ October 16, 2007 at 9:21 am

Did you want women to be so geeky? :D
Live with it it’s mostly men stuff.

Well my two rocks in Asus window – first cool laptop low price, extra small, uber quiet. Then – prices jump no information and i bet it will be the same till christmas door and then they’ll throw the prices in the blue sky and everyone will be happy (at least in the Asus office they will think so).

This sucks…

Ben Armstrong October 16, 2007 at 10:05 am

If so, google says:

11 655 Taiwan dollars = 357.750225 U.S. dollars

Christiaan_e October 16, 2007 at 10:06 am

http://asuseeehacks.blogspot.com/

another conformation or just more speculations?

mishpuha October 17, 2007 at 10:54 am

If prices will reach $400 and more I thnk it will be much more efficient to buy VIA NanoBook UMD for $600 but with 1GB of RAM, 30GB hard disk, and Windows XP or Vista.

LayZ October 17, 2007 at 11:27 am

Windows sucks by default.

the prices are 400$ for the “coolest” eee pc (8GB HDD 512MB RAM webcam).

mishpuha October 17, 2007 at 11:44 am

According Allasus.com
price for device with 512MB RAM and 4Gb embedded flash storage (no HDD) will be $399.99

LayZ October 17, 2007 at 11:50 am

Yeees, but look at the newest post in this site.

LayZ October 17, 2007 at 11:50 am

Oh and it is a HDD just a SSD ;)

p_ebox December 3, 2007 at 3:31 am

p_ebox December 3, 2007 at 3:32 am
