According to an article in PC World, the Eee PC is off to a fast start in Taiwan. According to one store employee:
“There were people waiting for them to go on sale, and 98 of them were gone almost immediately”
It seems as though from the article that if you weren’t lucky enough to get one in Taiwan already, you might be out of luck until the next shipment in November.
After seeing this, it should be interesting to see if there’s a quick sellout as well when the Eee PC 4G hits store shelves on November 1st here in the United States. (this is the word from ASUS as of this morning)
And finally, check out unboxing galleries:

Only problem i have with installing another operating system is the fact is now i have to buy an external drive to load it. NO optical included. Or will it boot off a usb drive?? then im happy

ubuntu too heavy for the eeepc? Not even close. Ubuntu runs great on my 256MB ram machine, no slowdowns at all. With 512, even Kubuntu will run without any memory issues.
Ubuntu will run fine with 256 with swap, without it it will probably run, but anyway a standard Ubuntu installation takes about 2G of RAM. If you really want it it’s probable that it could run, but I would go for Xubuntu just because XFCE is a lot lighter than Gnome. Or Zenwalk would probably also be a good idea.
Question:
Too boot (XP) on the EEE PC, from usb drive via a maximum Data Transfer Rate of 3 Mbps ?
It always can be booted via USB
Roses – well then wait a few hours what’s the problem?
Aoeu – the debate was about ubuntu + beryl/compiz
Juan Camilo – no need for swap space on the HDD if you have a RAM of 1G or more.
LayZ: if you’re even thinking about beryl/compiz on this type of machine, I bet you’re not serious about it. That would be an insane waste of battery power.
Tp yeah quite a good point, but when on AC you can allow a bit of an orgy
LayZ: My windows are wobbling as we speak. Even the most graphic intensive plugins run at over 60 fps. The real problem is the graphics card, and, as Tp mentioned, power. For reference, I am still using the 64MB graphics card that came with my desktop. The card that the eeepc has only supports gpl 1.4. I don’t know if that’s a problem. It does have a much higher clock rate than my gpu. Anyway, that is all the information I could find, I hope it’s useful.

shows the price ranging from 299-399 i guess that means no more $249 unit, but atleast i would assume the 399 is the 8gb so im ok with it
thehbcrew: That finally proves the price. People have been posting links to outdated sources and distributors that refuse to update their stats. I can’t believe allasus even takes preorders when they have barely updated their information in months.
Aoeu – enough talking reckon I’ll get it when it’s out on a reasonable dealer and the there will be working (in case it doesn’t work – crapping up) to do
Like I said from day 1, the price would start at $300. But I betcha that $399 is not the 8GB. Nope. The 8GB is going to be over $400 probably $459 to $499.
Weeell somewhere it was written that 8G will be 399$
Lee: They mentioned the price range goes across their models meaning there is no reference to specific releases at all meaning we can assume the price range extends from the 2G to the 8G.
Correct m if I am wrong but I thought the 8gb version was not going to be available at the initial release.Based on that I was thinking that the 299 to 399 range did not include the 8gb. Besides a 100 price range is a pretty slim margin between four different configurations.
There were other sources linked that said the 8g would be coming out during release. Details keep changing.
Oh yes and to add to that; remember that Asus has not given out much information directly on their site. Two things that are sure are the price ranges and the models that exist.
Hey everyone, I don’t know if you noticed, but ASUS changed the info on the product page again. If you go to http://eeepc.asus.com/en/product.htm
now there’s the 8G, 4G, 4g Surf, and the old 2G surf that had dissapeared (if I am not mistaken) is back again… So, asuming that the cheap version that they only sell through bulk orders is the 2G Surf, then the three models that they will sell in the US are the 8G, 4G Surf and 4G, which would make the 100 dollars difference in pricing more reasonable…
Very good point Juan.
Such an outcome would be very profitable for us indeed.
It is still guessing. The four models on the products page have been there since the page was changed a week ago. The price range is for three models. We still cannot be sure whether that range is for the 2GÂ Surf, 4GÂ Surf and 4G, or for the 4GÂ Surf, 4G and 8G.
The $199 model that was only to be sold through bulk orders was originally described as having no WLAN. The 2GÂ Surf has WLAN, unless this is yet another mistake on the Asus site
Who needs an EEE if it has no WLAN?! Linux on laptops is the best thing for free internet – so many hack the wireless access points password applications are available on linux. Ahhh, can’t wait! ]=)
“Who needs an EEE if it has no WLAN?!”
People in countries where there are no WiFi access points with high speed internet connections on every corner, where in many areas there are no such access points at all within hundreds of miles around. For those countries the $199 Eee PC is intended.
Actually I disagree… The EEE will sell in US and some specific countries in Europe. It’s not going to be sold in poor countries in Africa or undeveloped countries in South America (for example I live in Colombia where in some cities there aren’t any WIFI spots, but they’re not going to sell it here). The countries in which it is going to be sold are countries in which people will actually need the WiFi…
Countries where there is no Wifi are not the target group of the EEE… not even the cheap one (Classmate PC and X0 from OLPC would be in that case)
They did not sell out as quickly as suggested.
I was able to buy one in Tainan on oct 21 (third store I tried). They apparently also had one left in stock in their Kaoshiung store.
Besides BB and NewEgg, where can I buy it without tax..I’m in California.
How can i buy online asus eee in taiwan?
can anybody send me this asus eee from taiwan????
