Eee PC Sells Out Early In Taiwan, Unboxing, Nov 1st USA

by ant on October 18, 2007

According to an article in PC World, the Eee PC is off to a fast start in Taiwan. According to one store employee:

“There were people waiting for them to go on sale, and 98 of them were gone almost immediately”

It seems as though from the article that if you weren’t lucky enough to get one in Taiwan already, you might be out of luck until the next shipment in November.

After seeing this, it should be interesting to see if there’s a quick sellout as well when the Eee PC 4G hits store shelves on November 1st here in the United States. (this is the word from ASUS as of this morning)

And finally, check out unboxing galleries:

awesome!!!

Dmitry October 18, 2007 at 2:25 am

299 to 399$ is fun…
I think, it’s better to buy 8G version for 400$(or more for third seller), than pay 300$ and use 2G flash and no camera :)
Taiwan… I want to buy it in Russia with russian or (that worse) single english keyboard. I want to use ICQ and my Sony Ericsson K310i

I’m in Taipei right now. They are indeed sold out and waiting for shipments next week. They’re highlighting the 4G version with flyers and stuff and I found a price for $11650NT (~$350US). One guy I talked to said he expects the 8G model to come out late November. There’s no mention of the other models, which I think few people care for anyways.

Den, greats from Nevinnomysk(Stavropolskiy Region). We will waiting!!!

Asus has 8 inch screen????

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 4:27 am

Well not seen any stuff that tells the triple e has 8″ screen, it was rumored that 801 would have one, but it’s said that the resolution stays the same on an 8″. Only on a 8.8″ or smthng like that it gets to 1024x??? (16:9 some fast mathematician can work it out for us :D )
But what does actually Dojdemsya mean? The other Russian talk was easily understandable (“,)

WiteWulf October 18, 2007 at 4:53 am

Two models available to preorder on the Asus UK site now:

http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk/products.php?cat=53

Curiously, one of them has 768MB of RAM.

I gots my cash in hand. Marking my calendar for November 1st. The smart players are going to go talk to Best Buy salespeople at least a couple days before to ask about availability and quantity. You don’t want to be the 21st guy in line when the store only has a supply of 20. Doh!

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 5:12 am

Didn’t quite understand the sense of your post Lee.

The two preorder thingys – wicked instead of a 8G for 199 there is a pimped 4G with a 768MB Ram..
The ways of Asus are ununderestandable :D

dasha October 18, 2007 at 5:25 am

When I Bought Eee PC in Taipei, I saw a man bought one Eee PC and one NB-use DDR-II 667 Ram, and it can use. The only restriction when I want to add ram is law.
But, it is not so easy to change SSD. Most of us choose SDHC card or Flash memory.
The second patch Eee PC shall come in the end of October, and 2G/4G Surf version shall come in the end of November. Eee PC 8G must be a good Christmas present–if it will not sell out.

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 5:45 am

Law? Against changing RAM? *loud laugh*
And it’s quite long known that the RAM can be exchanged.

SSD though isn’t changeable at all at least if you take in consideration that each triple e version is built especially for that ammount of SSD – the memory’s have to have differences (i.e. voltage ‘n’ stuff).
So I don’t reckon there will be any custom solder jobs in the near future.

Lau October 18, 2007 at 5:48 am

Asus has updated their website, now the 8G model has 8GB SSD

Wasn’t it always so?

“Wasn’t it always so?”
The G8 specifications were already corrected 4 days ago.

So, the only 99 units that have actually been shipped, were sold yesterday in Taiwan. The next shipment is expected November 1st. How does Asus expect to ship 200.000 this year at this pace?

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 8:15 am

Well, the pace can be modified and I reckon Asus has the power to do it.

May October 18, 2007 at 8:54 am

Wait a sec. The 8GB version won’t be on sell in the USA until next year ? Only the 4GB ?

shifuimam October 18, 2007 at 8:55 am

So is the $299 price for the 512MB RAM, 4GB SSD, NO webcam model set, or might it be cheaper?

I’m hoping they release the colors soon – those blue and green ones are hot. :)

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 9:19 am

White one pwnz :D Ipod style :D

Nope, no way they gonna’ make it cheaper.

8G was told to be in this year but with this “steady” information…

dannygee October 18, 2007 at 9:28 am

forgive me, but i did not see in wht news source or asus document it says (1) November 1 release, (2) pricing for the differnt models. Pls help me with a link or links to the sources.

dannygee October 18, 2007 at 9:28 am

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 9:52 am

I think they’ll have the greatest supplies.

blackaddr October 18, 2007 at 10:02 am
Juan Camilo October 18, 2007 at 10:11 am

Try citrusmicro.com , they told me they would accept my card (non-US)

blackaddr October 18, 2007 at 10:47 am

cheers Juan Camilo just ordered one from them. At least they dont want a deposit of $150 or anything. Will wait till 01.11.07 with anticipation.

cclo October 18, 2007 at 11:27 am

Regarding the RAM upgrading,
there is a warranty sticker on the RAM/mini PCIe cover. You will break the sticker (hence the warrenty) if you remove the cover. But with some tricks, it is not difficult to remove the cover without breaking the sticker.

Nightwing October 18, 2007 at 11:46 am

Bestbuy they had to go to those people…. Newegg not bad. But Bestbuy!!!!!

Dmitry October 18, 2007 at 12:03 pm

Den:in moscow??? You’ll buy eee earlier than i(ты его купишь раньше меня)
Dasha: are you russian?
I have one question: what faster- eee or via c7??? :-o

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 1:02 pm

EEE is a PC via C7 is a chipset/processor – you cam’t compare ‘em.

Dmitry October 18, 2007 at 2:51 pm

Ok, what faster and better???: roverbook 419l or eee??? Rover – 500$

CorvetteZ0606 October 18, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Without doing benchmarks, I’m only guessing, but I would say the Intel processor in the EEE will be much faster than a C7 processor. C7 processors are manufactured by VIA and they are typically NOT used in standard computers because of their inferior processing power. Intel is known to make powerful chips. I know that the Intel chip doesn’t compete with Core 2 Duos but I would assume it’s still more powerful than a C7.

LayZ October 18, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Corvette – +1

more new, I will post on my blog

LayZ October 19, 2007 at 3:02 am

800*600 isn’t 16:9 :(

WiteWulf October 19, 2007 at 3:48 am

800×600 is tha maximum resolution that can be output to a monitor from the VGA port. Maximum resolution on the internal LCD is 800×480.

den October 19, 2007 at 4:04 am

Dmitriy Москов москов!!! Да я не думаю что так быстро у нас появится. если тока из китая )))

dasha October 19, 2007 at 5:14 am

The output from VGA port is more than 800 * 600. A 15inch LCD can be 1024 * 768, BenQ 32inch moniter can be more than 2000!
I suggest the 8G Eee PC shall use Windows Vista Starter or Home, not XP.

Ronald October 19, 2007 at 5:27 am

New news releases by Asus, the last one confirmimg the release of an Eee PC with Windows later this year. See links on the Eee PC page:

“800×600 is tha maximum resolution that can be output to a monitor from the VGA port. Maximum resolution on the internal LCD is 800×480.”

In Xandros or WinXP?

LayZ October 19, 2007 at 7:11 am

Come on people! Almost every program has its analogue on Linux so no need to install that crap windows with all it’s bug’s and viruses, not to forget inexplainable errors.

sup October 19, 2007 at 8:38 am

I know, but if it depends on kernel, You will need reinstall Linux at least. Low resolution of external VGA is serious issue for most of users who wnt to use EEE at home also.

sup October 19, 2007 at 8:39 am

dasha: I think Vista would be very slow on this machine…

May October 19, 2007 at 8:56 am
LayZ October 19, 2007 at 10:10 am

Vista is the worst crap ever.
Only those who’d install Xp on the triple E I’d understand.
Oh and about the linux – i reckon i’d install Ubuntu rather than leave the stock option. Beryl/Compiz on this baby would be a pretty interesting thing if possible :D

Juan Camilo October 19, 2007 at 11:02 am

LayZ: I use Ubuntu myself, but I do feel that it would be too heavy for the EEE… Also, it’s important to keep in mind what the EEE is for, my guess is that for just surfing the net, writing documents and making skype calls, de default Xandros will work fine…Although I know I’m probably going to end up installing another linux distro just because I can’t keep using the same distro for more than 6 months ;-)
