For Those Interested in KDE With The Default Xandros…

October 29th, 2007 by ant

We were able to get KDE mostly working on the forum tonight (it was all thanks to oinker) without a lot of changes on the default Eee PC Xandros Linux install:

KDE

This should help those concerned about potentially only having the “Easy Mode” AsusLauncher interface as reviewed in the post previous to this. Of course, be careful trying this if you already have an Eee PC- this is more of a “it can happen” post than a “you should do it” post.

[Edit, 5:27am] After getting KDE going, you’ll also notice a new icon in the shutdown dialog box of your Eee PC: Full Desktop. Unfortunately, it still leads back to the Easy Mode for now- but there could be an easy configuration fix.

[Edit, 5:07pm] If you apt-get install ksmserver, the “full desktop” choice on the AsusLauncher easy mode shutdown dialog will take you straight to an Eee PC branded KDE interface without having to get into all the killalls with the linux console. If you choose Easy Mode from KDE, it will bring you back to AsusLauncher. Unfortunately, going into KDE and then shutting down does not keep KDE as the default window manager. It will still boot back to AsusLauncher easy mode. We’re not far away from a fully unlocked Advanced mode…

What we need is a different distro running on this Eee PC…

    Hmmmm, how about:

    Eee-ubuntu Hmmm, Anyone?

The bios needs to be working properly (are they using this bios (see this
    Wikipedia quote):
“The Open Source community increased their effort to develop a replacement for proprietary BIOSes and their future incarnations with an open sourced counterpart through the LinuxBIOS and OpenBIOS/Open Firmware projects. AMD provided product specifications for some chipsets, and Google is sponsoring the project. Motherboard manufacturer Tyan offers LinuxBIOS next to the standard BIOS with their Opteron line of motherboards”.

If they used a “free bios” then that would be a good thing too… then, feature adding might be easier to do?

Also I see that this Eee PC does not have a photo editor = No Gimp?
and if not Gimp, then No Krita?

And I did not see Gwenview listed either? What about Gwenview? Gwenview is wonderful, with the Kipi Plugins, using the Kipi plugin for auto send of photos by email, where the Kipi Plugin takes a bunch of 1.5M files (or just one) and make it about 80K, or less, (an auto resize) that is a photo size that is very good for email size, and then it takes those photos and can dump right into Thunderbird email (and opens the email client for you automatic as well, you just have to say “Hey” address the email, and send, very cool. Can we do this on the Eee PC?

Also - Can You “fix Thunderbird” do do this:
    http://www.linux.com/articles/53463?tid=130
” Turn Thunderbird into a collaboration tool

By default, Thunderbird doesn’t have a calendar, and it lacks the ability to synchronise data between multiple clients. However, the Calendar plugin combined with the SyncKolab extension can fill the void. You also need an IMAP account, which SyncKolab uses to synchronise the contacts and calendar data. You can either use a local Kolab server or an IMAP email account; the latter option is probably easier. ”

How easy is this “Linux” install to customize?

So with regard to blowing the system away and installing a custom distro, does the system come with any sort of recovery disk? Or are you hosed if you break the base install? Seems to me that if it includes a recovery disk(which it really should), that the very next thing to do after taking screen shots of the base system and doing that awesome review, is to blow it away and try a custom install. I would think that Ubuntu would be a good choice if you could pare it down to the bare minumum.

Really though, from the looks of the system after your review, if the console is powerful enough, running most apps in their tabbed mode should be fine.

  3. William Ruckman Says:

I don’t think I would use the KDE instructions unless it was a permanent switch to KDE and didn’t revert back to the custom Asus interface after reboot. It is a pretty dirty fix. But once I get my eeePC i’ll figure it out.

Someone should try to install a 2GB DDR2 ram and see if it works.

Could you please try running the GIMP on the EEE. I would like to use it on there when I get one, but I am concerned about screen resolution.

Does anyone happen to know the EEE’s distribution model? Will I be able to walk into a big box store and grab one, or is it on order only?

  10. Finite Says:

It appears that ASUS made their own versions of a handful of the 400+ packages that make up the default system. See my comment here for details. I hope none of that stuff is really needed, because I don’t want to run EEE-Ubuntu — I want to run Ubuntu! And, every other modern distro, of course.

So, I really hope everything in it will be functional without any of their special software, and I hope it can boot from an SDHC card too!

Reminder for those putting other Distros on this platform:

Remember, you can’t use a “normal” install of UBUNTU default File System in these Flash Based devices. The Flash needs some “wear leveling” to allow it to work for a acceptable period of time (of course the Flash in the next version needs to be Tech replaceable as the wear out of Flash or MTBF issues when out of warrantee, needs the Flash to not be on the main board, but instead is something that can be plugged in, easy service and upgradeability is NEEDED!

For info on Wear Leveling File system for Linux Read:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JFFS

And you will need to eliminate the SWAP as well.

Read ALL of this and get an article about this out (the truth is)?…:

Enzo - The Unit is not in US stores yet. There are places where you can pre-order.

Great. Windows XP will double Eee price.

  17. HP Says:

The increase to $1000 will mean upgrade to the hardware, starting with the screen. 800×480 can’t cut it with XP due to UI issues (read: truncated dialog boxes), so it’ll most likely be a 10″ with 1028×600

  18. HP Says:

..oops clicked Submit by accident.. I mean a 10″ plus probably a 8G/1G config, as well as beefier CPU & battery (more than the 630MHz Celeron, for sure). The question is, how will it fare against the conventional ultraportables at that price point?

The E3’s buzz was that it’s a low-priced ultraportable. Take away the low-cost angle, and it’s another low-quality white-box laptop.
