Finally ready to hold an Eee PC 4G? The final price comes in at $399 for the 512MB RAM/4G Hard Drive/Webcam model. Directron customers have already reported receiving the Eee PC, according to this post on the forums. Newegg also has it for sale, as of today. For more retailers in North America, check out the ASUS where to buy list.

$400 = BAD!
i just called bestbuy… had the guy search around a bit for it.. conclusion: “its not in our system yet”
I can buy a powerfull 15″ laptop for 499$. The EeePC at 400$, it is really bad!!!!!!! What about the 250$?
Looks like Newegg and Directon are on the ball. It would be nice to see Allasus do the same with their pre-orders.
$400! Sometime in the not so distant past I heard that the Eee was supposed to retail for around $200. What gives Asus?
Hopefully the prices on these will come down soon. I really like the idea of the Eee to use as a secondary laptop.
grrrr… Obviously cost of parts went up, and this is not their cheapest model… will the price of the cheapest model hit $200? will it ever come out? I was holding out for a cheap laptop; at $400 I’ll just get something else.
The availability at Newegg is a real shocker to me, especially a day or so earlier than expected. However I am still predicting Best Buy won’t have it for quite a few days to come. Now the only decision is, take the plunge and order one from Newegg right now, or wait till its in stores?
For those of you holding out for a $200 model in North America, a quote from the Asus Website (under Availability): “Eee PC is scheduled to be available in North America within a few weeks. The Eee PC comes in three different models starting from $299 to $399.” I might have tipped at $250, but $300…
What about UK, dammit!
to DSP: $199 was only ever for the extreme basic EEE….the $400 (while still kinda expensive) has better specs/features and therfore *will* cost more
….so now we are left to decide whether or not the webcam and extra hour or so of battery life are worth [whatever the price difference they come up with]….on the other hand…just think what the 8gig version is gonna cost :-/ like $450 or so
15″ for $500 is only half the point btw, the ultramobility of this thing is the other half
$400 and it’s not even the top of the line model. Not happy and not ordering.
it going super fast. 1 min ago they had 24, now 21
Yeah thanks …. I was buying an EEE from Directron, and thanks to this ad, they have none now =(
Somebody should tell Newegg…
I got the following yesterday, re the eee

Its really unfortunate that Asus got our attention with a $200 laptop before they had any idea how much it was going to cost.
The only reason I was interested is that $200 is almost a no brainer for a laptop, but $400 is a different story. The cheapest model isnt so great either because with a short battery life, you can’t really take it very far.
I’m with #10. Not happy and not ordering. :,(
I am disgusted at all the bitching about the price.
Do a little research and have a look at the size and portability of the Eeepc, the only thing I have seen this small is the $2000 Libretto u100, and that has the same specs!
It has been mentioned dozens (if not hundreds) of times that the $260 model will follow some time later, and the $200 model will not be available until next year.
This is the high-middle model, it shouldn’t cost any less (Add up the price of the webcam, extended life battery, and extra RAM/SSD and tell me that it isn’t worth the extra $140)
Also, the $200 model (Eeepc 700, not 701) looked to be NON-UPGRADEABLE, meaning onboard RAM, not a so-dimm slot.
I don’t mind that at all, and since you only have to pay ~$60 more to get the 701 I am fine. I am a little disappointed that the webcam model is the first out the door, I could care less about the webcam.
Sorry, I just have to say again:
THIS IS A 7″ LAPTOP, NOT A 15″ LAPTOP (or 12″, 13″ 14″ 14.1″ etc.)
YOU NORMALLY PAY AN EXTRA $1500 FOR THIS SIZE.
QUIT BITCHING, OR SHOW ME WHERE TO BUY A TOSHIBA LIBRETTO U100 for $400
$300 for the base model is a little more than I thought it would be, but still not terrible considering.
Doesn’t this thing have a mini-pciE slot? I know I am going to try hooking up a Geforce to it
, I already have my 6200 modified to a x1 card (Yay Dremel), and before you ask, yes it works fine.
abc123: you mean #11
So far it’s still the best 12″/sub 12″ laptop out there that’s selling for a decent price…I spent a month looking at different 12″ laptops (on and off) and the “cheap” ones were made crappy too…
As far as specs to price, this thing is really nice so far…definitely hoping for a price drop though…
I am pleased with the price and I’m very pleased I just caught it on new egg. It was listed as sold out, but then I refreshed and saw that add to cart was there and jumped at the chance. They must have gotten another shipment or something.
For the UK try http://www.clove.co.uk or http://www.rm.com
I thuoght that it was going to be cheaper- that the 2g was going to be sold elsewhere for 200, the 4g surf for 250 and the 4g for 300. I would have still jumped on it if it was 350, but 400 is a stretch
And its not because it’s a bad deal, it’s just that it’s not worth it for me. Hopefully the price will go down soon.
Well its official. I just placed my order with Newegg.com. The total came out to $446.02 including tax and shipping. Damn! This better be worth it!
I could not wait any more ESPECIALLY after my fact-finding trips to two Best Buys today.
I have CONFIRMED that the EeePC will NOT be for sale at Best Buy (in the store) anytime soon. This is what I found out. I went to the first best buy & no one knew anything even the store manager. I went to the second best buy and the manager had heard of it but said that anything that goes into stock must get an RSS number two weeks to a month before it sells.
So if what the manager and the Ace Salesperson who searched the RSS system and gave me this info is correct, the EeePC won’t be for sale in Best Buy for another two to three weeks AT LEAST!
The very helpful sales-dude said that it is possible the Asus may be available as an “online only” buy. So all you people out there, if you haven’t bought from Newegg you better hope it goes on sale on Best Buys website. Good luck y’all!!!!
I ordered mine from Newegg at 6:30 am. It was more than I really wanted to pay, but I think it is worth it.
I’m sick of hearing people whine about the price too.
Generally speaking, the more you miniaturize something, the MORE it costs; laptops cost more than a desktop PC of similar spec; ultraportable PCs (generally) cost more than full size laptops.
Go look at the prices for PDAs – you can easily spend more than $400 for a PDA with a slower processor, less RAM (even leaving the SSD aside) and a tiny screen.
Sure, I’d have loved to get one at $200 too – but $400 is not unreasonable for what this offers.
As an aside – if anyone has access to what Microsoft calls “Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs” – basically a version of XP designed for lower-spec machines – I’d love to know if it installs on an Eee. It seems to me it would be a great choice, given that it is less ram and drive-hungry and runs better on lower-power processors.
The only problem, of course, is that MS doesn’t sell it at retail; perhaps Asus could convince them to let them sell it OEM?
Ordered from newegg this morning immediately after seeing this story. Count me in with the people saying “show me where else to get a honest-to-god subnotebook with wifi for $400″
I’m not hugely happy about the price. I would have rather seen $300-$350 retail. But it’s the cheapest thing out there that is: small, portable, SSD/flash, wireless, decent battery life and Linux. The only other option I see is to go for the OLPC, which has better battery life but is a far less powerful machine. (takes forever to boot!)
@ GeorgeM
I tried XP for Legacy PC’s, and it sucked.
Full XP or NTlite is sure to be better.
Personally I think Windows 2000 with SP4 is the best choice, I have it on my 450mhz PC and laptop and it does a stellar job, you can hardly tell it from XP, it is the same core after all.
nobody is saying that the eee pc is not worth its $400 price tag. It is arguably the best buy for someone looking for an ultraportable laptop. however, some people, including myself, were following the story because we wanted a $200 companion laptop. I really don’t care about the camera, the extended battery, or if it’s 4g, 8g, or even 2g (especially with 8g SDs selling for $70 on eBay). I am going to hold out for the low-end model, hoping to get it for under $300.
With regards to those “whining” about the price we shouldn’t be so hard on them. Some simply haven’t priced PDA’s and under 10″ laptops. The Fujitsu 1510D pumps out for $1,700!!!
The rest of them who are complaining about the price, well lets just put it this way. They have the right to be mad. Asus should not have set an unbelievably low price point if they couldn’t live up to it. It is better to set a more believable price of $300 than to fall short of promises you made to your potential customers.
That is the real bottom line. I knew going into this whole thing that $199 was an AWESOME DEAL. And I also expected the price to go up, and it did. I too was disappointed, but I am trying to be realistic.
The moral to the story is, don’t make promises you can’t keep. Asus, ya hear me?
Hmmm… it’s us$400 in central computer which is the silicon valley computer store. The price in Taiwan should be us$299 without tax according to the currency. It’s more expensive in U.S.A if it’s really 399.
I was expecting a price around $349 tops and was going to buy two for my wife and I, but with a total of $446.02 including tax and shipping multiplied by two… Sorry Asus, but I’ll just carry a little more weight, use a fully loaded laptop with a nice 12″~14″ screen instead. At least I can read these postings without hurting my eyes. Big Disappointment!!
Sure, $199 would have been incredible, but was it ever *really* serious? I always took it with a pinch of salt. Have sold my VAIO TR3-A a couple weeks ago in anticipation of an Eee, and will probably break even once it’s purchased, but that’s just fine; it’s smaller, lighter, and will make a perfect travel companion for my six-month backpacking holiday planned for next year.
I plan on using this ASAP, from Office Depot, when they get them in. I’m using it for business purposes, so, I’m using my reseller ID when I buy it and pay only 6% CA “use tax” in late Jan ’08

blingwiz.;)
A LinuxWorld article said that it would be available in brick-and-mortar stores in major cities, including San Francisco. Does anyone know if this is true, and which stores they are?
At $200, it was an attractive value. For $400+, it’s not. For the same amount of money I can get the Nokia N810 which has the same resolution screen and is smaller and more portable plus bluetooth.
This site has it out on the 12th in the UK, or now if you order from RM.

I ordered it from New Egg. Caveat: they have a NO RETURN policy for laptops. I bought it for a friend who came in from overseas and I will be helping to set it up. I’ll get a great idea of its pluses and minus and might get one myself after this. About the price: YES I feel screwed by what appeared to be a $200 to $400 price jump – double. Because the Summer announcement by the CEO said $199. Not other higher priced models. It’s BS. But I also agree with others who posted that if it IS a quality product then its a great deal in the UMPC category — the other tiny laptops cost more than double. More features and power, sure. But still in the $1000 range. Not fancy – not enough power to run Windows (no matter what they say), no touch screen and short on muscle BUT it still does create a new class of PC — super small and light, and really is a PC, not a toy, not a phone. And a real keyboard, not a thumb sriven micro keyboard that’s only good for text messaging.
I’ve said all i have to say. I say MORE when I’ve unboxed and analyzed it.
As I’ve posted a few days ago, if you go re-read the ASUS announcement it only mentions the basic specs of 2GB SSD & WiFi in the “around $199″ announcement. Thus, it was never a hard set spec or price. People who expected the world for $199 just couldn’t read. They only have themselves to blame, and that’s why they’re so sore about it. It must “feel better” to blame ASUS than themselves for believing in the hype they never bothered to investigate.
danny g:
Not enough power to run windows? Right.
I had and old P2 400 with 64 MB of ram and the only problem I had with XP was some loading for applications. You’re greatly underestimating the power of this little thing.
The price is another issue that I can;t figure out why people are complaining about. I still think that at $400, the price is fair. $200 was just a steal and there was no real profit for them at that price. People seem to forget just what this thing is; an ultra portable laptop for a very low price compared to what other companies were trying to shove in our faces. This has already driven out some of this competition. Isn’t that enough proof?
I have to agree with JDP on this one…and disagree with the “give the whiner’s a break” person…
You can’t look at the initial $200 price tag and compare it to this computer…at all..ever…it’s a different computer…when they said $200 it was for a low end thing, asus told you that, eeeuser told you that.
So for you to look at $399 and say that Asus lied to you is about as stupid as it gets. The $200 version was just the start of a good thing. Asus could easily have dumped this thing out for $500-600 and never told anyone about it before hand and none of you would have been the wiser that it was “supposed” to cost $199
Basically if the $400 doesn’t work for your needs, STFU and wait for the other versions to come up…
Microcenter has it for $399.99 as well: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0275847
@Miles: I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on WinFLP – it definitely needs less drive space, and seems both lighter on RAM needs and a bit faster than full XP. (I did a comparison in identical VMware machines on the same host box.)
W2k-SP4 would be an interesting choice – I just wonder if the supplied “XP” drivers will work.
Oh man! I have a MicroCenter around the corner from my house. I ordered from newegg so I could have saved $16 on shipping. I was in MicroCenter yesterday. I took a brief look around but did not search their website. I can’t believe MicroCenter is going to stock them. All this time I have been asking and asking Best Buy and these computers turn up right under my nose. Perhaps availability will not be as bad we thought? They are available at far more retailers than I thought, and so far almost everyone I know has been able to order one, so we shall see.
Ah, you might be right about XP vs legacy xp, I just tried it once and was not at all impressed, perhaps I used the wrong PC to test.
I do realize I was “shouting” and calling people whiners, I have a knee-jerk reaction to people who could have read 4+ months ago that a ~$350-400 model would be first out the gate. And then they cry boo-hoo, I give up, bla bla bla, why is it so expensive, why isn’t it $200, etc.
The $200 (Or $259) model isn’t coming for some time, there has been a general release strategy and price known for some time.
Honestly, how do you go through life believing everything at face value (no matter how outrageous the claim IE, $200 laptop), without calmly researching the pertinent facts.
Namely, that the $200 model has, is, and likely will be only for large bulk orders, and mostly for developing countries.
I don’t want it anyway for my main portable, it will come with Soldered-in RAM that is not upgradeable, for $60-100 more I can get one that is upgradeable.
I too lament the late/possibly never arrival of a $200 model, but I will live because this is the real world. As someone who has built and searched for small PC’s, it is still a steal.
And as someone who has owned 2 Toshiba Librettos (110CT and 50CT), and drooled over the 1Ghz U100 for $2000, let me tell you that this is an excellent price point for the NEXT TO MOST EXPENSIVE MODEL, if it stays around $300 for the cheapest retail 701 unit (NOT the bulk 700 model), then I will for sure be getting one.
For anyone who has used an x86 based laptop this small (or slightly smaller), you understand what is being offered here, and a ‘used 12-15″‘ laptop should never be mentioned, it is not the same thing. The EEEpc is slightly larger than 2 DVD boxes, and that is much smaller than a regular laptop.
Does anyone know when the colored version will start showing up? The black version looked kinda cool.
Whew! I feel a little better. I just checked and my local MicroCenter never had any in stock so I am still ok with my newegg order.
With regards to the colored versions I am assuming they aren’t going to be available for a while. No word yet but at least a month if not more. Maybe the pink and green ones will come out by Xmas so I can pick one up for my daughter and son.
With regards to other operating systems, I am looking forward to putting Windows 2000 on this unit. I can set the unit to boot from the SSD and have Win2K on a 4GB drive so it never messes with my Linux if I want to boot from that. Can’t wait y’all!
I hate when people call other people whiners when they’re just stating their opinion.
I think i mentioned in another thread that Dell has a budget line of laptops called the Vostro. Their cheapest model far surpasses the EEE in everything but size (which could be a good thing) and is only $500.
So if you’re not going to get a laptop at the no-brainer price of $200, why bother paying $400 when $500 will get you a much better equipped system?
Is the fact that its the width of a nestle crunch bar worth $400? becuse you’re not getting much hardware for it…
In all, i’m still a believer. I’ll wait for a price drop though, and probably get the cheapest.
