o2smartphone on our forums has come up with a nifty way of adding a “start menu” to the easy mode of the Eee PC:
This is a great addition to easy mode, and perfect for those who are waiting for a more permanent advanced mode fix. For the complete details of how to replicate this, check out this thread on the forum, and specifically this post for the exact instructions.

Is the start menu any different from the start menu in advanced mode apart from it’s appearance?
Well, I know we can all go to the thread and all, but it would be better if it was explained in a step by step process and posted as a tutorial in the Wiki…

Well as it is a Wiki you can edit it. So go ahead
The difference is that advanced mode uses KDE and this is just a feature of icewm. The great part about this is, it uses a lot less memory than KDE, but it’s still powerful enough to get the job done.
I would edit it myself, if I could actually fully understand the process that was posted regarding this; however, I don’t, that’s why I’m suggesting the author (or someone who understands the process) to write it down in the wiki…
Newegg has the product up in preparation for sale. (not yet)

Its only the white one and its $400. The white personally makes me a bit frightened. Unless they mix the plastics exactly right you can end up with a yellow plastic in under 2 years. Heat makes the problem worse. I’ve got an Averatec that did exactly that (and seen a number more) and they weren’t even rushing the manufacture. The laptop looks dingy and is a bit embarrassing to show in public.
The price officially puts me in the “definitely not interested” camp. Makes me sad.
Don’t even compare Avertec to Asus. That’s like Honda to a Ferrari.
You mean, speedy, efficient, reliable and safe versus, pretty, overpriced, minimal comforts, outrageously expensive to maintain and repair, and hazardous to the untrained? I think you’re comparison is off. Try Mini vs Saturn. That would be a bit more appropriate. (Yes Asus would be the Saturn).
Asus screwed this one up unless they plan on dropping the price from $400 to about $325 within a few months. The Palm Foleo would have been better at $600. (Unfortunately the promise of a $200 eee killed it.)
> Unfortunately the promise of a $200 eee killed it.
You don’t know that.
Plus the Foleo required you also owning a Palm hand-held. It was designed as a keyboard and monitor for people’s palm pilots… not as a standalone computer. It was useless by itself.
if you think that’s better, then so be it. I don’t.
The Price – agreed is creeping too high.
Wikipedia on the Eee PC had the price of the Eee PC 4G Surf at about $301, but guess what, I just saw it listed at $349.99 at AllAsus.com (really the price is getting too high). For the Eee PC 4G Surf, I can see a price of $299.99 as fair. And yes, white does have it’s problems with looking good over time. I have seen that too. I would like one to be a silver color, or black is ok, but white for me, is a bit, well, not what I like for a color either.
Asus builds macbooks for Apple. I think they probably have white plastic figured out.
Just ordered my Eee 4G. Had some birthday money sitting around, so I got to pretend it cost $250 instead of $400 =)
I dont think this processors going to be getting as hot as some of the others causing yellowing of the white laptop. its a 900mhz celeron designed for minimal heat, i think we will be fine
Heh, the yellowing problem is industry wide with all light colored plastics. (Unless of course they come un with some innovation in the past year that i’m un aware of). I’ve seen yellow macobooks too, as well as IBM products where the beige turned brown, etc…
This is worth to check http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,1000000567,10006278o-2000331777b,00.htm
If you want to get a sub-300 you’ll have to wait another month or two.
This is the 400 dollar mid-range model, not the low-end ‘surf’ model with 256 megs of ram or the top-end one with 8gigs of disk space.
Me, mine is few days from my house travelling on a UPS truck somewhere.
Anyone know if the wifi card in the eee pc supports packet injection?
My white eee is actually an off white pearl finish not like the Macbook. Gonna keep mine out of the sun in it’s little black bag and then perhaps it won’t go yellow, as it’s the best toy I have ever owned.
Asus appear to have made a decision that no-one will be upgrading their ram or flash memory as there is a seal over the screw on back cover. I would have thought that these were “user upgradeable” parts, but the seal says “warranty void if seal broken or removed” anyone know if there are similar seals on other Asus laptops?
I have my Eee on order from newegg and it should reach me by Monday or Tuesday. If I had waited I could have bought my Eee today from Microcenter. If anyone lives near Tustin, CA they have three Eee PC’s left as of Saturday, Nov 3rd at 1245pm. The guy at the store told me that they sold one last night and three remain, so if you want one badly you can get it today if you are local.
