I run Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro and would be thrilled to run it on the EeePC as well, so I’m looking forward to seeing some clear instructions on how to install it.

LayZ November 6, 2007 at 5:39 pm

Ubuntu + beryl = pure powaaa :D

That’s exactly what I will try to do

ConstyXIV November 6, 2007 at 6:07 pm

Speaking of Ubuntu, how well does it run on the Eee vs the Eee’s Xandros? Is the speed similar, and does all the hardware work? Also, how much more/less space does Ubuntu take up?

from indonesia November 6, 2007 at 6:25 pm

xp on eee701? oh my god… it’s cool…using xp home, profesional, or embeding? using external harddisk?

Ant November 6, 2007 at 6:34 pm

Ubuntu runs just as fast as Xandros- the current problem is that wireless networking doesn’t work right after the install.

XP home on the SSD- installed via an external usb dvd drive. runs perfectly with all devices working.

Pictures are nice but not informative, seems like a proof of concept than a guide

Brian November 6, 2007 at 7:37 pm

Wow! Please tell me how you got Ubuntu on the Eee. It looks beautiful. Gutsy Gibbon is a great release and I would much rather use it instead of Xandros. Gutsy is what converted me from Windows.

lixy November 6, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Yay for Ubuntu!

jeff November 6, 2007 at 9:07 pm

i got the eee today, have a bright dot sucks, went to use internet radio option but need a plugin any idea which one?

taras November 6, 2007 at 10:28 pm

does that battery thing mean anything? was it a bug? also does compiz run?

Andreas November 7, 2007 at 3:58 am

Is the startup as quick with Ubuntu or XP as it is with the Xandros OS?

RobF November 7, 2007 at 7:57 am

Silly question given the achievement, but does that XP install recognise the webcam and allow you to use it with MSN. That would be cool.

may November 7, 2007 at 8:02 am

any news when the 8GB version will be available ?

thanks

Groklaw Reader November 7, 2007 at 8:51 am

may – According to and email from Jerry at AllAsus.com , there is no news on the 8GB model at all from Asus, AND the 2GB model will be out in Jan 08, AND the 4GB Surf model (no camera) will be out in Dec 07.

For others putting Ubuntu on this system, pay attention to the need for a Wear Leveling Flash File system (google wikipedia about Linux and Flash File Systems).

To all that own one, does the touchpad have scrolling features….like moving your finger down the right side and it scrolls the window (or even like macs where 2 fingers anywhere will scroll)

Thanks

I’ll be looking forward to seeing a guide, as I’m typing this comment on my new Eee! (Does anyone else have trouble typing an apostrophe but I end up hitting Enter!! This keyboard will take some getting used to)

thehbcrew November 7, 2007 at 2:21 pm

Atleast on my EEE I assume its the same everywhere else. But when my battery gets low, the mouse stops functioning properly. It might as well shut the unit down if you cant use the mouse. Dont want to put windows on it, but think i might be. Im waiting to see if i can rma mine seeing as i got a bright dot on my screen. However all of asus’s LCD’s have a ZBD warranty except for you guess it the EEEpc

jayjay November 7, 2007 at 4:09 pm

lovin the eee pc placing my order next week, i’m already using ubuntu so would make sense to install that. Anybody got any news on an ubuntu install – start up time, size on hd, driver problems etc

can you install wine on xandros os?

Lee November 7, 2007 at 4:24 pm

Just got the Eee today. Charging it up and haven’t turned it on yet. It is heavier than I thought, larger than I thought and the keyboard is smaller than I thought it would be, but very easy to type on. All in all I like the form factor. It’s way cool. My samsung i760 smartphone arrived yesterday so I am in geek heaven right now. I just hope I don’t have any bright dots on my screen like thehbcrew does…..

The “restore DVD”? But the eee has no optical drive.

You must have used an external DVD hookup. Which brand did you use? Did you have any problems with it? What program did you use to install it? This seems to be the very first thing to explain.

steve November 8, 2007 at 3:41 am

One thing people should be aware of, as Groklaw has been pointing out, is the wear on the SSD internal drive as a result of installing a ‘full’ OS. Lots of write cycles means shorter drive life. It would be a great idea to simply format the hard drive (if you need the extra space) and boot a smallish distro from the SD card reader (with say, a 4 or 8gb SD card in it). The files you’re saving that are relatively important store on the clean internal SSD, as you won’t access them the whole time you’re using the computer. Lots easier to replace an SD card than the SSD I’d imagine!

LayZ November 8, 2007 at 5:24 am

The SD card will (I reckon it will) have a bit plucking out of the SD port – it won’t look very easthetically…
And true wizards at breaking stuff [that you can't possibly brake] could even brake it in two pieces accidentally :)

bg124c41 November 8, 2007 at 8:55 am

The SD slot on mine holds the card perfectly flush. If I were without fingernails, I would have some difficulty removing the card.

slktek1 November 8, 2007 at 10:34 am

Just got my eee pc and was wondering how hard it is to convert to XP. Any problems? I want to be able to load drivers for my broadband card.

How much of the 4GB hard drive will the Gutsy Gibbon install use?

dave November 8, 2007 at 10:59 am

dont install a plain vanilla.. i suggest base server install, and then pypanel and openbox. much lighter.. and just install what you need.

Anonymous November 8, 2007 at 11:07 am

Thanks, Dave, but how much space does a base install use?

fadumpt November 8, 2007 at 4:13 pm

how about scrolling through websites, etc with the touchpad? is it possible? :)

dave November 8, 2007 at 5:10 pm

about the size of install…

My laptop (not my main machine), is a p3, 1999 Thinkpad 600x.. old machine. i’m at about 650MB of disk space used not counting swap.

I did this with a “command line” install of ubuntu 7.10 server.

I’ve added:

admd – lets me standby laptop when I close lid

python – a full dev environment, including a lot of libraries that I may never need.

synaptic – might take this off, but for now its nice

firefox – with flashnonfree plugin

pidgin – AIM/jabber client

vim – full install of viM

openbox – the window manager

pypanel – a very simple taskbar

rox – icons

I plan to have about the same thing running on my eee when I get one. I might even release a distro… or at least make a copy for myself.

Thanks, Dave!

Can someone answer this?

JDP November 9, 2007 at 9:51 pm

About any basic USB optical drive should work fine — brand matters little. USB boot isn’t a big deal anymore for most systems.

captcrisis November 10, 2007 at 6:07 pm

Thanks.

j@jdbowman.com November 14, 2007 at 9:03 am

I’ve been using Ubuntu for years & it is great.
I’ve also tried Xubuntu which is a lot smaller & faster than Ubuntu.
It might be perfect for the EeePC.

I have installed Ubuntu, but cannot configure the Ndiswrapper to work with the drivers on the cd? Has anyone else gotten the wireless or lan working?

Couldn’t you just boot from a thumbdrive and not have to install on the internal memory? I don’t know if the bios supports that.
