wow I’ve been pronouncing Eee that way, but after all these years it turns out I’ve been pronouncing Asus incorrectly.
The Citrus Micro web site now indicates that for the remaining models, prices have increased AGAIN, features have been stripped AGAIN, and release dates have been pushed back AGAIN. If this is true, I’ve had it. For six months, Asus has managed to keep me from buying a competing product by dangling a bullshit carrot, withholding details, and releasing faulty information on the rare occasions on which they do actually seem to be moving forward. The $200 laptop was supposed to be released in August. It will now cost upwards of $350 to get one before mid-December. The cheapest model initially promised double the specs at 2/3 the price; if I’m doing the math properly, that screwup is 150% off the mark. Who are you kidding, Asus?
I’m not sure why you say they changed AGAIN… the prices I see in your link are the same we’ve known for some time now…
It looks like Citrus Micro won’t be selling the 2G until the end of December (…and selling them in iMac colors…)
I’ll wait impatiently for the 8G.
Juan — scroll down. They changed the information in the table but not the header.
Oh, I thought you meant you to pronounce “EEE”. I’m not sure about that, but if you add a USB mouse, I assume it would be “eek” “eek “eek”.
Huh? That was supposed to be a joke?
Well I pronounced ASUS correctly. :]
Eh. I’m a maverick. I’ll continue to call it the Triple-E. Sue me, ah-soos!
fed up: this never was the laptop for you…you jumped on the wagon simply because it was supposed to be a cheap as dirt computer…you seem to not care about the fact that it’s Ultra Portable for a non ultra portable price. You’ll be happier with a used laptop on ebay or something.
Asus didn’t actually do anything wrong for the most part….they simply released information and we made our own assumptions…and as the time passed, things changed, as is the norm. Asus could never have sold a computer for $200 anyway. To be able to get a UMPC out for under $1000 is amazing in itself. Asus didn’t keep you from buy competing products, that was up to you entirely, you simply lost yourself in the dream of a $200 laptop.
Now that nothing is blinding you from the competition, you can go out with a more informed outlook and get one of those. They’ll probably match what you want more then a UMPC anyway.
I gotta agree with fadumpt on this one to a point. I was disappointed to pay well above what I thought but… There have always been other more expensive choices or used ebay choices out there. If the Asus didn’t come along I would have already bought a used Fujitsu P1120 already but I am VERY HAPPY I waited. This unit rocks! It does everything I want it to do. The size is exactly what I wanted. It is in short fulfilling my every expectation.
And by the way I don’t care if I am pronouncing it wrong. When people ask what it is I proudly say with the most American California accent “Asus Triple E dude!”.
I also agree with fadumpt. Sure, I would have loved to only pay $200 but to be able to carry the EEE PC around and use it whenever I want is well worth it! In fact, every woman I’ve shown it to has loved the look of it and none have squawked about the price.
Lee: exactly, the only options I had before this were used systems on ebay
the Fujitsu, and tiny Dell and Gateway systems and the like were like your only choice. The no optical drive systems that were light enough to be portable without breaking your bank account open.
Please tell ASUS about this… two features needed in software:
Gwenview (KDE friendly) is needed with Kipi Plugins for Gwenview too, to be able to EASILY send larger camera photos (SD card slot) and send the photo attached to emails using 1 easy step process that is a feature of the Kipi Plugins that would be installed in Gwenview (automatic photo kb size reduced to nice small size, opens thunderbird, auto attaches all selected photos, all you need to do is address the email and send.
And the software also needs this too (as Thunderbird is already running, this modification of Thunderbird would be a huge boost as a more full featured email client):
see this –

” Turn Thunderbird into a collaboration tool
By default, Thunderbird doesn’t have a calendar, and it lacks the ability to synchronise data between multiple clients. However, the Calendar plugin combined with the SyncKolab extension can fill the void. You also need an IMAP account, which SyncKolab uses to synchronise the contacts and calendar data. You can either use a local Kolab server or an IMAP email account; the latter option is probably easier”.
Well, at least I pronounce them both correctly…
Hey — at least the released it on November 1 — I figured it wouldn’t be out before Thanksgiving. BTW I got to play with a friend’s EEE and it was exactly what Asus said it would be: no more no less. The question is, now that I’ve actually used it, do I really want it? Since I a undecided, I will NOT buy one unless there is an unconditional return policy. The keyboard is small, as is the screen. Good, but small. Too small? Only usage will really tell the tale. Caveat emptor and happy hunting! Looking forward to its appearance at Best Buy… maybe this Sunday.
Well, we’ve generally pronounced Asus similar to Aces. Since that sounds sort of similar to the Spanish pronunciation of Jesus, we call the Eee the Jesus laptop, except with the English pronunciation for added humor.
Yes, if Jesus were around today, he would carry an Eee.
and there lies the tagline for the Asus EEE….
Asus EEE: What would Jesus do?
offer it with that christian version of ubuntu or whatever it was and you’ve just made billions, over night….
I wouldn’t trust how this American woman pronounces things. If you watch the other videos of her attempting to explain the features, you’ll see she hasn’t a clue what she’s talking about, she even keeps getting the slogan wrong. At best a new-hire in the marketing department, at worst a spokesmodel who failed to master her script…
BestBuy has the EEE but only online. So its no different sitch than NewEgg, EXCEPT that BB is back ordered 1 to 2 weeks. So they are irrelevant. When the EEE shows up in brick and morter retailers in the US it will be a good thing. And idea when?
MicroCenter has ‘em in store. I don’t have the cash for my own yet but my local MC had 4 in stock last weekend.
i wait for the 8G SSD
This is an incredible blog, with highly effective information. I do recommend this for anyone to read.
