Rumors About 10″ Eee PC 8G Are False
November 14th, 2007 by antMany websites (engadget, gizmodo) have been reporting over the last several days that there will be an upcoming ASUS Eee PC 8G model with a 10″ screen. The rumors seemed to start with a news post found here on a German website. I contacted ASUS to find out if the rumors were valid and this was the response:
We will have 8G with the same form factor and 7†screen size as the Eee PC 4G now.
There are no plans for 10†at the moment.
Eee PC 8G expected MSRP is $499.99 USD.

I feel disappointed, any news when it will be out?
thanks

Well I have been saying this from day one of this rumors, do you really think you would get +4GB/disk + 512mb/ram and +3â€/LCD for only +$100 please give me a break.
November 14th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
What about 3G? Which edition will have a built in 3G modem and when will it be released?
November 14th, 2007 at 5:11 pm
Good.
No bigger LCD = no higher price.
November 14th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
yes, please post when the 8GB will be dropping as soon as you know!

which goes to show that you can’t believe ever rumour you hear about things….like “The EEE will be a $200 laptop!!!!” and such and all that…
The 3G modem will most likely be an attachment underneath in the mini-pci express slot (assuming you haven’t put a hard drive in that slot instead cuz your SSD died
)
Personally I’m wishing and hoping for a bluetooth module that will fit in that slot
(although cell internet would be awesome too)
November 14th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Sandisk just released PCI-e SSD which will fit to Eee. 8Gb and 16Gb..

I haven’t heard any other pci-e ssd’s.

It seems there is alot of conflicting information regarding this 10″ version. First off when somebody says:
“There are no plans for 10†at the moment.”
this to me is someone not being difinitive. If Asus put a 10″ eee on their site with a early 2008 release the 7″ sales would drop significantly. So I say that this may still be true. I4U news website says:
“During the Asus Eee PC announcements in Germany and Austria last week the German Asus press representative Holger Schmidt made a statement to a press agency called pressetext that the Asus 8G would come with a larger 10 inch display.”
I do hate the jumping to conclusions though from Engadget and Gizmo. I personally feel the 7″ screen is a joke. this screen is like 6″ x 3.5″, that is TINY. A 10″ screen has over twice the viewable area and much more realistic. Go to a target and look at a portable dvd player with a 7″ screen and try not to laugh.

jkkmobile - For the Eee PC usage, it needs to be a Mini PCIe SSD… not just a PCIe SSD (is this correct)?

Oh - for those that want to manage an iPod from your Linux desktop, check out how to do it with Songbird.
http://www.howtoforge.com/using-an-ipod-with-songbird-0.3
Can we load this on the existing Eee PC desktop, or do we have to us Ubuntu, or will the Eee PC do this anyway?
November 15th, 2007 at 8:28 am
Those engadget pictures and skjermskudd picture are from a way back prototype model, before they dropped the EEE 1001. That model never made it further than prototypes…

im not sure if its listed somewhere but is the internal wi-fi adapter G or N?
November 15th, 2007 at 10:44 am
I got my 701 two days ago (rather to my surprise - I thought they would be harder to get hold of so close to the (UK) launch date) and I must say that the most limiting thing about is the screen. A larger (in terms of pixels, if not of inches) LCD would make it VERY much more usable.
With the current 480-pixel screen height some of the built-in applications (e.g. the patience card game) are virtually unusable.

I just had word from http://www.vr-zone.com that the latest batch of Eees removed the unused miniPCIe slot. I’m wondering if this is another cost-cutting measure or ASUS doing its anti-modding thang again.
November 15th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
A $200 eee was not a rumor - it was at the IDF announcement. Digitimes blamed part of it on LCD’s not coming in as cheaply as Asus wanted.

November 15th, 2007 at 2:44 pm
what do you mean removed the minipci-e port? That was a huge feature on this thing, being able to expand it that much more…
The 7″ screen I’m not too worried about, I can work with that…and the 10″ would have to be done in such a way that it was still a tiny laptop.
But no minipci-e? can this be confirmed by someone?
November 15th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
@ A chicken passeth by,
Could you provide me with a proper link? I looked on VR-Zone and didn’t see it mentioned, perhaps it has moved off the front page already.
Asus ban mods?? This is news to me, afaik ASUS is just as easy to scrape some pencil lead or solder on some trim pots as every other MB/GPU, and do they ban overclocking?
I am actually looking forward to attempting to stash USB devices in that sweet screen shell, they already are running a USB(?) webcam up there, so a stripped hub and Wifi stick moved up there would be fine (+ Bluetooth anyone? The Wiimote would look sick as the control device for this!), I could even use the original wifi antenna!
That would free the other Mini Express slot.
Modding unfriendly? hardly.

Here’s something from a recent bylined Boston Globe article about the ee, the OLPC, and the Classmate:
http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2007/11/14/cheap_laptop_as_money_maker/
… The machine is being sold for $399 in the United States, but also will be sold for as little as $199 to school systems here and abroad. “Our idea is to provide computing access to children,” said Donald Leung, Asus product manager, “and to sustain our own company’s need, which is profit.”
…
“They’re selling like hotcakes,” Leung said. “We don’t have enough in stock to fulfill everybody’s demand at the moment.” Leung said that Asus is already making a small profit from sales of the Eee PC, and soon will release a $500 model with a larger screen, as well as two cheaper versions, selling for $349 and $299.

2 months into the future:::
“Asus promised us a 10″ 8Gb EEE for $500 and now they want $500 for a 7″ 8gig EEE!! This is the last straw, Asus officially sucks!”
November 16th, 2007 at 11:14 am
oh and Engadget posting that the German nut that confirmed it is confirmed even though said German nut’s confirmation was officially unconfirmed by Asus doesn’t mean that a 10″ EEE is confirmed, in fact it most likely means that a 10″ EEE is unconfirmed and that aforementioned German Nut was probably a couple sheets the wind at the time of the statement….keep in mind that a 10″ EEE, like a $200 EEE is not a “GIVEN” but a “BONUS” if it happens, awesome, that was nice of them, if not, then suck it up, we all knew it wasn’t gonna happen anyway…

November 16th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
asus staff currently have very little knowledge of the eeepc. at present the uk support team has received zero training in this product. i think that is also the case with France, Germany and the Netherlands eeepc team. therefore calling and asking at Asus might not be accurate information.
November 16th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
The rumours are actually true. A 10″ screen will become available towards the end of Q1, earlier Q2 2008. The Asus response is because of NDA but there will be an announcement next year..
November 16th, 2007 at 3:55 pm
One thing I noticed in the pics of the 10 inch model is that the case is different. Look at the arrow keys. On the 701, there is a shift key next to the up arrow. on the 1001, there is a blank space. Looks like a larger form factor….I will stick with my 701 for now as the size is perfect for the commute and around the office in meetings.

I have found the 8G now being offered as if it is in stock and ready to ship, in the USA.
Does anyone know if this is factual?
December 18th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Yes, some places have been selling 8G models for about 1-2 weeks now. Ex: Newegg has them and other retailers should have them before the end of the month.
These are standard Eee PC’s with the 7″ screen.

I am in Taipei at the moment. I went shopping in “Computer Alley” this afternoon to see the Eee PCs first-hand. A few shops had a mock-up (empty shell) of the 10″ screen, 2-lb ASUS, but it had a different nomenclature, something like 7U or U7, and it was also about 50% larger in footprint than the Eee PC. The newest Eee PC with 8 GB of onboard SSD memory and a slot for a SD card was about $450 (US), not all that much cheaper than neweg.com’s price of $500. And, I probably would have had to pay duty on the Taiwan purchase when returning to the US (because I am already carrying my MacBook with me). The newest Eee PC feels sturdy, and I was able to play with it for a while and found it surprisingly fast loading web pages. The Linux interface is quite easy to navigate.

Oh and i forgot to tell…
Never underestimate the “Osborne Effect”
January 3rd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Osborne effect aside, I think it’s a mistake for Asus to go for a larger form factor. At some point it crosses the line from UMPC to laptop and they end up with Just Another Laptop. Except people will start comparing it with full-spec laptops and more expensive UMPC devices. Guess which one will look bad in the comparison.
UMPC is an emerging niche market that was created by the XO. I’d say the Eee is the most successful commercial product right now exactly because it combines just-low-enough-cost with just-high-enough-spec. Lose either of them and you’re out of the niche. Tread carefully, Asus.

January 14th, 2008 at 8:12 am
I doubt the poster actually asked someone at the EEE PC department of Asus. There are plenty of photos of the larger 9-10″ model on the net now, so why would it not be true?
January 19th, 2008 at 3:20 am
why not 10″?
January 30th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
If they had a 10″ I think you would need a new form factor - although it would be nice to have a screen that took up more of the realestate - but I wouldn’t want anything that made the Eee PC bigger then it already is.
February 12th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
I think the reason it’s 10″ is because that would be the size of the screen if it took up the whole of the current 7″ laptops space and didnt have the massive border around the screen. So the laptop wouldnt be any bigger. Whether its just a rumour or theres truth to it, i dont know, but im holding out for 10″ or nothing haha.
