It looks like several retailers are now offering the first batches of black colored ASUS Eee PC 4G’s. The finish is a matte black, and it looks really great! For pictures, check out this thread on the forums.

Vista is not, IMO, superior to anything but an enema.
I hate Vista venomously.
To each his own. I have never used Linux, but will make it a point to check it out.
I will not be held hostage to an inferior system like Vista, without a battle.
My request to stop these fights about operating systems that are not directly related to the Eee PC apparently has little effect.
Maybe these off-topic comments should be removed.
Hey folks, white EEE with white frame. Looks very nice, even better than with black frame. Here is the link to watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhnjnwbKoRo.
I found this info on http://www.micropc.se/2007/11/21/vit-eee-pc-med-vit-ram/
Great set of EEE PC 4G/Xandros made by Futurilla. Please check this link http://flickr.com/photos/52067454@N00/sets/72157603275238864/
I have a black 4G, bought from asuslaptops in the UK. It came with 1 Gb of RAM preinstalled, and no sticker on the back — presumably asuslaptops removed it to do the upgrade. But I still have a warranty. I’ve checked inside — no Mini PCI slot! Just a big hole where one should be.
Windows XP runs brilliantly with 1 Gb of RAM. I have an 8 Gb high-speed SD card permanently sitting in the side for storage. I find myself using the EEE for all sorts of things, just because it’s easier to pick up than my 12″ laptop! The size isn’t an issue at all. (Although having now got used to the EEE, when using my 12″, I keep thinking to myself: “why on earth does this laptop have such a FREAKISHLY large screen?!?”)
Jamie, interesting to see that you purchased yours from asuslaptops. The configuration (4G with 1Gb RAM) is unusual and I couldn’t find it on dabs. Can you please clarify what colour it is and which SD card you use? Thanks.
Ronald: you can’t expect linux to be mentioned somewhere and not have an argument/fight. Someone will always post about how crappy Linux really is, and then the linux users will counter it, and then the windows users will come back, some poor mac user will say some rubbish about something or other, and its bloody nuts.

Personally….use what works for you, argue your point without going overboard and try to keep the massive fights to places made for them.
and besides…Linux is just so freekin awesome…why would you want to use anything else anyway? I mean c’mon! what’s to really argue about
Help the world one computer at a time, umount -f /mnt/windows
According to Wikipedia, the Surf models don’t have upgradeable RAM. Can anybody who’s purchased one of the 4G Surf confirm this?
To Ronald
Linux is an integral part of the eee concept.
Most of us were glad to see it coming because it promised to be a well integrated system that avoided some of the problems with Windows systems.
Perhaps even more important are some of the other features of the eee which we hope will free us from unwanted delays and data loss…the solid state storage sounds great to me (wear leveling providing long term stability, we hope).
Many of us want something substantially different that what other laptop makers and operating systems have offered before. This IS different, and I hope they keep it different.
To Larrys and fadumpt:
I do not understand your reactions on my remarks.
Of course I do not mind discussing pros and cons of Xandros on Eee PC , or Ubuntu, or Windows XP or whatever operating system one wants to try on the Eee PC. That subject is appropriate here (or maybe more so in the forum). I do object to the dumb arguments here about operating systems as such, without any relation to the Eee PC.
I agree that the Eee PC is a unique concept and that the installed system and other software, are part of that concept. When I will get my Eee PC (I will wait for the 8G), I will probably use it with the software it comes with. Besides, as MacOSX user I feel more comfortable with Linux than with Windows. But I can also understand when someone wants to install a different operating system he is familiar with on the Eee PC. And discussions about how different operating systems relate to the Eee PC hardware, specifically the solid state storage, are interesting. But I do have problems with people who claim that their preferred flavor of operating system is the right one, always and everywhere, and everything else is rubbish, especially in a context that is not about operating systems as such.
Hi Seraphim. I purchased it from http://www.asuslaptop.co.uk. They sell the 4G with a choice of 512 Mb or 1024 Mb of RAM, in either black or white. The 1 Gb model is about £255 including VAT, plus postage.
I went for a Transcend 8 Gb Class 6 SDHC card, which was about £45. This is about the fastest that money can buy at the moment, but interestingly I get substantially faster data rates when writing to the internal flash drive. Does anybody know why this might be?
Here’s another question for you experts. Using Windows XP, when I plug in a USB hard drive I get a message saying I should plug it into a USB 2.0 port. I’ve installed all the supplied drivers from ASUS — although none seem to be USB drivers. Maybe Windows isn’t correctly driving the USB 2.0 ports? Has anybody else had any experience of this?
It’s writing to the internal flash because it’s bus is different. The SD card is using a USB bus which in terms of data transfer is relatively slow. The SSD card in the EEE is probably hooked up with IDE or SATA (I think it’s SATA, especially considering the DDR2 tech in this thing, like new tech and all)
One, it might need specific USB 2.0 drivers (sounds odd though), or…it might just be (and this would be kinda scary) that it doesn’t have USB 2.0 ports (1.1 !!!)
(btw: can you scroll through windows with the touchpad like on other laptops (like a scroll wheel function) in windows and linux if you know.
Thanks fadumpt. I’ll have to investigate whether I can find some better drivers.
The touchpad scrolls horizontally and vertically, it works very well. It operates with the full Synaptics touchpad driver, which has a lot of functionality (flick to scroll continuously is especially useful.)
It seems that green eee 4G surf are now available too!
Best Regards,
Grigorios
i need a very small desktop OS bulid on linux…which i can have 2.5~3GB free space. which one is it?
It appears as if they launched the green one in Taiwan…

Interesting, but I think that Asus should rethink its color schemes here. The white and black are no-brainers. Those colors appeal to everyone. The pink is definitely a girly girl sort of color and should be popular even though it makes the unit look like a toy. The green is also kinda cool. But the light blue should be dumped in favor of royal blue or darker.
I have had my Asus EEE 701 PC for about a week. I bought it at buy.com using Google Checkout. I think it is really neat. For a laptop that is light weight and low price, it does what it does well. It might not be perfect but I can see if filling a niche (perhaps as a realistic ultramobile personal computer?). I will still be using my Acer Aspire with Win Vista, my IBM Thinkpad T23 with eComStation (also on my desktop
). The EEE PC fills a need for something really portable and easy to use.
I show it off to others like a proud geek ‘father’.
I wonder is Asus is going to delay the 8G, as the website indicates that it (should) be ready from the end of November… Hmmm — Plus I think for an extra 25$, it should be an option to have a PCI-E slot
yeah, wil, if nothing else, give us that option…I agree completely
The colored ones would probably be a whole lot more desirable if they had a nicer color choice then 3 pastel colors…and the whole casing being that color would be nice as well…the whole “I colored the lid so now it’s green” is stupid and computer companies keep trying to give us that stuff
on the same note, I think the white one would probably have looked better if there wasn’t that massive black thing going on in the middle around the screen.
Asus announces upcoming release of the Eee PC SDK:
http://eeepc.asus.com/en/news11272007.htm
Off Topic but…
How can we submit news here at eeeuser.com?
I´m asking because eee had some news, like GLP issues (and now Asus response!!), the announcement of EeePC SDK and so on.
None of there reported in the “front page” here (I’m not saying in the forums).
I totally agree with fadumpt about the casing color schemes. If you’re gonna go green on the case then make the entire computer (including the battery) green, not just the lid.
Companies do this to save money. If they had to do the entire case green, blue, or pink then they would have to have different color batteries and stocking for each model. But still, it takes away from the experience when its a cheap lid coloring cop-out.
By the way, has anybody noticed that there are no accessories available yet for the Eee? I’d love a spare battery ya know… I am so scared to lose my charger because I would be SOL out of luck….
it can’t really cost *that* much more to paint the whole thing and I wouldn’t mind the battery being black or white or whatever
SOL covers out of luck by the way
it’s the “OL”
no-one answered the question I am asking too. surf or 702. I am always near outlets, and the longer trips by car for me are around 2 hours. The problem with me is that I own a (battery dead) toshebia libretto 110CT and didn’t like it. If It had a battery I would use it, bt nope, i’,m out of luck. If I Didn;t like the toshebia libretto, will I like this? I am a bassist with skinny figers, but the libretto had the tinyest keys I have ever seen. ( the unit is the size of a VHS closed, on ebay is 200 bucks, half the cost but half the power and no wireless… and windows 98… ouch)
btw I am a student in Highschool.
LOL, if I lose my charger I would be SOL out of luck. It would be so bad I would have to say it twice
While I am really impressed by the eee concept, I would like to see and hold one before I buy.
Are any stores stocking them? Best Buy and Newegg are order only, and no return.
I have recently read about some broad insurance offers like Assurz which allows you to return any listed items for any reason EXCEPT product failure.
Anybody have any helpful suggestions about this?
Can anyone tell me about the power saving features? I was thinking I might be able to use the Eee PC as a portable audio player when in transit. With the top closed can you continue to get audio output through headphones, and expect to extend battery hours?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
NY

Hi! I really need help…..I am 16 and I really really want the Eee PC, it is just what I need to sling in a bag and carry to the beach / to comps and other stuff. But I can’t find it cheap in the UK!! I can easily find it in America and Canada for like $399, which is good, but they won’t ship cheaply to the UK, which sucks. I am looking for the 4g pink version with the webcam, shipping from the UK…I can only find it from PC world, and they are selling it for £270!! What a rip-off. K thanks for any help!!
