Eee PC 8G, 4G Surf, 2G Surf All Available

by ant on December 18, 2007

For those who regularly read the eeeuser forum, you probably know by now that the Eee PC 8G, 4G Surf, and 2G Surf are now all available for purchase in the United States.

There are reports that the 8G Eee PC has no onboard SSD storage, but instead uses a 8G SSD card in the mini-pcie slot. For more information, check out this forum thread. The 8G’ s price is $499.

The 4G surf model goes for $349- it has a smaller battery then the regular 4G, and does not have a webcam.

Finally, the 2G surf model costs $299, and according to this thread actaully features 512mb of ram instead of the anticipated 256mb of ram. Good news!

The 8G model comes with a mouse in the box, which seems to be a Logitech one with Asus logo. Well, at least I have the Logitech mouse (in black), so waiting for the Black 8G to match it :-)

I got the white 8G cause the black one wasn’t available last week. :)

You made a slight mistake. According to the thread you posted (which I’ve followed for a while), the 8gb actually has NO SSD on board, and an 8gb SSD plugged into the mini PCIe slot. You may be mistaking the later posts, where the owner tested the mini PCIe card on his older 4gb model to see how it affected it.

Canada is still waiting for the 8G and 2G .. I have eye set on getting the 8G when it arrives on the website of the computer place I deal with. (unless the 16G will be released in Canada, and shortly)

i was just in Taiwan last week and the 8G was going for NT$14,400, which is about $436. if anyone is visiting Taiwan they can pick one up from Nova shopping center by the Taipei main rail station (MRT exit #3)

And early next year they are going to have them in-store at Best Buy. That number is going to skyrocket.

Got my 8G for Christmas.
Zero defects in the monitor screen, everything works dependably and very well.
Am very pleased with it.

I got the 8G model from newegg.com. They were in stock and shipped promptly.

felipe January 9, 2008 at 5:20 pm

maybe newegg has run out of stock coz i checked just now and only the 2G and 4G are available :( . thanks anyway. any other suggestion?

Keep in mind that the 2G Surf has a serious negative – the RAM is not upgradable! So if you are hoping to snap one up on the cheap, and toss 2GB of ram in it, this is not the model for you.

If 8G model has no actual SSD does it means it can be upgraded to higher disk capacity when higher capacity SD card is available.
