Eee PC To Japan, 16G Coming Soon?
December 18th, 2007 by antAccording to this post on Gizmodo, the Eee PC is going to finally be for sale in Japan, and a 16gb version will also be available for purchase there.
This brings up several questions: Will the US and other parts of the world also get the 16G version? Do we even need that much? Will it use a mini-pcie card to get to that amount like the current 8G model?
We will have to wait and see!

Well, it would be big enought to hold all of Windows Vista Ultimate on it without VLite, but I wouldn’t want to do that considering how Vista constantly defrags, which would be horrible for the life of the SSD. Alternatively, you could use it to store a couple of movies for a long flight or a large number of programs (MS Office + MS Visual Studio is quite large).

Hoo, cool. Hopefully cheap, too.

I have used models with the 16GB SSD. They used the mini-pcie slot.

that would be cool to see another version of the Eee released. As far as I can tell, the Eee line is doing pretty well, so a 16G version could definitely be possible.
December 19th, 2007 at 1:22 am
So, all that is needed now is the version with 10″ display instead of the bizarre/unuseable small 7″ display. Any bets? Q2? Q3?
December 19th, 2007 at 2:27 am
I wanna 1024 X ***
whatever 10″ or 7″
December 19th, 2007 at 2:42 am
I don’t care so much about the 16gigs. A bigger screen is all I want. It’s still cool, though.
December 19th, 2007 at 6:23 am
I agree. 1024 pixels is the minimum screen resolution before I would consider buying one. Considering that USB 2.0 drives are big and cheap, the 16GB means little to me.
December 19th, 2007 at 9:27 am
bizarre unreadable 7″?
I used an EEE for an hour reading news and working remotely over VNC on a computer (keeping windows updates moving) and it was awesome readable…you must be old and bad of seeing
December 19th, 2007 at 9:27 am
oh and Jake….cheap? not as far as our past precedence with the EEE goes
December 19th, 2007 at 10:45 am
a 16G with a 7″ screen would likely retail for $530 USD. according the the way the pricing scheme has been so far, a 10″ screen would likely yeild a cost increase of up to $600+ USD
Just pulling at hairs.

for F sake i just got my Eee from Hong Kong. WTF. Asus couldn’t you have done this like a month back.
December 19th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
I agree, forget increasing storage, increase the screen size and resolution please! At least 9/10″ screen!
December 19th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Potp, I understood the swearing TLWs (tsk…tsk…) but not your point! Done what “this”?
December 19th, 2007 at 5:42 pm
I have to say, a 10″ screen with 1024×768 *would* be pretty awesome

As far as I can tell, the 4Gb E3 PC’s with the mini pcie ports are still the ones with potentially the most storage.
All these new ones lost the soldered 4Gb and gain a mini pcie SSD that will one day be purchasable anywhere.
Kinda glad I got my 4Gb early. The only thing I’ll lose is Penryn processors.

this is a bit old however… seems to be what is probably in there (or something like it)

I bought 16GB SDHC card (6MB exchange speed, 100$ on emay), keep it in SD slot permanently and don’t need any 16 GB SSD. Tried HD video file (saved on SD), works like a charm on my eeePC, no delays, no slow performance..
December 20th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
100$ on eBay, not emay

As much as I dislike Vista, I have to point out that one of its new features is SSD awareness. That is, it won’t store a swap file or attempt to defrag a hard drive if it detects that it’s solid state rather than traditional magnetic media. There’s a faint (and probably untrue) rumor that this capability will be added to Windows XP with Service Pack 3. That being said, without the commensurate graphical capabilities or processing power it’s still hard to justify installing Vista on an Eee.

I’m just glad I bought the original version 4gb Eee pc and now happily playing with it. Even my little nephews can’t get their small cute hands off it. Not at all bothered with the small 7″ screen or whatever. Just have fun with it and enjoy!

jkkmobile has a HOW-TO video up on a mod to put Touch Screen into the Eee PC.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8-BbOWVgXg
finished product video here:

2G Surf - does not have camera so could maybe use the USB for the missing camera for this.
And 2G Surf does not have modem, maybe could use the empty modem hole to store a stylus? Don’t know about this?
Hmmm, total mods =
- tnkgrl’s bluetooth
- jkkmobile’s Touch Screen
- 2G Surf with Flash SSD?
Now we just need a way to get that battery life up so that it is usable for a longer time. Someone mentioned that folks look at a mod of the battery pack to see if AA 15 minute Eveready batteries could be used (and easily swapped) with existing battery internal ones? This is a good question.
As - the 15 minute recharge system works on AC or in an automobile off of the car’s lighter as well. Anyone can wait 15 minutes for a charge, or can carry extra AA battery around (as most do for AA digital camera already).

Love the gOS on Eee PC up on ultramobilegeek blog!
So now combine it with this:
The coolest mod (other than tnkgrl bluetooth), in fact this mod uses tnkgrl’s inside information:
Eee PC with Touch Screen
see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VaerIGpO5Q#
jkkmobile has the how-to up on YouTube as well.
Of course, then go with the 2G Surf (maybe convert the unused modem port to a “stylus storage location”, add RAM, add bluetooth, add extra SSD for the gOS install. Oh - somehow mod the mobile power supply to use AA 15 Minute Recharge batteries like you have from Eveready see:
http://www.energizer.com/products/hightech-batteries/rechargeables/
Features & Benefits:
* Ultimate on the go charger!
* Uses energy from a power outlet in your car or AC wall-outlet
* Charges 4 AA or AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries
… and you are good to go!

This is an interesting computer. But if you want a cheap unit, there are better deals in the regular HD world with more bang for the buck. That said, the solid state HD as it gets bigger will carry what one needs use less energy with a sturdier construction. We’ll see. Next of course if this product is a success, other companies will capitalize on it and there will be several from which to choose.
December 30th, 2007 at 6:48 am
Of course there are better deals — for full sized laptops. There is nothing like the Eee PC in the ultraportable segment, even the OLPC XO-1 isn’t really a fair comparison. If the only consumer issue is price and performance per dollar then the Eee was never truly an option for that consumer anyway.
