Of course there are better deals — for full sized laptops. There is nothing like the Eee PC in the ultraportable segment, even the OLPC XO-1 isn’t really a fair comparison. If the only consumer issue is price and performance per dollar then the Eee was never truly an option for that consumer anyway.

This is an interesting computer. But if you want a cheap unit, there are better deals in the regular HD world with more bang for the buck. That said, the solid state HD as it gets bigger will carry what one needs use less energy with a sturdier construction. We’ll see. Next of course if this product is a success, other companies will capitalize on it and there will be several from which to choose.

So now combine it with the coolest mod (other than tnkgrl bluetooth), in fact this mod uses tnkgrl’s inside information:

Of course, then go with the 2G Surf (maybe convert the unused modem port to a “stylus storage location”, add RAM, add bluetooth, add extra SSD for the gOS install. Oh – somehow mod the mobile power supply to use AA 15 Minute Recharge batteries like you have from Eveready web site = energizer.com/products/hightech-batteries/rechargeables/

2G Surf – does not have camera so could maybe use the USB for the missing camera for this.

And 2G Surf does not have modem, maybe could use the empty modem hole to store a stylus? Don’t know about this?

Hmmm, total mods =
- tnkgrl’s bluetooth
- jkkmobile’s Touch Screen
- 2G Surf with Flash SSD?

Now we just need a way to get that battery life up so that it is usable for a longer time. Someone mentioned that folks look at a mod of the battery pack to see if AA 15 minute Eveready batteries could be used (and easily swapped) with existing battery internal ones? This is a good question.
As – the 15 minute recharge system works on AC or in an automobile off of the car’s lighter as well. Anyone can wait 15 minutes for a charge, or can carry extra AA battery around (as most do for AA digital camera already).

I’m just glad I bought the original version 4gb Eee pc and now happily playing with it. Even my little nephews can’t get their small cute hands off it. Not at all bothered with the small 7″ screen or whatever. Just have fun with it and enjoy!

As much as I dislike Vista, I have to point out that one of its new features is SSD awareness. That is, it won’t store a swap file or attempt to defrag a hard drive if it detects that it’s solid state rather than traditional magnetic media. There’s a faint (and probably untrue) rumor that this capability will be added to Windows XP with Service Pack 3. That being said, without the commensurate graphical capabilities or processing power it’s still hard to justify installing Vista on an Eee.

I bought 16GB SDHC card (6MB exchange speed, 100$ on emay), keep it in SD slot permanently and don’t need any 16 GB SSD. Tried HD video file (saved on SD), works like a charm on my eeePC, no delays, no slow performance..
