According to DigiTimes, ASUS beat their initial expectations of shipping 300,000 Eee PC’s this quarter by 50,000. That means that there are already 350,000 Eee PC’s out there!

Hope they sell a “gazillion” of them & continue to prosper into the future!
Just goes to show that despite a hard core of geek whingers (a chiefly Brit term meaning ‘To complain or protest, especially in an annoying or persistent manner’)clogging up this blog, there is 300K + users out there that ‘get it’. Well done Asus.
Wishing all the best to ASUS, whishing them to sell lot lot more eeePCs. Glad that I’m one of 350 000
350k units translates into projected 2008 sales of one billion dollars (US) per this post:
http://schlerplotti.typepad.com/quantworks/2007/12/from-the-asus-e.html
It was ASUS’ idea therefore they should succeed. Forget One PC per child, ASUS is about one PC per person!
sorry simon but a good amount of those 350,000 could probably be accused of making geek or nerd-like complaints pretty regularly as ASUS slowly did things that they didn’t like…I’ll also assume that most of the people that bought one, are extremely happy with it…Just a thought.
ASUS vs Quanta
Quanta will maybe be comming out with their announced OLPC version of XO but for commercial use, $200 laptop they announced in the Spring.
Problem for Quanta is competing with their own customers, like Dell, HP, Acer and Apple… so, we might not see this Quanta OLPC OLPC-like commercial laptop (because of the obvious business reasons). So – that would leave ASUS, who has lost a few accounts making laptops for major brands, with the spoiler for now.
It’s only too bad that ASUS did not license the OLPC battery and life time of battery at 5 hours and over 20 hours at e-book reader mode, dual Screen mode with outside readable screen, Mesh Networking, etc for the Eee PC. Maybe ASUS will license this tech and build it in to an Eee PC PLUS, version later on? Hmmm, in the wings, the Quanta version of the OLPC, if ever built, is the only thing that ASUS has to fear (as the tech in the OLPC is years ahead of the Eee PC, and if Quanta does a Eee PC size computer that uses the OLPC XO tech, it will be the product to buy (if it ever happens, and because Quanta does such a huge business with Dell, HP, Acer and others in the laptop area, they might be afraid to ruffle some feathers)?
Eee PC rules this day?
@fadumpt
Spare us the fanboy rhetoric, please
350k (if true) is well done and quite surprising. Does not change the fact that the Eee got a lot less interesting after doubling the price.
Personally I’ll wait till something better comes along (read; bigger screen), same form factor.
Doubling the price? They have various models at different price points.
7″ screen is a bit cramped, but i’m willing to deal with it, because its the best pc of its kind at the price. i ordered the 8G for $500 from NewEgg and they say it will arrive on Friday. I’m psyched. I’ll be getting Verizon mobile broadband and hitting the road after that. All that being said, here’s a way to deal with the 7″ size and not lose any portability:
http://www.vuzix.com/index.html
# Twin high-resolution 640×480 (920,000 pixels) LCD displays
# Equivalent to a 62″ screen viewed from 9 feet
# Millions of colors
Models AV920 and VR920 are available now.
What do you say guys? The perfect companion product?
It is called Vuzix iWear video eyewear. No kidding!
JDK: If you want what was promised at $199 go take a good look at what it was: http://usa.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=7405
The 4G selling for $399 is not a doubling of price, it’s a different model. The 2G Surf for $299 is still better than was expected because it is selling with 512MB of RAM.
That video system has smaller resolution than the Eee PC 640×480 vs 800×480. Just because it gives you a “virtual” 62″ display doesn’t mean it looks any better. Before HD all big screen TVs showed the same res picture as a tiny 10″ TV. They didn’t make the picture any better, just bigger, and thus more blocky or fuzzy. With HD they still do the same but the res is much better so it’s much less noticeable.
its gotta look bigger and better than a 7″ screen! they are using it for 3D games. so what will it look like for blogging or email or web surfing? how will it render text? or video chat? i’d love to get my hands on it and find out!
that wasn’t fanboy anything….it was a simple statement…it wasn’t even like Linux or Windows based or nuthin…keep up!
and 7″ is actually far from being unusable because the detail is so high on the screen that text can be read rather easily. I guess if you are an old fart (like some of the ones I deal with at work where they put their new 20″ LCD to an 800×600 Resolution cuz they can’t read the text at native res) then you’ll probably need a bigger screen but the average person should be able to spend at least the battery life using this and not feel cramped.
@Groklaw Reader: the EEE uses more watts then those other two because it’s a more powerful system so to get the same kind of battery life as even the OLPC, you’d need a 6 to 8 cell battery at least and that would hang out the bum of that tiny thing so far that it might not be worth carrying anymore…i guess they can make a flat one that locks into the battery bay but like sits under the EEE and maybe has 2 fans for cooling in it
Update: Based on some new info, sales for the Asus Eee PC could hit up to two billion dollars (US) – based on comments from Asus abut selling 3-5M units in 2008. I had previously said one billion dollars based on my phony numbers. See the update at:
http://schlerplotti.typepad.com/quantworks/2007/12/from-the-asus-e.html
Wish Asus the best…
This is one that is deserved. They just fired of a nuke in the middle of the laptop market and even the PC market. For one simple reason. A good precentage of users just need the feature built into this computer.
Look at the OLPC. its almost double on price for its inital 100 US dollars price point.
I think I have an idea of how the “Desktop” model will be and darn interested if that come to market.
Hi! I’m one of the first people in the Philippines to get one. The moment it hit the shelves….I was on it!
I am extremely happy with the Eeepc! In fact, my compaq laptop just sits at home now…and I hardly use it. I use this baby at home and at work.
The Eee has really changed the landscape of MOBILE COMPUTING!
Great job ASUS! Genius! Truly Genius! Let this be the next iPod!
I’ll be waiting for lots more of accessories and anything that the Eee can use to keep on improving itself. But as it is right now….it is the best gadget I have
I congratulate ASUS on its success with the eeePC. However, let’s not forget that OLPC was the project which gave ASUS the whole idea to venture into low-cost computing. OLPC deserves credit as well, although their project is much less successful so far due to the limited sales model of OLPC. The eeePC is a nice machine but if the XO was widely available for $200, I would certainly buy it over the eee because it has ebook capabilities and superb battery life for the ebook mode.
So, I hail both of the projects and wish them lots of machines sold.
yes,if the OLPC was cheaper (but then you wouldn’t be donating a laptop, and you’d be a bastard) it would be really great since it’s half the power of EEE but has great ebook and general folding features
well… i had an awesome idea. couldn’t i obtain one olpc with the give one and get one program and try modding the screen 7.5″ to the eeepc
eh?
eh???
help me decide if it’s possible. ends dec 31st
mod a 7.5″ OLPC screen to the 7″ EEE PC? :-/ doesn’t seem like your getting a whole lot out of it….I’m waiting for the hack where they take the 11.1″ screen off of the more expensive asus laptop (like get it from ebay or something) and mod that into the EEE (or a comparable 10″ or whatever that fits the housing well enough) That’ll be worth trying if they can figure it out…but who are we kidding, course they can
Eee fitted with 8.9″ screen as early as January? This story popped up here http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20071226PB203.html and here http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fnews.chinatimes.com%2FCMoney%2FNews%2FNews-Page%2F0%2C4442%2Ccontent%2B120601%2B122007122600570%2C00.html&langpair=zh%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF8
The main problem with
the EEE is trying to get
one in AUSTRALIA
Seeing some articles
by Australian news
websites are reporting
Myers is stocked with
the demand and they
cant keep up , yet
the same thing happened in TW and USA
When are these companys going to wake up and release more stock globaly
Same issue with the WII
in xmas 2007 not enough stock in Australia and probly other countries
Other from that the EEE is a great product and it will be interesting if Windows and other operating systems gets an simular interface simular to the EEE with its tabs instead of menus .
Asus RELEASE MORE STOCK!
Apparently the success of the Eee PC exceeds all expectations worldwide and I am sure Asus is producing and shipping at top capacity. There are simply not more units available for resellers.
Here in the Netherlands the Eee PC will not be available at all before, at the earliest, next March.
you won’t see windows with a different GUI simple because the code isn’t open for one to be made and MS won’t spend the time or money on such a thing….and that’s not Zealot talk…just straight up truth.
I spoke to one of the distributors I use at work , trying to get a better price on the EEE, and he said his company wouldn’t get any until Jan-ish…and something about shady ASUS policies
and US companies will have to first realize that there is a world out there before they can plan on sending stuff to such places…and if it’s anything like Ms. South Carolina…that could be a problem, and like, such as.
I have beautiful white 4G
one in Poland, in a small location near Poznan. I intend to put a 16 G sdhc
card in and wonder how it will work with Windows XT on it. Does anybody have an experience with booting Windows from such a card? Thanks in advance.
I just went to Citrus Micro web site, they have the 4G selling for $387.99 and the 4G surf selling for $339.95. I called them to see if correct, said yes and that they just have the pearl white ones in stock right now.
Hello, Mister ASUS,
Please, don’t forget the French community who is waiting the Eee PC
Happy new year from France
the eee become really reality in Italy.. now we can buy it on mediaworld
can i post the link?
so, they shipped more than predicted, yet still they couldn’t deliver the eee to germany before christmas, as promised. i’m not being ironic, there must be something i’ve misunderstood.
