Next Generation WIMAX Eee PC Soon?

by ant on January 2, 2008

It appears as though next Monday at CES, we may get a sneak peak at the future of the Eee PC line. Intel, Sprint, and ASUS are rumored to be showing off WIMAX technology on the Eee PC.

Will it be a whole new device? Probably not- chances are it will feature some sort of usb or mini-pcie WIMAX adapter on the Eee PC’s that we already have.

It will truly be exciting to see two great technologies together that complement each other perfectly.

It would be great if the was made a bit more modular you know swap parts, “a man can only dream”.

A reflection of lame ideas

The 8.9″ screen rumours not worth mentioning?

Markus January 2, 2008 at 10:02 am

I guess they are ashamed to have dismissed the 8.9″ story before. Now it looks like we are going to a proper sized display real soon now!

If I can buy an 8.9″ 1024×600 eeePC with Wimax built-in sometime in the next few months, I would be so happy!

Go Asus!

I hope that the’ll hint at the future of the EEE. It would not be very wise for ASUS not to upgrade the EEE by Spring, since we might already see some competition for the EEE in the CES.

It will likely be an PCI-X (1x) Express Card item.

Luis January 3, 2008 at 1:18 am

I agree with Amon

If they are smart, they *will* wait until the competition is released.

see other companies ideas in this market and then base their next version partly on this new knowledge.

Amon: Not unless they throw an Express Card slot on to the Eee PC. Currently the Eee PC only uses internal Mini PCIe slots. There would be much more going into the new Eee PC if they add more features than just screen size (which is already easily possible due to the current Eee PC screen setup).

Sorry to ask a dumb question but what is WiMAX? Is it like HSDPA?

Kul January 4, 2008 at 4:11 pm

mo: Well, it’s similar.
It’s a protocol for wireless internet/networking

doesnt a bigger screen mean shorter battery life.

I would think so.

That might be fixed with a bigger battery, but wouldn’t that make it heavier and more expensive?

I would think so.

It will probably be the new integrated Intel chip for the centrino chipset and I really hope that theyll include the new Merom L: 65nm 933Mhz x64 SSE3 + SSSE3 + XDbit which will solve the heat problem => no underclock and longer battery !

Im really looking forward for it.

WiMAX? Why of course, that is an Intel supported direction. Why not support both WiMax and Mesh Networking… and look forward to being compatible with OLPC XO wireless network?

Larger Screen for Eee PC? The battery life is short enough as it is?

OLPC is the best on battery life, Mesh Network is built for schools and other uses as well, dual mode screen of OLPC that supports use in daylight is very good.

Does anyone have any real numbers for various Eee PC versions about battery experience between 2G Surf up to 8 G units?

Also – with the 2G Surf, what software is being left out of the installed software?

herby January 6, 2008 at 7:01 pm

I heard it’s shipping with XP. I am hoping that is just an option because I’ve been waiting for the new eee’s to come out, and if it ships with widows, I will not be getting one.

Richard January 7, 2008 at 1:01 am

I agree with Herby. I am buying it because now it doesn’t come with windoz. If it ships with windoz it puts it right back with all the other machines with all the windoz problems.

Let’s not get ourselves too happy. Don’t forget that Asus also produces other high end models. It is highly possible that WiMax might be first used on the higher end models

As a computer technician and M.C.S.E. this is a great DEAL computer. About the Screen, 10″ with 1024×600 or less it will improve quality, but please be careful adding extract items, price it will blow up. In synthesis, ASUS have created so far the DREAM of everybody pocket, they just have to make it better and trying to keep it to the reach of every single one, so Eee-PC will cope the world, this can become the BIG BANG of the laptops users market very, very soon.
