Eee PC Student Trial Opinions

January 25th, 2008 by ant

I found an interesting blog post from “To Learn Twice,” a blog that talks about education and technology. It seems as though the author is running some student trials to get feedback from students on the Eee PC.

He posted two student responses from high school students, one male and one female. Each answered around 15 questions.

The overall feedback was pretty good. It’s apparently difficult for the students to use the Eee PCs in school as the curriculum is not centered around them. It should be noted that the students were in AP Chemistry- instead of a heavy verbal English or History class that you could easily use the Eee PC to take notes with- so perhaps they didn’t have software that complimented their class.

Building on that, the male student noted that “You can’t download programs and you can’t hook up external drives.”

While most of us know that’s not true, it’s interesting that it appears that way to some people. It’d be great to see more student trials where the professors not only include the devices into the curriculum but also find software that compliments the class.

I’m a student and I really want one! Granted I’m a college student with some familiarity to linux, but I think it will be indespensible once it’s in my hands. (I’m just waiting for the bigger screen.)

I wonder if they were told that they can’t install software or hook-up external drives, or whether they tried it for themselves?

I don’t think the Eee would do well in school at all. I’d just sit there online all day :) Actually, the EEE would benefit anybody looking for a small compact ultraportable. Its great for taking notes. Boots up quickly (great when you’re running late for class. lol). Contains most common programs one would need (Word Processing, Calculator, Spreadsheet, etc..) Good for reports (Presentations can be hooked to a classroom projector) .

The Hard Drive comment shows that they’re letting the wrong students use the Eee. I have connected 3 different HDD enclosures, 1 DVD-RW, and 3 different Card Readers to the Eee and have not had any difficulty with any of them.

The only viable limitation I could see would be the screen size, but even that is a stretch for the needs of a student or casual worker. I use the EEE everywhere and the screen size issue only presented itself when installing some programs. Once installed, I was able to manage with a smaller screen (or expand beyond the screen borders)
