ASUS E-DT, E-Monitor and E-TV

by ant on January 30, 2008

ASUS is planning on expanding the Eee PC family.

Today, three new devices were announced: the E-DT, E-Monitor, and the E-TV.

  • E-DT: Desktop PC, No Monitor, Launching April or May. Will use Celeron and will cost between $200-300.
  • E-Monitor: 19-21″ screen all in one desktop computer. Based on Intel Shelton, Launching in September. $499.
  • E-TV: 42″ Plasma, will feature Linux based functionality. Will launch in September.

It’s interesting that ASUS apparently has chosen to use a single E, rather than the full three letter “Eee” name for the series. It could be a matter of not wanting to dilute the brand, or not wanting to create confusion. Certainly, the E-TV doesn’t fit into the whole “inexpensive computing” genre.

“Pricing is to be set to at no greater than US$200 more than TVs in the same class”

drat…

I think they’re overextending themselves. People like the EEE because it’s tiny and portable… the price is just a bonus. You take away that portability, and you’ve just got a computer that’s cheap in every sense of the word. I hope they don’t plan on sinking too much money into the development of these three products.

I don’t know, a cheap desktop would suit me as a student, especially if ram can be upgraded to something like 4gb. It may be quite a small desktop too, meaning it would be easy for me to travel on bus and train with. Are their any photos yet? September is long time away, so will just have to see how they turn out.

I suppose the desktop pc is gone be something like Mini Mac.

The E-DT is a BIG MISTAKE!!! It will be confused with the emachine, which is not exactly burning up the desktop market. Also, if I were emachines I would consulting my legal staff to get a HUGE lawsuit ready over trademark infringement to be serve as soon as the first machine hit the shelves.

The Emonitor is a great idea and will be a success.

The idea to drop touchscreen on eee….not such a good move.

Enjoy.

Emonitor with touchscreen….drool.

Enjoy.

malifer January 30, 2008 at 1:41 pm

why use the same name as e-machines company. they will get sued. its asking for trouble.

guest_anonymous January 30, 2008 at 3:50 pm

+1 what malifer says *drools*

guest_anonymous January 30, 2008 at 3:51 pm

eh, what tim said, sorry :P
anyway, why putting celerons into E-DT? isnt it going to be some pitty-arse slow junk?

HRG January 30, 2008 at 3:52 pm

wow, thanks for quick news, gonna post to my blog this!

Drop the TV. You’re overdoing it Asus.

Great prices for the E-DT and E-Monitor, but I think they’d do better if they were badged as Eees.

teabagginz January 31, 2008 at 3:45 am

For some reason there’s something that’s gonna come along and tie in that TV with everything else. Are they gonna get streaming content later?

Re: Shelton:
“The Shelton core is a Banias core without any L2 cache, and without SpeedStep. It is used in Intel’s small form factor D845GVSH motherboard, intended for Asian and South American markets. The processor identifies itself as a “Intel Celeron 1.0B GHz”, to differentiate it from the previous Coppermine-128 and “Tualeron” 1.0 GHz processors.” (from WP)
And on the Banias:
“As the M line was originally designed in Israel, the first Pentium M was identified by the codename Banias, named after an ancient site in the Golan Heights. Given the product code 80535, it initially had no model number suffix, but was later identified as the Pentium M 705. It was manufactured on a 130 nm process, was released at frequencies from 1.3 GHz to 1.7 GHz using a 400 MT/s FSB, and had 1 MiB of Level 2 cache. The core average TDP (Thermal Design Power) is 24.5 watts.” (also from WP)

Of the bunch, the Emonitor is the most interesting to me. If they can keep the price down to about $500 I can easily see myself buying these things for many of the university labs that I manage, or even giving them to my kids instead of a TV for their room (that way I can use Linux to control what they can and cannot watch, mua ha ha).

nullsmack January 31, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I wouldn’t hold much stock in those prices. If anything, right now they are only there to drum up more interest and if people DO get interested, the prices will be going up by $100-$200. It happens every time one of these companies announce a price early, they renege later.
