Uncertain future for the Eee PC in Nordic countries

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 by djchange

It’s not exactly hot news that ASUS can’t keep up with the huge demand for Eee PCs all over the world. But for the Nordic market it can have bigger consequences than in other countries. Lately April has been the month that the potential Nordic Eee PC buyers has been waiting for. That’s the month when ASUSTeK planned to launch the ASUS Eee PC in the Nordic countries.

In an article on the Danish website PCWorld.dk the Nordic ASUS press representative, Anders Haby, says that they have cancelled the planned April launch and that they have no idea when the Eee PC Nordic launch will take place. He can’t even say if or when they are planning for a new release date in these countries. One of the ASUS resellers in Norway, PS.no, has also been told the same by ASUS according to another article on the Norwegian website IDG.no.

Eee PC Lower Shipments Because of Power Supplies?

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 by ant

I came across this line in an article about ASUS revinues for this year:

But, shipment of the brand’s hottest-selling Eee PC, a budget-price laptop, is estimated at only between 650,000 and 700,000 units for the quarter due mainly to a shortage of power supplies.

This is the first time I’ve heard anything about shortages of power supplies. Between the popularity of the device itself, the other shortages, the Chinese new year, and the snowstorms in China during February; it’s no wonder that many retailers still struggle to keep all models in stock at all time.

SDHC vs Hard Drive vs SSD

Sunday, February 17th, 2008 by ant

Notebook Review has a solid article that covers and compares SDHC cards, Hard Drives, and SSD storage. They benchmark each type of storage device, and you’re able to see the results. This is good if you’re interested in using SDHC cards as a primary or secondary hard drive in your Eee PC, or if you’re wondering about the Eee PC’s SSD versus a traditional hard drive. You can also read a little more about SDHC comparisons on the EeeUser wiki.

Article About Eeedora

Thursday, February 14th, 2008 by ant

If you haven’t heard of EeeDora yet, It’s a version of Fedora modified specifically for the Eee PC- created and maintained by Martin Andrews. Red Hat Magazine has a short article about it with a great overview of the distribution.

Eeedora is a great solution especially if you’re used to working with Red Hat, Cent OS, or Fedora instead of using Debian based distributions like Ubuntu. It uses the XFCE window manager for optimal screen use as well, and comes with a solid amount of software.

I’ve been using it the past several days and it’s quite nice! Give it a shot and see if you like it. The article linked to above has the full details on installing it.
