Eee PC 8G Delayed Futher, Shipment Estimates Down

by ant on February 4, 2008

ASUS hoped to ship 1 million Eee PC’s this quarter- and they were on track to do so- but now comes word that the Eee PC 8G version will be delayed further until the second quarter as a result of hardware issues connected to the flash memory.

The good news is that the total orders of Eee PC’s did surpass 1 million total for the quarter- ASUS just won’t be able to ship the full 1 million because of the 8G delay. Of course, the 8G does not represent a large portion of the orders and shipments- so the numbers are still quite high.

Still, if you’re holding out for more memory, you’re either going to have to wait a bit longer or stick with a SDHC card instead.

Crap! I wonder what this means for the 8G I ordered in January.

At what point do they get a real HDD? If they used a standard format like 1.8″ or compact flash than they can just switch from flash to a regular HD based on which ever one is cheaper. There is no shortage of compact flash cards and it used udma and ide just like a regular HD. This notion that I have to add an expensive SDHC card to compensate for an anemic sized custom flash drive just doesn’t cut it.

Also if they want to increase sales than increase the resolution of the screen. They are just two changes away from having a sales explosion.

I disagree. Having used hard drives for so many years, I was leery of solid state drives – but my eee has really sold me on the concept. It’s been very reliable and fast – I think Asus has made the right move to stay away from spinning drives.

The weakest link in the EEE PC, and no backup program provided. Mistake by ASUS.

dvdivx February 5, 2008 at 2:12 am

There is nothing to be leery of. Having a standard 1.8″ or CF drive would give far more options than the current custom SSD. Also having more suppliers to choose from helps keeps cost down. Users could always switch to a regular HD or whatever since it would be a standardized part.

Pardon me for not knowing (yes, I’m knew around here), but I thought the 8G was on the market already in places like Hong Kong etc.? Is this article related to the US market, or just a new batch of 8G’s as they’ve pretty much sold out?

lops February 5, 2008 at 9:24 am

drdivx stop complaining.
IMO you just want too much for the price of ASUS Eee. If ASUS increases screen resolution, HDD etc, it will be more expensive as well and people will look at alternatives for that price range. ASUS found free niche for business and are leaders there.
People are never thankful.

i’ve always contemplated getting the 8g, but i figure an exernal hard drive at home and sd card on the go is enough.

i’m at school now, and forums are blocked.-_-

how is the keyboard size on the asus eee? i had an nec mobile pro 780 at one time, and they keyboard was just fine for me. is the asus eee any much different? thanks!

The 8G model was available in Taiwan for a short while and only a small amount of lucky (or should I say “unlucky”?) people get them. However, some of those people start to report failing SSD in their 8G eee pcs. Given the number of people reporting the problem in a forum of a popular gadget website, there seems to be a real problem in the SSD of the early version of 8G model. People who sent their 8G eee pcs back to ASUS for reparation have been told to wait for a long time until late February when the next batch of 8G eee pcs are available.

I have convinced my boss that the eee is the way to go – he is hoping to hold out long enough to get the 8g model and run an SDHC card for his personal data. I guess I will have to give him the news that there is a delay on getting them to Canada (again). He might settle for the 4g like mine, boost the ram and still run the SDHC cards.

Wow, I really lucked out. I was searching reviews on the Eee PC and I noticed hat Costco had the 8G model. I ordered it and received it within a week of placing the order and then they pulled the 8G model a few days later. I guess they ran out. Now all they have are the 4 GB models which also come in pink. Ha!
Anyway, I hate the Xandros Linux OS. Though it is simple and steady, it is just useless with many peripherals. I think I will go ahead and dump XP on it so that I can hack my EVDO card into it. Besides, I’m just not a Linux guy.
Cheers.

Strike a blow for freedom and get away from Windows and Microsoft. Better yet, get away from Intel as well. Only when Wintel is challenged will computers get down to $100.

Get over the horsepower thing and computer worship. A computer is a tool, not much of a status symbol anyway.

There are several S-C-E computers (Small, Cheap, Easy) out there, and there will soon be many more. These should take half the market by 2010, revolutionizing computers and IT.

Here are some:

HCL Infosystems (India) : MiLeap X : $354

Everex Cloudbook : $399 at Wal-Mart (not ultramobile)

Asus Eee (Taiwan) : $300 and up

e-Way Technology Systems (Taiwan): $150 : 7′

Gigabyte Technology : no details as of 1/19/07

Cybertron PC : Mini-PC CM900 : $349 : 2G storage

MSI – Microstar International : out July or Aug 2008

Tinhua GX-1C (Communist China, by Sinomac Co., Ltd) : $250
(Think a hybrid economic system can’t compete with capitalism?)

Longmeng/Mengloong (Communist China, by Jiangsu Lemote Technology) : an all-Chinese solution : Mengloong 8″ notebook : Fuloong minibox (no screen or keyboard) : Both use Loongson/Godson CPU from Communist China, which uses MIPS-like instruction set that’s not compatible with MS Windows. Now that’s ideal.

Intel Classmate : $250 : non-US sales (must protect monopoly in US)

OLPC XO : $188

Allied Computers International, Asia (India) : ACI Ethos 7 : $379 : 7″ : DOS, can up to Linux : hard disk drive

Lee, I have 16 Gig AData SDHC, works like a charm.

Daryl February 7, 2008 at 3:31 pm

I bought an 8G from Taiwan and now have it in the UK. I’ve had it about 6 weeks, have put XP on it, also using a 16gb SDHC, and its working like a dream. I’m now abit worried that the SSD is going to die on me and because I shipped it in to the UK, my warranty is about as useful as toilet paper with holes in. Should I be worried about the SSD?? Anyone know what the problems are that 8G users have had??

Daryl February 8, 2008 at 10:42 am

If the 8G SSD is going to be problematic, has anyone come up with a way of replacing the SSD PCI-e card with a mini hard disk that plugs into the existing SSD PCI-e slot?? I appreciate it would ruin boot up times and battery life but would be interested in whether it is possible to remove the possibly troublesome 8G SSD and replace it with say an 80gb 1.8″ drive similar to that in an iPod??

LarryS February 10, 2008 at 12:16 pm

I ordered my 8G back in December 2007 (Texas, USA) and had it in my hands for
Christmas

It does exactly what I want it to do, and I see no need, now at least, to complicate
it with a mechanical drive.

FrostyCannon February 12, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Hi,

Has anyone used a highspeed cellular data card with their Eee? Just curious what the results were.

Dale February 13, 2008 at 11:44 am

I bought my wife an 8g and got it in time for Christmas. She loves it, especially after we figured out how to take the training wheels off and get to KDE. We’ve had zero issues with it, and when the 8g goes back on sale, I’m thinking about buying one for myself. Why, exactly, did they pull it?

joey February 14, 2008 at 3:15 pm

their charging $499 for a 8g eee pc. Are you guys just stupid? You can find a good solid laptop for that amount with better stats!
