Black Eee PC 8G Almost Here
February 19th, 2008 by antIf you’ve been waiting for the Eee PC 8G to become available, It looks like it’s just about here. Over at Amazon, they have a new page up for what appears to be a Black ASUS Eee PC 8G. It’s listed as a 4G, but the description says that it has 8GB of storage and 1GB of RAM. It is listed for $542.99 and ships within 3-6 weeks- this could be the timeframe we’re looking at.
[Thanks for the tip, Dave!]
Update: Amazon has confirmed that it is the 8G Model in the Product Title

February 19th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
This is very odd in that it says that it is sold by Amazon. Amazon usually does not gouge. It has the list price at $599 and is selling it for $543. Has there been a price increase?
February 19th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
BriAnn: quite possibly, I was wondering the same thing.

They need to get the 8g price down to the 4g level.
That price is way too high for an Eee Pc, especially when the Cloudbook is going for 399 with a 30GB hard drive.

In Brunei (that is in South East of Asia - somewhere in Borneo) we already have this 8G and also another type with colors - Pink, Blue and Green

150~200$ price increase is not worth the extra 4 gigs… come on ASUS whats goin on?
February 19th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
Well it has shown up sooner than I expected but I am very glad I did not wait. I picked up my 4G Eee from newegg with a 4g SDHC card and a 1g RAM upgrade with shipping and taxes for $505.
I realize the scaling on the SSD drive costs isn’t exactly like other memory, but I have to agree the price increase seems a bit much esp without some “extras” thrown in (like an SD card).
I am glad to see it looks like it is shipping with Linux as the default OS. (Speaking as an MS slave and Linux newbie).
February 20th, 2008 at 1:33 am
Bear in mind, Asus’ poor design choices means the 8G needs 12GB of flash (8GB on the SSD module and 4GB on the board inactive). Add on the RAM upgrade and it could very well be worth $150-$200 more (to Asus, at least).
February 20th, 2008 at 1:38 am
wow Ran, I got my 4 gig with 2 gigs of RAM and an 8gig SDHC for $480… how long ago did you get yours? i got mine a few weeks ago…
February 20th, 2008 at 1:52 am
Yeah, I found a Canadian retailer who is selling the 8Gb Galaxy black model for the same price Amazon.com is . I’ve only been waiting since mid-November to get my hands on one of these hot little lappies.
When I first read that taiwan was starting to get regular shipments of the 8Gb models I new that it shouldn’t take too long to cross the pacific pond and arrive on our store shelves
Besides who knows the extra $42 could mean they’ve included the windows XP CD in the package. as a second choice.
But I doubt it

I am confused. I have a white 8G that I bought in December from Newegg and it was $499.
Is there a price premium for the black model?
February 20th, 2008 at 2:38 am
It’s probabley to early to tell but they may be throwing something else in as bonus. I gues only time will tell.

I had a white 8g on order since mid-January at jr.com. On 2/11, I noticed that they had a sales page up for the black 8g, which I would prefer, so I called to switch my order. The rep I talked to at the time said the white 8g was expected “late February - early March” and the black one was showing “March”. I haven’t been notified of any price increase on my order and their page offers it for $499 right now, but I guess they could up the price if the specs change?

I just ordered that one yesterday — hopefully it *IS* the 8GB model. The Part # listed says it is….

still has a 7″ screen, and a cheap processor, not worth the price…
I can buy a nice used laptop for 500$….

This store here in canada has been advertising the 8g model for at least 2 weeks, probably more. Very cheap.

I wondered about the price listed there too. Hmmm. Has the memory gotten that much more expensive? Still, it’s good to see that they are getting this one out to market again. I bought mine (a white one) before Christmas and have been happy as can be with it. I took it on a plane a couple of weeks ago and can’t believe how well it worked for typing AND keeping a drink and snack on the tray.
As for the comment from RipOff, above, sure a used notebook can be had for cheaper. This is something else entirely. It’s about having something tiny, useful, and fun.

Tired_ Says:

@Tired_
Where exactly did you get this? As far as I understood, the 8G models do not have a soldered SSD, just the module.
@rip off
Go get a used laptop and quit complaining
The only other device currently on the market that matches EeePC’s price and form factor is the Via NanoBook platform (Everex CloudBook, Packard Bell EasyNote XS, Belinea s.book 1, etc.) and all reviews on the Internet that I have read favor the EeePC over the NanoBook.
February 20th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
People should be free to spend their money or not as they so choose and to comment on perceived value in a civil way. I’m glad I got my 4G for $399, and considered an 8G at $499, but I wouldn’t consider an 8G at $599. Before we know it, it will be midyear and other makers will be offering their wares along with the 2nd generation eeepc. With a list of $599, Asus runs the risk of killing the goose of fable that laid the golden eggs.
February 21st, 2008 at 1:22 am
I’ve been trying to decide whether I was waiting for the 8G or would wait longer for more resolution. This increased price makes me tend to hold out a bit longer. The question is how long this wait might be.
I don’t believe the notion that Asus is holding back on the upgrades as long as the 7″ screen model sells well. As BAM says, other makers will be rushing competition to market, and I think ASUS will try their best to beat them to the punch with their next version of this little jewel. No doubt HP and the others mean business.
But I don’t know how much longer I can wait. I would like to hear educated guesses about a possible release time for an eeePC with higher resolution.
February 21st, 2008 at 3:33 am
get a 4G, put in 2GB RAM and you’ll have double the memory for $100 less … a far better deal, storage comes on SDHC cards
the amazon price is ridiculous for an 8G with 1024 MB ram and Xandros pre-loaded.

@BAM&DougC-3
The competition is coming, but it is not here yet, while the EeePC is already on the market. I do not see anything wrong in Asus capitalizing on their advantage for as long as they can. When the competition finally arrives to the market Asus will likely drop their prices, but let us see the real products and prices of the competition first, not paper plans.
@chris g
Why would you want to strain the little device with Vista? Vista is bloated, slow, inefficient and incompatible with tons of existing applications that run on earlier versions of Windows. Furthermore, Vista Basic is uglier than most of the skins available for Windows XP through WindowsBlinds, for instance.

blah blah blah
anyone have a useful answer?
February 21st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
@tesla, probably a month or so ago. different choices in brands of ram and sd memory in addition to sale or price or not and sales tax or not might account for some difference. (since newegg ships from ca we have to pay sales tax here)
still I am pleased with what I got and thought it was a fair price.
as far as comments on the next gen, maybe I will buy one of those too, but to anyone waffling I say why wait???
February 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 am
Rip off if what you need is instant access to your office from anywhere you can’t get that done with any other device. I tether my eeePC to my smartphone and I’m in business. It’s the size of a paperback. It rocks! Thanks to this forum I can do everything in Linux with ease. Have you tried the Samsung Q1, Sony’s UMPC or the HTC Advantage they don’t have anything on the eeePC other than having faster processors and sluggish Windows and 3 times the price tag. I can’t believe this thing is a 900Mhz Celeron because it flys! I have the 4G right now but would still pay gladly $543 for the 8G. It’s still way cheaper than the alternative.
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:04 pm
Chris G:
At best, it barely reaches the minimum level of hardware for Vista use:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx
Regarding Amazon’s page: if you go to the technical specification section, Amazon puts the weight at, umm, 5 pounds…I’m guessing they need someone to sit down and edit the page for errors.
February 23rd, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Just do the math. An Eee 4GB from J&R (authorized dealer) is, rounding off, $400. They do not charge CA tax only NY. The shipping option is up to you. Next, a Trasnscend 8GB SDHC is about $38 on-line. Again, shipping is an option. At Amazon, the slow option is free. Next, I found a Corsair 2GB DDR2 200 pin for $38 plus CA tax (planning for the future of Xandros supporting 2GB and not just 1GB). Call it $40. 1GB is about $26 (Crucial & shipping is free). That is about $480 rounded off with the 2GB option or $465 with 1GB. Shipping is again up to you. That is still under $500 (rounded off again) and you have an Eee that does everything, although with only 1.3GB of free SSD space. No problem for me. I keep the data on the SDHC and the Eee accesses it fine. My music plays the same as on the SSD. Videos the same. What is the problem. Buy the 4GB now and in white. It has more charm. J&R delivers fast, even from NY to CA. Again, if you are willing to add $16 for 2 day delivery. I did and never regretted it. The 8GB Eee is “pie in the sky”, the 4GB is on earth. Get the logic?
February 25th, 2008 at 6:26 am
The cost of the 8 gig model seems to expensive
US$542.99 which translates into AU$587.78
Then you have to add selling in Australia tax
(Like the PS3 was sold 4 MONTHS LATER in Australia
for an additional US$300)
In the last 12 months I have seen many laptops sold for the retail
amount of AU$700 to AU$800 which special AU$100 cash back deals
which makes the laptops around AU$600 - AU$700 .
They are better value since they have for about the same price:
Optical drive ,
Bigger screen 14/15/17,
Normal hdd with MORE SPACE
you can still install Windows or Linux on it
would probably come with bluetooth already on it
Sure the EEE is good for what it is but for another 4 gig of SD
for an extra AU$80-AU$100 seems a complete RIP OFF
Umart Computer store in Queensland/Australia
lists SD cards for a cheap price and I am considering getting an
8 gig SD card to use in my Asus EEE 701 4gig model.
Secure Digital Card 4Gb(SD) SDHC Class6 Apacer AU$45.00
Secure Digital Card 4Gb(SD) Ultra SDHC Class6 PQI AU$39.00
Secure Digital Card 8Gb(SD) SDHC Class6 Apacer AU$89.00
Secure Digital Card 8Gb(SD) SDHC Class6 PQI AU$69.00
Now considering that these are class6 SD Card
(Is the EEE SD card6 or slower ?)
and its the price you buy in single units asus
should be able to offer the 8 gig model a lot cheaper
when they are buying about a million or so 8gig sd cards in bulk.
Asus are losing a lot of respect , first canceling the idea of
the EEE touchscreen for only US$20 more to each unit
now exorting the 8 gig model .
February 25th, 2008 at 5:16 pm
I might pay up to $200 for just the 8G SSD Mini-PCIe version, if it was available as an accessory. Combined with an 8G for $599 is not worth that much because we do not get refund for the 4G SSD difference. It does not matter because ASUS is too slow to ship 8G models, and I’m looking at other vendors like Sony and Dell for mini-laptops.
The soldered SSD is not a good design for primary storage, so I like the idea of an 8G with separate SSD if the price is under $500. Better - might be a third party selling SSD upgrades.
February 25th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
@foo, there’s a store in montreal that sells the 8gb at 500$. For a gig of ram and replacable 8gb ssd I find it more than a reasonable price difference from the 400$ version of 4gb.
Whoever mentioned installing vista, it won’t work well, why would you try it. Use xp, there’s more than enough tools to have it look almost exactly like vista in every way without all the crap attached.
Also, I’m waiting for the 8-8.9-inch versions cause 7 is way too small I find. If an 8gb version with 8-inch screen and 1024resolution 1gb of ram for 550$, that would be perfect.
BTW, how do those who have one find the 7inch screen for working?
February 25th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
@Compl
Yes. I like the 8G at $500 and got me one, but at $600 it is too much.
Like you say, the price is right and the 1G RAM is perfect.
I’m not sure if the EEE will be able to replace my other lappy for travel until I get a little more storage. I would love to upgrade to 16GB SSD, even if available from third party vendor. I use workarounds for video resolutions and big SDHC cards.
February 25th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
Can you use third part ssds in the 8gb version since it is swapable. Also how do you work around the screen res, and how do you find the screen size at 7″???
February 25th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Charliebrownau Says:
“Is the EEE SD card6 or slower ?”
@Charliebrownau
The SSD built into the EeePC is about 2 to 5 times faster than a SDHC class 6 card:
http://forum.ixbt.com/post.cgi?id=attach:17:27079:2419:1
http://forum.ixbt.com/post.cgi?id=attach:17:27079:2419:2
Complaints… Says:
“BTW, how do those who have one find the 7inch screen for working?”
@Complaints
The 7″ screen is smallish, but completely workable, especially on the move. Of course, I would not refuse a bit more of screen real estate, especially, if the price were right. Looking forward to a possible upgrade to a 2nd generation with an 8.9″ inch screen and 1024×600 resolution, when available and depending on the price, of course.
February 25th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
@Compl
Using XP:
LazerTag and kkjj drivers work to stretch resolution, e.g. 1024×768. Setting 144 DPI instructions by Gators300 makes the fonts readable.
I also use a VGA plug in clone mode for scroll resolution with default drivers. Depends on what I want to do sometimes - games almost require the VGA plug.
Most stuff works fine with VGA plug and scroll on difficult windows. MoveMe by ShadowX helps center and adjust pop up windows, dialog boxes and stuff. If I really need to see more resolution for a program I use the hacked drivers.
Third party SSDs:
Anything with Robson (Intel) controller will not work in EEE, and drivers are for Vista. But, there was a Xandros guy on the forum that used 32G SSD cards (Mini-PCIe) - I’m guessing it was a SanDisk prototype - so maybe there is hope. We should find out soon if there will be compatible “true SSD” storage from third party if the SanDisk Vaulter goes retail (vs prototype) early this year. Other alternatives can be found from other vendors, too.
February 26th, 2008 at 12:03 am
You mentioned games, what games can run decently on the eee (meaning at least 30fps)? also, my intention is to run winxp on this (still am not 100% comfortable under linux), would 2gb make a big difference over 1gb?
I plan to buy the 8gb version with 1gb of ram, possibly wait for a bigger screen version. I plan to run it with winxp, a 16gb flash card for storage, and perhaps in black over white. I like the white one alot but am afraid wear will show much more on it over time.
I’m also looking into getting the stronger battery and keep it as a backup when travelling. Let me know what you think.
thanks

Holy cr4p!
The new 8G SSD is 10MB/s faster on average transfer rate according to that link’s HDTune report!
February 26th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I think that’s what I’ll be going with, but I’ll wait until june to see the price drop when 8-inch version comes out.
I was looking at the cloudbook, man their design team really screwed it up. Too bad. Had it been reversable into a table with that mouse pad for using when screen is closed face up like tablet over keyboard (even without touch screen) it would have been worth it. But for now, it’s only an ugly design, with garbage mousepad imo.

Is this progress? Through yesterday the J&R site had a statement on the sales page for the black 8g saying it was not available through their web site, and to check with their retail store, blah blah, even though they allowed me to switch my order from white to black over 2 weeks ago. Today that statement has been removed from the sales page. Is it coming? My order status still says processing, not backordered. Does anyone have any changes in their order status from any vendor? I’ll be thrilled when they start shipping…
February 28th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Oops, sorry, that little statement is still there, not sure how I missed it. But as of yesterday, they have the white 8g in stock, confirmed.

Has anyone tried the cloudbook yet?

February 29th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Yael, will you be sharing your thoughts about your new 8g anywhere?
March 2nd, 2008 at 12:33 am
@yael can you provide the excaliber link?
March 2nd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
How do you all find the color diff, is the white nicer or the black? I would have got the white but I find the black frame around the screen ruins it.
March 3rd, 2008 at 11:51 am
Amazon isn’t price gouging, they are jacking it up. Check out this comparison chart, the SRP for the 8G is $499.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC#Specifications
Also of note on the chart is that RAM is only upgradeable to 2GB, so if you got a 8G model you would only need to buy a single 1GB ram upgrade to max it out. This is a motherboard limitation, not Xandros, so just use Xubuntu instead.
I am planning on getting a black 8G from somewhere for $500 and upgrading the RAM, so if people could post links to places that have started shipping that would be awesome.
March 3rd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
I don’t think you can upgrade the ram without losing the 1gb stick that comes with it. I think the motherboard only has room for 1 ram stick. The 4gb version comes with a 512mb stick, and the 8gb with a 1gb stick, so if you wanted to upgrade with the 8gb version you’d waste a 1gb stick rather than a 512mb one.
