Next Generation ASUS Eee PC 900

by ant on March 4, 2008

Do you wish your Eee PC had a larger screen? Higher resolution? More RAM? More storage space?

eee-pc-900.jpg

ASUS has your solution with the next generation Eee PC 900 series. It will feature a 8.9″ screen, running at 1024 x 600 resolution. You’ll be able to store 12GB of data, and will have 1GB of ram to access in a package a bit larger than the Eee PC 701. The cost? $600. Look for it in select countries later this summer.

I am with dvdivx. The only thing holding me back from purchasing the 701 was the screen resolution. The 900 although not the size upgrade i was hoping for is probably the best thing coming out in the near term for basic web and computing use. From what I have read lately it seems as if the ATOM will be in the new version of the EEE from day one. I could be wrong though.

anyone know about the webcam? March 12, 2008 at 11:40 am

does anyone know if the 900’s webcam and mic are better quality? Is the mic in stereo? Is the webcam 1.2 megapixel? anyone know? I’m entertaining the idea of using the asus as a portable video logging station, and a live webcam station when I’m doing some extensive travelling this summer.

well then March 12, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Too bad I need this in the next 3 months :( Guess I wont be buying one after all. I can’t buy the 701 knowing about this one.

Ronald March 12, 2008 at 3:46 pm

The webcam in the 900 will be 1.3 MP resolution:
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13844

The single mic will mono. In the 701 it was mounted at the bottom of the machine, in the 900 it is mounted at the top of the screen (while the speakers were moved to the bottom). In this image you can see the tiny hole of the mic to the left of the cam:

Hi, where can I find the physical dimensions of the 900? How many millimeters is it larger than the 700?

Thanks for all your help.

hmm March 12, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Why would they even keep producing the 701 models, when the 900 will be around the same price, and be better?

Krellan March 12, 2008 at 10:02 pm

I rather like the placement of the speakers on the original EEEPC 701. It makes a great Internet radio, especially since it ships with “mplayer” for Linux that has essentially all of the codecs enabled, because as for patent laws, we all just look the other way :)

It will be great to have a larger screen for desktop use, but as just a toy/radio to keep around, the smaller screen seems to work well enough for this purpose.

@Nancy
I have a 701 and I not unhappy at all. I will get a 900 when it comes out and sell my 701 at a loss, but this is life – technology gets outdated by the hour.
@anyone know about the webcam?
The webcam on the new 900 models is supposed to be with 1.3 mega pixels.
@Hydroguy
Ronald has posted above some pretty plausible estimates regarding the size-increase of the new model. It seems pretty negligible.

Francesco March 13, 2008 at 6:04 am

Remember when the Eee was the $199 laptop, an idea derived from OLPC XO? Then came the 299$ ones, then the 399$ ones, then the 499$ one is here. And you cannot buy a $199 laptop anymore.

Ronald March 13, 2008 at 7:21 am

A ZDNet article (in Dutch) about Intel planning to produce a low budget basic laptop, dubbed “Netton”, that wil cost between $100 and $300:
http://www.zdnet.nl/news.cfm?id=81864
The same article mentions Intel SSDs, to be introduced before this summer, with capacities of 80 GB and 160 GB and with (theoretical) read/write speeds up to 300 MB/s.

Ronald March 13, 2008 at 7:38 am

Hm, the Nettop is a basic pc but does not look like a laptop:

JAKE March 13, 2008 at 11:06 am

Francesco, the Eee was never officially a $199 laptop, that’s just bullcrap. Back in the day, that price was just rumours.

Guess what, the $299 Eee PC is still here and still available. The cheapskates can still buy those……. or the $349 or the $399 ones. Nobody is forcing these whiners to buy the upcoming $499 2nd gen.

Go grab the $199 Eee PC and shut the fuck up already.

JAKE March 13, 2008 at 11:08 am

I meant to say……

“Go grab the $299 (not 199) Eee PC and shut the fuck up already.”

in order of importance:

1. make it black
2. preload it with win xp
3. longer battery life

and……….

sell it for $500, this thing will sell like hotcakes.

NATE, IT’S CALLED THE THINKPAD X60 SELLING ON THE LENOVO OUTLET NEW FOR $510. THEY DO GO FAST. SELL OUT AS FAST AS THEY GET ‘EM

Hydroguy March 13, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Milen and Ronald – thanks. I gather from the pix that

Width is same 8.86″
Depth is larger for 900 by about 0.5″
Height is larger for 900 by about 0.2″

This is a shame because the 700 Bezel has plenty of room for 1024×600. In fact they could go to 1280×750 if they wanted to on the700.

It is called “feature creep”. Add a feature, but take away something critical Isize) because after production, the original engineer/visionary was replaced by someone who majored in Cultural Studies or Postcolonial Studies.

Sve March 13, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Clove are taking pre-orders for the 900 but the price is around £470…

Timmeh J March 13, 2008 at 6:49 pm

I want the new 900 nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

This will be one hot laptop :)

Some Dude March 13, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Nice language there, Jake. :|

Milen March 13, 2008 at 8:21 pm

@Hydroguy
Are 0.5″ more depth and 0.2″ more height so dreadful? To me the difference seems negligible.

Yves March 14, 2008 at 1:32 am

I was thinking of putting my 701 on eBay but I don’t like the £470 premium price quoted by Clove and have serious doubts that ASUS can deliver sufficient quantity to enable me to buy one at a sensible price (£250-300).

Ronald March 14, 2008 at 4:50 am

Yves,

That price is for those who are anxious to be the first ones to own a 900. Just wait a couple of months for the 900 to be normally available, the announced European price (€399) should translate to £300. Until then, enjoy your 701.

Brad March 14, 2008 at 5:56 am

The storage size is a joke.

It’s too expensive, this laptop should sell for $249 in my humble opinion.

lops March 14, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Brad in my humble opinion you can go to hell. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. FYI storage size is so small because of SSD, which is lot more expensive to compare to basic hard drive with moving parts. I’m more than ready to pay 400 euro (~600$) for such minilaptop.
I own 701 and will buy 900 definitely for myself. Will give my old 701 Eee to my grandma or somthin’ :)

Your grand ma won’t be too happy if she needs reading glasses already and/or has arthritis :P

I love my Eee but I wish the keyboard and screen were just a tad bit bigger heh

Enrique March 14, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Asus said the the EEE is their best selling product ever.
Improve the screen, keep the price low, and the competitors will have a tough time.
The EEE is top in my wish list, which version… depends…

Could be the kick Linux needs to get to the “general” public. I tried a couple of times for a few days but….

I don’t understand people comparing it to a 14″ or 15″ laptop (a.k.a. 5-6 pounds notebooks).

The 4G in Argentina is 550 USD.

Saludos desde Buenos Aires, Argentina

What I’ll use for:
Internet (Firefox)
Mail (Thunderbird)
Address book and calendar (Thunderbird) to replace my late Dell Axim
Divx movies (replace my portable DVD player)
Docs (ever tried to type a page in a PDA?)
Maybe PDF books reader (no way I’ll buy Amazon’s whatever is called….)

Enrique March 14, 2008 at 8:15 pm

For those complaining about Size:

I use a 2GB Pendrive with:
Portable Firefox
Portable Thunderbird
Pigdin
FS Viewer
FS Capture
ReNamer
VLCPlayerPortable

Plenty of Space for documents, downloaded PDFs and some pictures.
So when I get “Mine” I could use all that in the EEE and still have the Pendrive for extra storage (probably I’ll buy an SD card with a couple of movies “to Go”)

But this is going to be my second PC.
At home my PC has two 320 GB HDD and two external Iomega HDD, 180 and 500 GB. Somewhere I also have a 20 GB 2 1/2″ portable HDD.

But Again:
ASUS guys (I hope they are paying someone to read all the coments) don’t get too greedy. A higher price could not be very expensive for some, but could be a VERY BAD Public Relations Mistake. You where the first and made a GREAT thing, but now competition is catching up, and dissapointed customers could choose another one.

Ronald March 15, 2008 at 5:58 am

If the competition will succeed in offering a more attractive product, that will not be a problem for us consumers, will it? Then we will buy that other product instead of the EeePC. No reason for complaining, on the contrary. However, announcements of future competing products that I have seen so far do not come close to the EeePC (701 and 900) with respect to being small-sized and shockproof and completely equipped and good looking and low-prized.

BTW: Many comments seem to ignore the fact that Asus does not intend to replace the 701 by the 900. The range of EeePC models will be extended with the 900. The EeePC product line will thus appeal to more, not less, potential customers.

Some Dude March 15, 2008 at 9:26 am

> The range of EeePC models will be extended with the 900.

Do we know that to be a fact?

Ronald March 15, 2008 at 9:56 am

From Asus CEO Jerry Shen’s interview:
“Yes, our new adapter is even smaller and the charge time will be very short. We are trying to provide this new adapter in the beginning of April. It will be available with the 7- and 8.9-inch models.”

That suggests that production of the 7-inch models will not stop with the introduction of the 8.9-inch models.

EEE PC accessories on Newegg = 0

Great job ASSUS

Ronald March 16, 2008 at 9:56 am

It’s a good idea that the Eee PC will be coming out with an option for a traditional hard drive with more capacity. The SSD is nice, but it’s just too expensive for the space you get. In the future when the price eventually drops, it would be great to see 40GB or 60GB, but the 1st generation only saw 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB, what a disgrace.

DTEG March 16, 2008 at 11:13 am

Disgrace? Only if you expected a fully viable desktop replacement. I for one would be happy with say a 4GB or 8GB one, considering it more as a memory stick with a screen, keyboard and internet connection.

Ronald March 16, 2008 at 12:07 pm

“Ronald” wrote here:

Well, it was certainly not me who wrote that. I do not know how there can be a second account with the same name. Or was my password so easy to guess?

BTW: I prefer the shockproof SSD storage on a machine like the Eee PC and 8GB would be plenty for the way I will use it. Indeed, “will” use it, because the Eee PC is still not available in the Netherlands.

joey March 16, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Ummm just buy a 16gb sd card…their quite cheap these days… 80 bucks or less…

joey March 16, 2008 at 2:16 pm

I prefer the SDD in the EEE because hardrives make a lot of noise, and their not as fast!

Ronald March 16, 2008 at 6:25 pm

C’mon guys, lighten up. I need the extra storage space of a hard disk for my massive pr0n collection.

NO NO XP. Its very OLD OS. Please do not put on new Eee PC. New OS like Ubuntu will be just great.

Peter March 17, 2008 at 11:08 am

Why are so many craving a HDD? The only one that’ll will fit is the 1.8″ that the ipod uses. Now the Everex uses this and it’s performance SUCKS.

Given that huge capacity SDHC cards will be practically free with your cornflakes within the next 12months, what’s the point? you’d be much better off with a second card port.

Ronald March 17, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Linux is a lot older than XP….

jap1968 March 17, 2008 at 6:37 pm

> Linux is a lot older than XP…

What Linux are you using???

I am using prerelease versions of Ubuntu 8.04 on my Eee PC. It is a -2 month old operating system. Are you sure this is older than XP???

Ronald March 17, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Linux has been around since the early 90s.

Now, if you want to say that Linux is more modern than that because it has had updates, then you should be fair and admit that XP has had updates too!

Daniel March 17, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Anyone has any idea when will this EEEPC 900 be released in Singapore? Summer as in may, june period?

A-tZ March 17, 2008 at 10:38 pm

“Linux has been around since the early 90s.

Now, if you want to say that Linux is more modern than that because it has had updates, then you should be fair and admit that XP has had updates too!”

But Xp is still the same as it always was, Xp hasn’t changed at all apart from a couple of crappy updates where Linux is being changed all the time..

Ronald March 18, 2008 at 7:15 am

I think you guys are splitting hairs here if you want to claim Linux is modern and XP isn’t.

Billy Beck March 18, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Utter rubbish.

“New OS like Ubuntu will be just great.”

Yeah, unless you have to run grown-up apps like AutoCAD.
