Asus release EEE SDK

by Neil on March 25, 2008

Asus has quietly released the SDK for the EEE. There does not seem to be a fanfare or press release accompanying the SDK, but, it is available from Asus’ standard download servers- you can either access it through the Asus Support website, by selecting “Downloads”, or else you can access the European download directly here. [edit by Ant: Appears as though there's some sort of anti-leeching thing going on here- you have to actually go to the downloads section to get to the link to work]

It is not currently clear what the SDK comprises, but, from the file name, it would appear to be a beta release, and is just over 1GB in size.

come on neil

The SDK is still there, but apparently there is an anti-leech protection and won’t allow direct linking.

Go to the Asus’s site support section and get it through there.

So any one figure out what it is an SDK for?

JohnnyTToxic March 25, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Google + “SDK” = Software Development Kit

anglachel March 25, 2008 at 8:13 pm

I’ll rephrase that for you then….

So any one figure out what it is a Software Development Kit for?

Meaning, What part of the EEE, bios, default linux install or Something more?

Hitsuji March 25, 2008 at 8:28 pm

So anyone manage to download it yet and takea look, i’m only getting 10k/s here

Brad March 25, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Well it appears to be a disc image. I burned it to a DVD and when it runs it wants to install Xandros. I’m going to reboot my PC and see if I can boot into a LiveDVD mode without actually installing Xandros.

Brad March 25, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Well that was a waste of time. There’s no Live version, meaning you can only access whatever SDK tools exist by installing Xandros. Or maybe what Asus means by SDK is a full Xandros operating system that developers can use to test new software and see how it would work on an Eee PC. Either way, I didn’t have a hard drive partition I was willing to blow out to install Xandros, so I’ll leave it for someone else to figure out what’s on this DVD.

try with a virtual machine maybe?

Ireng March 26, 2008 at 12:04 am

You can retrieve the SDK from ASUS FT site at: /pub/ASUS/EeePC/EeePC2G!

More details on the SDK release can be found at eeesite.com as well as, unfortunately, info on delay for delivery of 900 due to fire at LG plant which makes batteries.

If anyone is looking to run this SDK on a desktop box, but doesn’t want to install linux outright, might I suggest Colinux? Faster & better than a virtual machine. It allows you to run an instance of linux co-operatively with windows, directly on metal.

steve March 27, 2008 at 4:15 am

Seems to just be a Xandros 5.0 install DVD. there is an autorun.exe but Im not in windows to see what it says. will try it in a VM soon. only asus specific named package is xandros-asus-sdk-guide_1.0-1_all.deb … just extracted it contains a PDF with seems to describe how to get your apps working in a Xandros VM.

The SDK can be installed as a virtual machine (VirtualBox and VMWare both known to work).

si2718 has set up a torrent for it as well:

I dont know if this is new or just no one spotted it… but the site links to sourceforge for it, where there are 3 files available..

EeePC 701 ISO, EeePC SDK and EeePC VMWare Image..

They are fast downloads too..

It’s not easy to see the full link so here it is: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=215613

Asus has posted a Software Development Kit (SDK) for the Eee PC, the better to help coders write new programs to run on the elfin laptop’s Xandros Linux distribution…….
Interestingly, the SDK’s guide documentation refers not only to the Eee but also to the EP20, Asus’ compact, Linux-running desktop widely seen as the anticipated desktop Eee, also known as the E-DT……….
The SDK is availble from SourceForge website. http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=215613

Reading the guide that comes with the SDK, the aim of the SDK is to provide the means to write apps that integrate with the eeepc’s “simple mode” interface. To quote the introduction, “The Xandros ASUS Software Development Kit is software and documentation to develop applications for ASUS products that include the Xandros operating system. Specifically, it is for creating applications that run on the Launcher, which is more commonly known as Simple mode in the ASUS Eee PC and EP20 computers, for example”.

It includes some Xandros tools to do configuration of the Launcher, but otherwise is a straightforward Eclipse/Qt 4.3 development environment with the Xandros Debian packaging wizard, hosted on “Xandros Desktop – Open Circulation Edition”.

I’ve used WinRar to unpack the ISO to my 8G SDHC card in the hopes that I could boot my EEEPC from the SD card but have had no luck. Has anyone got this to work?
