EeeUser.com - not quite so “unofficial”?
March 25th, 2008 by NeilEeeUser.com is probably the number one resource on the web for EEE users, with a large number of active contributors, and a good success rate in resolving users’ problems. However, don’t just take my word for it - forum user Picotrain posted an email suggesting that even Asus views the site as the best way to support its customer base, providing links to both the EeeUser.com forum and wiki as the first port of call for those experiencing difficulties:
“Thank you for your support of our products!
Here are a few website that can help with any Eee pc issue. These site can also help you understanding Linux and how it works. If nether of these site can help you with your Eee pc problem feel free to call Asus
The first link give you alot of information and fixes and how to use the Eee PC
The second give you information about new products for the Eee and a Forum where you can get information and ask question.
It looks as if EeeUser.com has moved from an unofficial online fanbase to a useful (and, to Asus, if not to ant, free) resource for the device’s manufacturer… Let’s just hope that some of the Asus support representatives, or, even better, developers, are reading and contributing the site also!
See here for discussion of the email, and its potential implications.

Congratulations on achieving this amazing status.
Kudos.

EeeUser is definitely the best Eee resource on the net, but it sounds like Asus is trying to offload support work onto the Eee community, really. If they can get Eee owners to do tech support for them for free, why spend money doing it themselves?

Congratulations!

This site indeed is really successful. I knew from the start. Congratulations.

I wonder if Asus has approached the hoster with any offers to help with server costs or advertising…
March 25th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Haha talk about a huge shout-out! I’m fine with it, as long as ASUS reads the boards, contributes to the forums, and takes our voice into account (which they seem to be doing so far thanks to all the improvements they are planning for the future EEE 900 line, seems like they took our feedback here seriously).

Ye! “unofficial”,
but very professional
March 25th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Congratulations!

Congratulations, ant, Neil, et al.!

Sort of similar to what the thinkpads.com forum has become to IBM/Lenovo users - when Lenovo created a support forum late last year, they enlisted many of the admin/moderators from thinkpads.com to have similar roles in the official Lenovo forum, thus implicitly recognising the benefit of user-based interaction and technical advice.
Asus would do well to follow suit, and get the main people here on board to help out.

I think this is just great!
Asus sends his customers to a place where every existing bug will sooner or later be discovered!
If the bugs are in hardware Asus will be forced to provide a solution or get some really bad press!
Here is a nice example:
I live in Germany and a german site reports that Asus is going to sell the 4G Modell with a smaller battery (4000mAh instead of 5200 mAh).
Now every user redirected from Asus to EEE-User will immediatly be informed what a stupid idea that is!

I check this site everyday and it helped me a lot to increase my Linux knowledge working with EEE PC and Xandros distro.
), apart from referencing it to customers.
Would be nice if ASUS would do something more for this site (ie. funding it a bit

http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/26/official-asus-8-9-inch-eee-pc-will-include-touchscreen-possibl/
Here we have it, confirmation that the second generation Eee PC will in fact feature an 8.9-inch (resistive) touchscreen display. Kevin Lin, ASUS VP of Sales, says that the $500 (starting price) Eee PC will begin shipping in May or June in 8GB to 12GB options with “possible GPS support.”

eeeuser.com rocks! since before eeepc’s release too. Congrats!

Great news, kudos :)!

nice, although if asus feels they can direct people here i believe they should contribute some more. How about paying the hosting fees? after all thats pocket change to them
March 26th, 2008 at 9:39 am
It’s the truth EeeUser.com has answered most if not all of my questions by a quick search of the forums.
Nice to see Asus giving credit where it’s due.

I don’t know if you realize this or not but I bet most of your IE users (at least) think your site comes up with blank pages since the body of the content does not show until you scroll to the bottom of the page. Now, I know people like their Firefox browsers an’ all but any publisher that cares about the usefulness and popularity of their site has to know that you can’t FORCE everyone to use Firefox simply because “you” like it. A little “cross-browser” compatiblity goes a long way. …just trying to be helpful–maybe you didn’t know.
March 26th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
I second that, a better compatibility with IE.
March 26th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Great news I think.
The lesson is clear: trust the users, because when it comes to Linux, they are a great resource.
March 26th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Unless the creators of this site can’t afford to pay for hosting, it would seem to me that asus paying for it would be a bad thing. Being completely independent is ideal as it gives you total freedom to make suggestions, criticize, and maintain complete control over the content of the site without the risk of losing support. As it is, you’ve built up a ton of credibility, I wouldn’t want to see anything detract from that.

@Spherion
IE is not the only browser affected by this. It is the same under Opera. I guess that there are quite a few people using Opera on the EeePC, because of its excellent webpage scaling capabilities.
March 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I am - Opera < all
No problems for me though.
March 27th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
I don’t experience that problem running IE 6 or 7.
March 28th, 2008 at 5:15 am
If you are having problems viewing the site, please can you check your theme settings for the forum? I believe that if you change to “Oxygen”, you should be fine?
March 31st, 2008 at 5:47 am
Unofficial?
Could have fooled me
The Asus one is totally rubbish but for the fact it has some source code on it.
Congratulations on a great site.
No. Congratulations being pretty much _THE_ Eee PC site.
DO NOT EVER EVER SHUT DOWN !!!

Excellent news! I consult the forum almost every day - and the blog fits perfectly on my eee screen. Thank you for such a valuable resource.
