Fire At LG Battery Factory To Affect ASUS Output

by ant on March 26, 2008

The recent fire at an LG battery factory is creating quite a shortage for ASUS’s laptops, including the Eee PC. According to an article on Yahoo, 40% of Asustek shipments could be affected by the shortage created. This Digitimes article also says that ASUS hopes to resolve the problems by the second quarter of this year.

We’ll have to wait and see if the battery shortages play a large role with inventory of current Eee PC 70x’s– or if it causes a delay in the Eee PC 900 series.

You guys are doing a great job of keeping ontop of the ASUS info. Great site guys.

Yikes. That sucks badly. I hope, if true, they get it resolved!

I was wondering what excuse they were going to come up with so they can delay the 900.

I asked a local (US) dealer when they would be getting in the 8GB model. His response was that notification continues to be delayed. First, it was February, then it was moved to March, then the end of March, & still no word. I had already suspected that it was a supply problem (similar to what Apple saw with Motorola’s & IBM’s ability to fulfill PowerPC orders…). I would suspect that a supplier’s factory loss isn’t going to help the situation. That’s why I went ahead & ordered the 4GB model.

i’d take a new asus eee 900 pc without a battery =)

honestly i never use the battery, always use the adapter.

i want my eee 900 dammit and that stupid fire wont stop me 0_0

guys do you really believe ASUS will have the 900 soon, battary plant fire or not?? I mean the original eee was reported to be available at the beggining of august. In reality it started shipping 5 months from that date, and even today, you cant have a decent supply of 701 eee….

so really dont expect 900 to be available till next christmas, battary fire or not.

…the roof…the roof…the roof is on FIRE.

Well … AFAIK, all the notebooks and umpcs are using 16850 standard li-on batt, so if the batt supply is causing a delay in 900, then other umpcs would be delayed as well etc.

I’m wondering why Asus will not or can not get other suppliers for batteries. I mean, there are still notebooks of all shapes and sizes churning out of the factories out there … right? :?

Anyway, my eeepc is good for at least another 1~2 years … so in the meantime, I’m only concerned about the lack of extended batts than anything. :)

Seems I will have to wait a tad bit longer to get my EEE…*sigh* i was really hopin to get a large linux model out of the 900 series……perhaps I will just settle for the 1st gen….so do you think the falling US economy will also have an impact on the sales of the new EEEs?

waste March 30, 2008 at 7:40 am

well I dont think so. The eee is dirty cheap and if the bleak economic outlook of the US does something, it will be more sales of the eee (from users that would buy more expensive ultra portable laptops)

The 8G Eee PC is now available. Go to http://backpackcomputing.com for the link and the latest news and deals on ultraportable computers.

They’ve had the 8G Eee on amazon for a couple weeks now……..

Rane March 30, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Idk if you all know this or not, but the 900 series just hit the FCC according to endgadget

@Rane,

Thanks. Best posting on this site for a while!

I noticed the AC adapter provides 12V in those pictures – good thing my EEE external DVD style battery has a 9V/12V switch. Awesome!

Yeah. uhm, what about the workers at the factory? are they ok?

Daniel April 3, 2008 at 9:03 pm

yeah..realised that no one asked abt the workers..

anaon April 4, 2008 at 2:45 am

lol ? who cares ’bout the workers ? Consumer egocentrism ftw !

Maybe the fire was intentional. Ye know, competition, greed, any means nessesary :-)

The cell spec is 18650. Do you know that the cell is very very lack this year? first it’s panasonic battery factory caught fire, then LG.

One of Asus motherboard also caught fire last month. It seems there are many fires recently!

Most of brands’ notebooks have been affected

Amanda April 6, 2008 at 1:36 am

I mean one of Asus motherboard factory, not it’s product

xing April 7, 2008 at 1:45 am

yes,
this year, the cell is very very missing, because of the fire at last year, creating quite a shortage for every laptops factory;but some replacement laptop battery factory had supplied battery for eee pc,everybody see here:
