Eee PC 900 Coming Later This Month?
April 11th, 2008 by antAn article over at Digitimes claims that the Eee PC 900- the next generation Eee PC featuring an 8.9″ screen- will hit the Taiwan market later this month.
They will not feature the new Intel Atom processors just yet, as this will allow ASUS to get the new Eee PC out before the onslaught of new first generation devices from Acer, HP, and others. Look for the Atom processors at a later date.

April 11th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Anyone know when these will hit North America?
April 11th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Digitimes says first ones will use the “older generation dual core ULV processors”. What is the effective difference in operation between the dual core and what is expected from the Atom? I am assuming that the Atom uses less power and will result in longer battery life, but other than that what difference is it likely to make in these machines?
April 11th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
The Digitimes article says that Atom will be introduced into “later versions” of the EEE. Does that mean Atom will appear in later models of the 900, or in an entirely new revision in the future?

I can’t decide - panic or lies?
Can’t decide.
April 11th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
cnt wait for eeepc 900. if marketed properly, could become a huge product. ipod scale;huge impact. But judging by Asus’ lacks of organisation so far, im reluctant to believe this will become a reality.
April 11th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Since I already have an EEE 701 Galaxy, I’ll just wait for the Atom Galaxy 900 series
April 11th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
I already started a topic about it yesterday

April 11th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
just got the blue 701 w/linux today from amazon. LOVE it, it just takes a bit to get used to the keyboard. when the 900 comes out, i’m upgrading. ALL, literally ALL of my friends are offering to buy this one from me when i upgrade!
Now, on to the questions:
is it supposed to be this noisy and warm?
what type of SD card do i buy to go with it? the san disk ones i use in my cameras?
also, any specific wireless mouses for when i use it at school for long periods of time?
any way i can have it recognize wifi instantaneously, instead of clicking on web connection/network button?
April 12th, 2008 at 1:23 am
-noise? only if I place it on a pillow og blanket so the air vents are blocked. Otherwise mine is quiet as a grave.
-warm? yes a bit - but less than most other portable pc´s.
SD card? I bought a Sandisk 8GB extreme III (class 6) - works flawlessly - I can boot my eeeXubuntu from it and use it for documents. (it comes with a little cardreader to transfer stuff easily from other comps).
wireless mouse? be sure you need it - a wireless consumes more power - also for the transmitter on the pc - and you need to carry around spare batteries for the mouse.. a small wired one is my friend
(an older Atek)

Some news in Australia - Officeworks (an office stationary supply store, also sells pc stuff) has the eeePC 4G (701) as a ’sell out’ item, as in ’sell all remaining stock, new version coming in, not getting old version anymore’.
Interesting!!
April 12th, 2008 at 5:03 am
Well I guess we will all have to continue to wait and see huh
April 12th, 2008 at 6:36 am
yeah, that’s the best be patient for the official release! everything else is pure guessind and reading the magic ball
April 12th, 2008 at 9:34 am
I have specific questions regarding the Asus. I am reading that it is “fully compatible with Windows XP”. Does this mean I can run Microsoft Word? or Word Perfect?
Can the lap top run programs that are on a memory cards from the USB port?
What are my hard drive options? Is there one that can be used via USB port and run programs? How do I install Windows XP?

I’d take articles from Digitimes with a BIG grain of salt– they were the ones pushing the rumor that it would have GPS and a touchscreen and claimed that ASUS had confirmed it.

hmm isn’t the atom processor version scheduled for release in may?

The bigger screen on the PC 900 looks great. Has it got a bigger hard disk and more RAM? Still waiting for my Eee PL-L to arrive, don’t think I could have waited for the new machine. The thing is, you can buy a proper laptop for £300 so if it’s more expensive than that it may not sell in such high numbers.

“I’ve just saw that there’s an eee pc 900 on sale on e-bay. who’s gonna be the lucky one:) ”
Anyone who loses that auction is likely the lucky one. I don’t think a cash equivalent payment to someone with no selling feedback is an especially good way to buy one.

I got a Eeepc 701 and I will be buying 8.9 screen laptop what ever brand that comes out first in Australia. 7 inch screen is very limited use and I want 8.9 inch screen. I prefer HP 2123 mini note pc because of the hard drive and bigger keyboard, but if Asus would be release soon in Australia before HP 2123 which might be release in Australia next month (May). I will probably opt to buy Eeepc 900
April 13th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
Thats is true…I’m getting very impatient myself…I will also be getting whatever comes out first…darn Asus…..
April 13th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
What is with the spacebar? Why is it all cockeyed? the left side of the spacebar seems to be lifted higher than than the right side. For those of you that own the 700 series, is this also the case with them?
April 14th, 2008 at 4:18 am
*&%%$ Asus are good and annoying at the same time
It sounds like a REPEAT of the Asus 701 again
release in only one country per month , limited stock
in each country ,
probly still NO TV OUT port (wanted it on the 701)
A good screen is good and if its going to sell for the same
exact cost around the world as 701 then thats good
but Why do I get the bad feeling once the 900 is coming
out the 701 will disapears from stores and it wont
be offered at a lower cost.
I doubt the 4gb surf even made it to Australia
Ive only seen the white and black sold in Retail stores
only (not wholesale farking hard to get it wholesale in AU)
I guess getting it 2-3 months after asia and after
usa is better then sony releasing the PS3
in AU without PS2 compatbilty mode and for
US$300 more then the USA model which was sold
4 months ahead of AU getting it for more cost
but offering less value)
I will still recommend the EEE if you can get it for
AU$480-$490 but if the 900 model goes over
that price in Australia ill start recommmending
the old 701 or alt product.
Australia - The laggy shafted country , were so lucky
April 14th, 2008 at 6:05 am
I own a 701 and I will be getting a 900 as soon as they get one with the Atom processor in Canada. I love these devices!

This is going to be such an interesting market. Acer, dell, Hp, ECS and of course of course Asus are all soon to be releasing competitive products. I just hope I don’t purchase one too quickly an live to regret it because something better for a similar price comes out.
April 14th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
theres a new youtube video showing the eee pc 900
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz0QYI104cI
April 14th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
@Charliebrownau
The supplies are limited, because Asus cannot keep up manufacturing in par with the demand. They are unable to obtain key components like batteries in the necessary amounts. This was in the news already.
Why should Asus drop the price on the older models, if the demand is so high and there is yet virtually no competition at their price point, although competition is definitely coming? Why do you expect to buy a product in retail quantity at wholesale price? It’s against market logic.
April 15th, 2008 at 9:23 am
I also have a 701 4Gig Perl White. I love my Eee but long for a higher res screen. But since I already have one I am going to hold out for a flat white or flat black Atom based Eee. I have been looking at the other “Race to the bottom” laptops but every other one just looks like it will breat itself just sitting there. The Asus is a dang solid little “knee top” computer.

I intended to keep my 701 for two years. Maybe I’ll upgrade in December after reviewing the models offered by ASUS’s competitors. There is no reason to believe that ASUS will be offering the best 9″ model.
April 16th, 2008 at 1:32 am
I currently own a Black 701 Surf (4 GB) using 2 gb ram and runs w/xp and eeexubuntu (8 gb class 6 sd card. It meets both my needs or portability just fine. I can live w/the 7″ screen for now.
While I look forward to investing in a 900 series, I’m in no hurry. I want to see what it will come with in terms of the Intel Atom series CPU and cost. The existing 633/900 mhz celeron runs ok, but it needs more cpu speed/power if we have no option but to use Vista in the future. I tried a modified Vista on my EEE, but it barely ran it even at 900mhz. The EEE PC could really take advantage of a 1+ ghz intel cpu with 1 mb or more of L2 cache., not 512 K.
April 16th, 2008 at 3:02 am
ed, sounds like you are one of those who try to fly to the moon with Smart’s Mini Cooper. Eee is not intended to be used with Vista. Get real man!

They would be sold at the same price (HKD$ 3998)
April 17th, 2008 at 12:31 am
Lops, why are you over analyzing what I post here? Just like any other EEE PC hobbyist here, I was only experimenting with Vista on my 1st generation EEE pc. We all know that XP’s life cycle support is slowly on it’s way out the door and we will be forced to use Vista/Windows 7 if we still choose to use Microsoft products. Therefore Asus will have to ante up the capabilities of their EEE series to properly run these newer O/S’s. That’s all I was stating.
I look forward to buying an EEE 900 series with a newer intel cpu when the time is right.
April 17th, 2008 at 2:04 am
ohh don’t cry. Microsoft extended WinXP support till 2010 for low cost pc/laptops such as Eee. So don’t even look at Vista for an other 2 years. And nobody forbids you to use WinXP for an other 2 years after 2010 even if it’s end of life
April 17th, 2008 at 2:17 am
XP support till 2010 is enough, I think…
Because of the eee and other umpcs Vista seem to end up like Win ME few years ego.
Vista will be won’t fill any gap and won’t be needed although it’s ‘new generation os’ like microsoft claims. When xp’s support stops, a new windows will come up, and vista will be no more than a mistake.

The 8G utilise a four-cell 5200mAh battery
The 4G Surf and 2G Surf uses slightly smaller 4400mAh battery.
But, Asus release a new battery, 7800mAh. That would last for about 4 hours.
Those are not in a hurry should wait until they put the new Atom processor in it, which will have lower performance and lower consumption. If I’m not wrong.
April 17th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Since both versions of the EEE 901 will cost the same in HK, it just shows how expensive M$’s license is. 12GB vs 20GB SSD.

Guys in case you’re wondering, look at the news release on Asus’s website.
12GB is 4GB SSD built in PLUS 8GB flash drive
20GB is 4GB SSD built in PLUS 16GB flash drive.
April 18th, 2008 at 12:47 am
errr… why not just a solid 12gb/20gb SSD? how annoying and dumb of them.

April 19th, 2008 at 3:33 am
yes i did read what he said, and he didnt explicitly state which battery the eee pc 900 would have. only what the old one 701 contained, and the fact that there would be a new battery. Never was it made clear which the 900 would use. Jeez. ha
April 19th, 2008 at 9:41 am
If you don’t even bother to read what other people have posted about the new 900, it still uses the 5800mah batt for now. OK!

The 900 now availabe in Hong Kong for HK$4380.
April 20th, 2008 at 7:08 am
The price of EeePC 900 in Hong Kong is $3,998, not $4,380.
However, the battery with 900 is 4400 mAh, instead of 5800mAh, which shown in many media before.
April 20th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Its $HK3998 bonehead.
April 20th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Who knows, maybe because demand is so high some retailer is adding a bit to the price. I don’t want to complain, but it’s been a while since the front page has been updated with news.
April 20th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Does anyone knows if there is a table or something that compares the EEE 900, HP 2133 and the MSI Wind (like screen size, bat, process, price, weight, extras, etc)??? Cos I’m going to buy a tiny one and need some hep to decide.
April 20th, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Supply & demand! Some retailers sold out.
Others now asking HK$4560 for the 20Gb version. aaaa I guess you not been out on the street 20th April.
