Eee PC 900: 4400mAh or 5800mAh Batteries?

April 29th, 2008 by ant

If you haven’t been following the news of the Eee PC 900’s release in Hong Kong- some initial users have reported getting 4400mAh batteries with their new Eee PC devices. The problem? Early reviews showed the Eee PC 900’s came with 5800mAh batteries- a considerable difference.

But ASUS has stepped up to the plate to give this story a good ending: they are going to replace the 4400mAh batteries of the early adopters with the better 5800mAh ones. Good work, ASUS!

It’s said this former no. 1 news-page for the EEE-PC is so slow in posting news.

Much too late to post :(

At least they posted it. I hadn’t read about it elsewhere.

    Stop harpin’ on eeeuser.com man!
They are so thorough and good to the community.
Maybe they’re just waiting to get to facts out and not the crappy gossip!

Well as also stated in the forums the early UK versions were 4400 mah as well and I can’t see how asus will replace all of these batteries. I just hope that even the early UK models were a dispatch of before the incident ocured and the later models will have this problem fixed.

Lower battery capacity is not such a deal breaker but I believe customers would have apreciated much more a truthfull report from asus rather than a misconseptuous press release with no real information about what they really intend to do.

I guess when the “official” release date in UK arrives we will know for certain wether they plan to go on with the 4400 battery or it was just an early mistake.

This news post does not mention that the free replacements mentioned in said press release have only been announced for Hong Kong customers, or that it’s only for Hong Kong customers who bought soon after its release, or that it’s unclear what batteries will be distributed in other countries or whether there will be a similar free replacement available for those countries, or that reports are emerging that units sold in Taiwan have the higher spec battery, or that reports are emerging that units sold in the UK have the lower spec battery.

This news post is misleading and poor journalism in that its only source is a fourth hand account of a translation of a press release that states that free battery upgrades will be given to Hong Kong customers, and yet it somehow twists it into a story about how all Eee 900 owners are going to get free battery upgrades.

What’s more, if you follow the links back you’ll find that the said press release is no longer there. It seems to have been pulled from the ASUS Hong Kong website, unless jkkmobile, where this was sourced from (via engadget) made a linking mistake.

And as others have pointed out, it’s old news too. It was reported on at jkkmobile and engadget on April 22 and this post doesn’t give anything new that those articles didn’t give.

    Hi,

Thanks for the slams, all. This isn’t my day job- I spend what free time I have working on this website because I’m actually interested in the Eee PC. I’m not a journalist or a superb writer, but I do my best. There are plenty of alternative websites listed on the Links page- perhaps they will suit you better.

Isn’t it awesome how when you do something as a hobby/spare time for nothing or ultra-cheap…suddenly people expect the world from you?

Like with computers: Give the average person a computer for nothing and they expect free tech support until the thing melts away….sell it to them for a profit and they’ll pay you every time for support. I’m slowly getting out of helping people with computer problems because this :(

Ant, this site needs a redesign! You also need to change the picture of the 701 to the 900 in the logo. I mean can’t you do it in your 2-3am slot? Is that too much to ask??

    ;-)

Your doing a great job ANT and there are those of us who are grateful for what you’ve done. For those of you that are nit picking, this is supposed to be a community so instead of bitching you should be contributing so that the info remains up to the speed of you liking and if you don’t feel like doing it there are other sites you can visit your not paying a monthly fee so deal.

  17. Smuuv Says:

ANT, thank you for this site. It’s because to this site that I bought an EEE PC. I lurked here for months before taking the dive. I wish I had the time to come up with a gift as nice as this site. I’m being as sincere as can possibly be when I say, thank you.

    @F J Walter
This is hobby blog as ant has pointed out, not a commercial news site. If you are so worried about high quality journalism, go read news about the EeePC on NYTimes.com or FT.com.

Thanks ant! Keep up the good work! Your effort is much appreciated!

  19. F J Walter Says:

    Ant,
My comment was given in the spirit of trying to improve this blog. I want this blog to survive, even to thrive. The forums are currently the best forum-based resource on the Eee PC and it would be great for the site if the blog matched it in quality, making it also a great source of timely news about the Eee. I know from experience how difficult it is to maintain a blog. You could take on my comments and make this blog the best it can be, or concentrate on other things. If you are having trouble keeping with the blog, perhaps find someone who is willing to blog for you, of which there are countless candidates. The Eee is a very popular product and an extremely big market, with an expected 3 to 5 million units to be sold this year and yours is the primary site for Eee discussion forums. Your current traffic levels would be extremely high - webmasters would be very envious of your position. The site has a lot of potential, so why not move beyond a hobby blog and provide the best blog possible?

I just bought a EeePC 900 today in Hong Kong and checked the battery at once. It is 5800 mAh. Good.
We, HKPUG, will have a tea gathering tonight in a cafe. Most likely there will be about 30 people joining and there will be about 10 units of EeePC 900 show up.

  21. JK Says:

i have a uk realesed 900, and no its not got a 5800 battery its the poor 4800, and its dire , it struggles past 45 to 50 mins, and asus whom ive contacted several times now fob me off , by the time u add the cost of a battery (ebay) you may as well get a better machine, why make a portable ,and a good one , then wast every ones time and money with a copp out battery that in the uk anyway surely will make the laptop not as described or suitable for purchased issue

  25. Lars Says:
