ASUS to offer 5800mAh battery replacement to UK 900 owners

May 30th, 2008 by Jon Bradbury

According to Mobile Computer, ASUS have released a statement regarding the low capacity 4400mAh batteries supplied with the EEE PC 900 model in the UK, which yield a total life of around two hours on a full charge, depending on what the machine is doing.

Effectively, ASUS are to provide an upgrade path. This follows a concerted effort by eeeuser.com forum members, led by user shade360, to lobby ASUS for a battery replacement. The downside is that there is a nominal cost involved (£10 + VAT) and the original 4400 mAh battery has to be returned, but at least UK 900 owners can now opt to enjoy the full 900 experience, as the replacement batteries will be the proper 5800mAh rated items.

According to the press release, “ASUS will release information regarding the detailed procedure in a few days and anticipate the battery purchase service commencing from 10th June 2008.”

About time! All the eeepc mongers accomplished something with their daily complaints.

Fantastic! Sincere thanks to everyone who pressured ASUS about this!

Hmm- a rechargeable AA battery is 2500mAh. Rechargeable C cells are up to 4500mAh, and standard alkalines C’s are up to 8000 mAh.

I’m reminded of my trusty Nikon D70 camera- you can replace the battery in a pinch, with a bunch of CR-23’s. What voltage does the Eee need ? Is it time to fit an external battery pack?

What about UK 701 owners? The 4400mAh battery is still rubbish on these. The Asus website claims misleadingly long battery lives on this model, presumably based on the higher capacity battery, but still knowingly shipped the puny 4400mAh batteries.

Also, instead of making you send the old battery back to get the new battery, presumably for a couple of weeks, preventing you from using your device, why don’t they charge £25 for the new battery, and let you send the old one in for a £15 rebate once you’ve got the new one? I mean, why should the user suffer, given that it’s Asus who supplied an inadequate piece of kit to start with?

What a rip off. Asus should be doing this free of charge.
It’s a step in the right direction but I’m not satisfied with this. The battery supplied does not give the perfomance Asus have quoted. So the end user has to pay extra to get something that they should have had in the first place? Get real Asus.
This isn’t a victory, How much money do people think a battery stands Asus?

    10th today - any news?

I agree that this is a step in the right direction, however why should the eee pc buyer / user have to be without the mobile functionality of their eee pc while waiting for the replacement battery and having to pay extra for the priviledge! Come on ASUS do the right thing and provide the battery that the eee pc 900 needs.

    What about other countries?
Most euroepan countries receive 900s with 4000 mAh batteries :(

The battery swap offer has now expired. I just called Asus who advised that the offer was time limited and expired on July 30th.
