Eee PC™ 901, 1000 and 1000(H) Unveiled at Computex 2008

June 5th, 2008 by OilPainterBill

Asus just did an official press release on the new Atom-based models of the Eee PC. Some of the highlights include Bluetooth, wireless N, and even a “real” 80 GB hard drive in the 1000H model. The prices are $559 for the 901, $629 for the 1000H, and $659 for the 1000 (with 40 GB SSD).

After doing some snooping around, I found this website here:
    http://www.yostore.net/

This looks like the backup solution ASUS is going to be using but they also say that they “will also be offering little surprises from time to time”:

  2. Mehboob Says:

Finally they are increasing the pricing….

  3. RogueStar Says:

well the good news is that the price point of 900 will be pretty much continued into the 901. the bad news is that the price ceiling is continuing to go up as they expand their product lines. now to get a job so that i can get a 901 to go with my 4G.

  4. danMdan Says:

Its a sensible commercial decision to expand the range and have machines at a range of price points from cheap to more expensive. In the end, like any other product, supply and demand will determine the on-street price.

  5. Jim Says:

Lol, there are so many different eeepc models now. From the 2G Surf up to the 1000. Whats that like 10 or 15 models now I lost count that is amazing.

  6. Jim Says:

That 40 gb ssd sounds delicious

  7. Jim Says:

    Longer battery life yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

    BOO YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  8. Jim Says:

Atom cpu, bluetooth, holy crap these puppies keep getting better and better

  9. eeeuser101 Says:

I could say that the increased prices start to defeat the original idea, but as long as they continue to offer a range, then hey, whatever. For people who want more functionality in a small form factor and don’t mind paying a bit more, they have options. For people who don’t have extensive needs, but could use some of the basics like having the internet and a couple other programs available, the idea of the original 701 type models more than suffice, and at price points that work.
The whole idea here is the small form factor, and making a small form factor that suits a wide range of needs seems fine; just as long as they do indeed still continue to offer the lower cost range as well.

  10. peinz0r Says:

The eeepc 900 should be $455 to $499 no more than that!

  11. paradoxb3 Says:

“The eeepc 900 should be $455 to $499 no more than that!”

It should, but it probably wont until we see a surge of 901’s in retailers. That wont be anytime really soon, so i went ahead and ordered my 900 (black!) for the current $549.

  12. gore Says:

Does anyone know when these are expected to be released? I can’t wait to get my hands on the 1000.

  13. Greg Says:

I have a 3lb Dell D430 that I paid $1,300 for a year ago and I was delighted to get it. Also a year ago most of the “UMPCs” were selling between $600-$1,200. Now we’ve got, what I consider to be, superior, “netbooks” springing up all over the place for $300 - $659. I’m not complaining.

  14. Holme Says:

And ASUS are back on track. Not as bad pricing as the first rumors, especially not if you get a whooping 40GB SSD for the expensive model. I’d actually consider buying it.

  15. rico rocket Says:

    The 900 is tempting. ($549)
paradoxb3! the black one is it for me too.
But dont you think we wait for the 901 reviews?
If 901 is at $559.. i think 10 bucks wont be that big a gap.
    phew!

  16. Art La Flamme Says:

[...] of Ubuntu that would also work on the Asus Eee PC. I went and read up on the Asus Eee line, the new 901 and higher series machines they just announced, and I just about soiled myself. Less than 1 kg in weight. Up to 20 GB of solid [...]

  17. nblake Says:

Just took the plunge on a black 900 (linux) from Amazon - now let’s hope it didn’t go from “in stock” to “on back order” in the 20 seconds from when I saw it to when I pushed the button.

That’s the model I’ve been waiting for from the the minute they were first announced…

  18. arcpawn Says:

The 7.8 hour battery life, which is the most impressive part of this release, sounds a little suspicious…see the - *Exact battery life subject to actual usage and model” at the bottom. That makes sense, but what does “are also equipped an expanded battery that provides up to 7.8 hours* of battery life” mean? A totally different battery on 1000 makes sense, but does this include the 901? The caveats on this just keep coming if it depeds on which GUI modes you are in too? I’m not buying this 7.8 battery life story…and I’m not waiting to buy a 901 or 1000…

  19. Jacques Says:

Finally there is the 10″ I am waiting for but what is the resolution? 80GB and the atom processor of 1.6Ghz are good. 7hrs battery life is great. 2GB RAM good. Price if at AUD $650 and under good I will get it. So basically at that price I am only paying for a not very fast notebook but just the small size and long battery session portability. So Asus to wake up to itself as far as the price tag goes. 20 years ago a 10MB HDD computer will cost $1000s and today it worth jack shit, so let’s not compare the price of yesterday and that of today. Today everyone is either tightass poms or cheap chinese. Now I can also wait and see what will come next after Eee1000 and beyond. That is where things really started to get interesting. I wasn’t impressed with Eee700 at all for all its shortcomings and Fisher-Price long 7″ screen to be honest. the Eee900/901 rubbed me off the wrong way too with it ridiculous pricing. From the beginning the USD$199 was lotsa bull!

  20. Quigonjr Says:

I don’t think that the Intel Atom is that impressive, the Celeron is actually just as fast. The 901 also looks ugly compared to the 900. So what if the keyboard is 92 percent as big as a normal one. I bought a Eee because of the size. The only new Eee-model I really like is the 1000, because it has a 40 Gb ssd. But it is too expensive though. I thought the meaning and purpurse of the machine was to be a ultrasmall, ultracheap, wifi connectivity and long batterylife - not to compete with the Vaio Tz….

  21. Matt Says:

I’m glad to hear about the pricing on the 901; I’ve been mulling over buying an Eee for months, and that is the one that has the specs that I want. FWIW, I never expected the higher-end Eees to be anywhere near the USD$199 mark.

Is there any word on when the 901 will be available in the US?

  22. Timmaaaaa Says:

I’m feeling that Eee 1000H model. I jizzed all over myself when I read about it. I can’t wait to order it. I just got rid of my piece of chit 4G.

  23. Timmaaaaa Says:

It will be highly interesting to see the actual battery life output.

  24. jonny Says:

    No touch screen?

  25. Darmok Says:

I was gifted a 4G and love it! I work in a very vibration filled environment and the 4G fills the job i need it to do nicely. The SSD based 1000 sounds really nice but I’m going to wait for it to be out for at least a couple months before even considering getting one. Why be the first one on the block when you can wait for all the wrinkles to be ironed out and the price-point to settle. Besides after the initial excitement wears off…. there should be some popping up in the classifieds - as the techno-addicts move on to the next big thing. (May i point out the whole I-Phone price snafu!) If Anyone want’s to complain about the screen being Fisher-Priceish….. May I direct you to the toy section at Local Wal-mart and then you can get back to me :P

  26. Red in brux Says:

I have had my 900 (20G w/XP Pro and 2gig RAM) for about a month now and I love it. I am however, starting to wonder if I still should have waited a bit longer for the 1000 version… Any ideas when it will actually be available to buy? Neitehr the 901 or the 1000 are even on the ASUS website yet….

  27. pmoo Says:

Any news if EEE 901 going to have built in 3G/HSPDA module? UMPC suppose to make it as portable and connectivity options as possible. I’m not really care to have WiMAX at the moment, coz most part of the world still dun hv the infrastructure.

Complains on the keyboard size is ridiculous as well. 10.2″ screen ppl complain too bulky, 8.9″ ppl complain keyboard to small. It’s not possible to hv a full size keyboard on this tiny pc.

I’m not particular on the keyboard size as well. It should be use as a sub-note. For daily use I already have my 12″ IBM. I like EEE coz of the portability. i can throw it in my luggage while i’m traveling w/o carrying additional notebook bag.

I’ll get EEE immediately soon as it comes w/ built in 3G.

  28. Jim Says:

No touchscreen, it is now allowed!

  29. Trav Says:

Hmm… these EEE’s are looking the goods for my ultra portable, I’ve only ever had the standard laptop’s through my life.

Just one thing on the 901, is 12GB really enough for XP???
I’ll have it connected to an external 40GB 2.5″ drive, so should be ok.

And just one more thing, this time on the 1000H, with a 40GB SSD, what is the life expectancy of a SSD and if something goes wrong, can it be replaced or is this when a standard 2.5″ HDD is good for exchanging?

I think the 1000H is a great price and only an extra $100 over the 901, so it’s worth the extra investment, however size & SSD are important factors, what do you guys think?

  30. Don Says:

The 1000H is the model with the 80 GB HD. The 1000 is the one with the 40 GB SSD.

As far as 12 GB being enough, LOL, that’s a puny storage capacity.

Just be glad you didn’t buy the 2G model. It has only……. are you ready………. 2 GB!!

That’s right. It is real and no joke, a 2 GB laptop.

  31. Trav Says:

Geez us I feel sorry for all those 2GB EEE PC dudes, who would have ditched it by now I’m sure.

Sorry I got the models confused, so now on the 1000 with the 40GB SSD, this is the one that comes pre-installed with Linux right? I’m not big on Linux and would want XP for compatibility, so would installing XP be a problem?

Also what’s the average life of a SSD??

  32. ohxten Says:

Gee, these things are getting pretty expensive. The 701 model looks nice, and it’s under $400. $560 for a 901? I know that it’s specs are beefed up, but I think it’s just too much to spend.

  33. Blondeee Says:

Anybody seen (or got a guess) when the 901 will be available? Also, anybody seen a spec sheet with Battery, weight & dimension info?

  34. Lee Says:

I have had my 4G 701 for about six and a half months now. I got it when it first became available. And at this point I see no reason to jump ship just because bigger better models are available. Yes, I gotta tell you the 901 and 1000 models are tempting but at this point the 701 (advanced mode) handles all of my needs, so why upgrade? As much as I try to justify it, I just can’t find a reason. Maybe in a year or two, who knows.

  35. Tomislav Says:

How will Apple justify hefty price tag for SSDs in their MacAir after EEE1000? In Apple’s calculation, 64GB SSD costs almost as much as two EEEs 1000…

  36. susumu kuraba Says:

i bought 2G surf a few months ago and i’m stisfied with it. i can install XP in it along with office 2003 plus antivirus software and that are all i needed for daily use. for file storage, i use a 4GB SD Card.

  37. arcpawn Says:

The new iPhone has more capabilities than the previous version and is half the price…ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION ASUS!

  38. jezhill Says:

Increasing the range of products makes heaps of sense given the spectacular success of the eee. Tomislav I think you’ve nailed it - the EEE1000 is aimed at the Air. To add to the chorus, it would be great to see the bottom end receive some attention. I bought my 4G purely because I got decent change for 500AUD, and would not have spent more for a 900 even if it had been available at the time. 702 perhaps? For ~399AUD with a ~10GB SSD?

  39. miro Says:

The Eee PC 900(Linex 20GB) is about $491 (14900NT) now in Taiwan.

  40. Brad Says:

That’s cheap. I may have to order some.

  41. Brad Says:

I’ll get a few of the 900 while waiting for the upcoming 1000 model to come out.

I’m not sure if I should get the 1000 also or just wait for the next model after the 1000. I wonder how soon that one will come out. My crystall balls predict that there will be a crapload of models by Christmas.

I love collecting all these laptops.

  42. Michael Spencer Says:

Same here, never in a million years would I have thought that one of my hobbies would interestingly be laptops. I own a 4G, 8G, 900, and soon the 1000. I’m buying these as if they are baseball cards or something, lol. However, ASUS is rolling out so many models so quickly that I don’t know if my bank account can keep up with this.

  43. Michael Spencer Says:

I decided to skip the 901 model since I already have the 900, but for sure I want that 1000 model. When the 1001 model comes out with I’m guessing a 64MB SSD, I will probably end up buying that also.

  44. hrt Says:

Seriously, when will the 901 come out in north america, or better yet, where can I get it from taiwan. I want a black one right now, but whats asus doing!

  45. Jack Says:

Too expensive! I will not be buying a 900 until it goes down in price. It should sell for $225.

When the 901 model comes out, they should lower the price of the 2G to $100, the 4G to $120, the 8G to $140, and the 900 to $150.

I refuse to be financially raped by Asus. There’s no way I’m spending that much.

  46. Adam Says:

Just wait a few more months. The 2G should go down in price probably to around $50 while the 4G and 8G will come in at $75 and $100, respectively. Everything is bound to come down in price. Be patient and wait awhile. I own a 4g, and it’s a nice laptop.

  47. Joe Bob Fish Says:

$50??? good luck with that. at that rate, i could break them like nobodys business.

  48. Gorgeous George Says:

gone are the days when we flocked to this site to check out the $200 notebook that weighed two pounds. they have come so far along now, and i’m even thinking about upgrading from the 4G to the new ones.

  49. hrt Says:

Have you seen dells new offering? Similar branding.

  50. pmoo33 Says:

MSI wind have identical specs with EEE 1000H just less ram. Just wondering is there anyone willing to spend $130 for EEE over wind (suggested $499 or $399 for linux version). Why ASUS is so expensive?

  51. Lamarr Says:

In response to the guy above, it’s because MSI jumped on board later. Therefore, they must find a way to detract interest in their main competitor which is ASUS, the company responsible for popularizing said small laptops. The strategy that they came up with is to price their laptop at rock bottom prices.

  52. Anonymous Reader Says:

Needs to be lower power use, and Sunlight readable screen (like OLPC)

They need to license the tech from Pixel Qi - a look at Pixel Qi’s web site really spells out exactly what we need in a mobile device.

AND we need touch screen and is we have touch screen, we do not need the touch pad. AND we will RUN Ubuntu Remix on this too!

There was one device at Computex that caught my eye, and that had a new AMD processor that could be run in a “non-turbo” mode to save power. When you needed higher graphics you could then run it in “turbo” mode (the AMD Processor had ATI-graphics built in).
    See:

    Pixel Qi’s web site:

  54. pmoo33 Says:

The Wind is delayed again. Why MSI cant get 6 cell battery while Asus Manage to get? I think MSI realized that $499 is to low to put in a 6 cells battery. So they reduce the price to $479 for 3 cells. I bet next month when MSI ship with 6 cells battery Wind. It will cost more then $499.

  55. PriceIsEverything Says:

Well, I think Asus forgot the basics. If you charge more than $500 for an entry-level notebook, why people will have to buy yours?

The EEE 900 is nice but the price tag is ridiculous. For $549, I can buy a well equipped brand-name notebook. Actually, I just bought a compaq from Bestbuy for $419 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8780081&type=product&id=1204332500697)

Sure, it is a 15.4 inch. However, similar products out there are way cheaper and better than eee 90x. MSI wind costs only $399 and $499. And hear this, the boot time actually is faster than EEE 901 — “We recently tested the new Eee PC 901 with XP and, despite its 20GB SSD, it takes 40 seconds to boot as compared to the 32-34 we get from the Wind.” (http://blog.laptopmag.com/msi-wind-no-faster-with-ssd)

Yes, the SSD may be crash proven. But the SSD in EEE 90x will go bad way before you crash a HD in any notebook today.

I never like the 7-inch version of eee. The screen is way too small for me. However, I like the screen size of eee 90x. So why can’t Asus just produce a version with just 2G or 4G SSD but with the 8.9-inch screen? Then they can just leave that expansion slot in the back for the user to add their own SSD or HD? I bet you they can because all they need to do is just taking out that second-grade SSD from the 90x, and lower the price.

But why they can not do just that? So they can sell you an over-priced entry notebook.

  56. Kris Johnson Says:

I am pumped about this laptop! A lot of solid sources are claiming that it’s a great purchase, affordable and a good buy overall. Anyone have experience using the Asus EEE?
