Eee PC 901 12G- Amazon.com Best Seller in Computers

by ant on July 27, 2008

It looks like the Eee PC models are continuing to be strong in the marketplace, as the Eee PC 901 12G is currently the most popular item in the Computers & PC Hardware category of Amazon.com Also rounding out the top 10 are the Eee PC 900 16G (white, Linux) in 7th spot and the Eee PC 900 16G (black, XP) in 9th. The Eee PC 1000H just missed the cut in 12th place.

I guess the 1000H missed it because hasnt been long since its launch? or why would the 12g be better?

ant July 27, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Dragonduster: I think it’s partly that, but probably more because of: “Usually ships within 1 to 2 months” and price. People are probably picking it up at Newegg, etc.

It is very, very impressive to see so many Linux based laptops in the Top 25 at amazon!

This was unthinkable just 1 year ago. The revolution has started :-)

I love my Black (12gb, XP) 901!

I pared down the installation, removing all the unnecessary crap, and have over a 1gb left on C: and plenty of room on D:

I have BBC iPlayer, CorelDRAW X3!, VLC, OpenOffice, MSN Messenger, etc, installed and works like a treat.

I upgraded the memory to 2gb and added a 16gb SDHC card for movies (using the excellent AnyDVD / DVD Clone Mobile).

The battery life really is amazing. Used on a 2.5hrs each way return train journey over the weekend, I watched two movies and surfed (yes, some UK trains have free wi-fi) and still didn’t need to charge the battery.

Only downside is the finger prints on the black glossy finish – but it does come with a cloth to lovingly restore it to its pristine condition! I think the white model would show up less fingerprints.

For a lot of people this could be the only computer they need. Actually, I think I get better performance on this than my aged Pentium 4 desktop.

Now if only they could put an 80gb HDD in the 901 – it would be perfect. (I now they are releasing a 903/904 or whatever but that has not got the Atom CPU.)

After reading a lot of review i am going to get asus eee in the next couple of days. I will buy it at compusa website because it is said to provide a better support. Just in case you missed it, now even BestBuy is selling the asus Eee 901. i like this store a lot and i am undecided if buying the eee from them or stay with my other decision. Anyway, so far, the Eee is the best one as far as number of people who bought it, websites speaking about it and communities talking about way to tweak and hack it. I think that when you buy an ultraportable you have always to keep into consideration the amount of people who has got it and the number of blogs giving support just in case something goes wrong!

the only thing holding me back is the puny storage. put in a MINIMUM of a 40 gb ssd sooooon!

no more of these 2, 4, 12, 20 gb crap, thats not enough

jerom July 28, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Don’t buy an eee 900 16G !
It’s a scam, cannot even type text correctly because it’s so slow with the crap 16G SSD only (missing the old fast 4gb drive, the XP version looks even worse than Linux)…
Even the eee 2G was better and more reactive.
They don’t even want me to return it (Newegg or Asus) but I’ll do it anyway.
Stay away from it!

lops July 28, 2008 at 9:31 pm

jerom, I have 900 model and it is working like a charm. Try to replace it and don’t create statements like “Don’t buy an eee 900 16G ! It’s a scam” in future based on only your personal experience..

Dragonduster July 28, 2008 at 11:18 pm

i think jerom is the scammer here >O since a lot of ppl have good experience with their 900, unless he wanted a dual core or something like that in the eee

jerom July 29, 2008 at 8:13 am

Do you have the 900 16G model as I do? (without the fast 4gb SSD) Or the previous 900 12G/20G model? (with it)

Sorry for the title indeed but I felt really disappointed, and most Amazon customers will. (If it’s in the top10 sellers – doesn’t deserve it at all.)

First of all Asus should not label with same reference “900″ different models and computing
experiences. They shouldn’t get away with it. I thought it was a good deal based on the reviews of the other 900 *different* models – and that’s the trick.
This 16G is barely usable, honestly. (Want a youtube video? Even typing into the terminal is slow and non responsive in Linux, and the XP version looks worse – as if Asus themselves did not try it before putting it into the market?!…)

Not asking for a dual core here, just for the same experience as I had with the eee 2G and a trustworthy notebook (for my father originally but I’m so ashamed of this box/failure I can’t handle it to someone else…)

Any solution out there to make it usable? (tried ramlog, no swap, etc…)

jerom July 29, 2008 at 8:19 am

Or it’s defective maybe!?… (Bios/keyboard interface problem? The Asus tech support was unreachable after 30minutes yesterday night.)
I know I shouldn’t base on my only experience but my advice is definitely : “try it before buying it”!

jerom July 29, 2008 at 9:15 am

No indeed, looks like “eee 900 16G” don’t ship with the same disk!…
That’s why lots of people are happy with it and some (like me) are not.
Unacceptable from Asus.

See http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=36739

Don’t call me a scammer ever again and mind your own business.

Jarv July 30, 2008 at 1:50 am

Despite it not shipping with the same disk, my experience is practically mirrored. And I’m not aware that Asus stated they would release the same disk. They are all different models, with mobility and cost at the core of development.

As for minding our own business, dude your posting negitive biased comments on a website filled with happy buyers of the Eee line. This is everyones community, if you want people to stay out of your business don’t be so hasty.

Anyway, Thanks for the new posts, always love to know how the Eee scene is moving, Considering a new Eee soon.

Dragonduster July 30, 2008 at 3:42 am

well dont give a bad impresion of the eee when u got a bad one or u fail at using it >O and NEVER call them scammer

asdf July 30, 2008 at 8:25 pm

You guys should relax. Perhaps calling the 16G a scam is slightly far fetched, but Jerom does have a point. The 16G is well documented by users to perform very sluggishly, almost the point of making it unusable. Furthermore, Asus has not been straightforward at all with information about their SSD specs (16G being slower than the 2G model, 12G having a fast 4GB and a slow 8GB HD.) I certainly would be upset if I bought the 12G and finding out that I can’t install the software I need because I have two small drives to work with instead of one 12G.

John G. (UK) July 31, 2008 at 5:20 am

I don’t think anyone is suggesting an EEE PC is a desktop replacement. Browse, email, maybe a little Word or Excel and watching films. I can do all this on my XP 12g 901 and it’s plenty fast enough. Even iTunes which is sluggish on my old desktop PC is definitely usable. All for less than 300quid. I think it represents excellent value for money for what it delivers.

However, the new EEE PCs coming along in Sep/Oct accordign to Engadget sound even better…

I currently own the 701 4G and I have enjoyed it since the very first day it came out and I bought it from newegg. I had no plans on upgrading to a 901 until I got to play around with a 12G 901 today. Wow! Although only slightly bigger and same keyboard dimensions the computer just feels more solidly built than my 701 and the bigger screen is pure gold! Sometimes I find myself squinting at my current 701 or raising text font sizes to 16 points or more, but not so with the 901. I’m sold…

My 701 should be jealous. I am typing this right now with it connected to a 19″ monitor at 1024×768. Maybe the 701 will find a good home with my daughter.

may as well wait until the dual core atoms come out.

I am looking for a pink eee for my wife and the only reason it isn’t listed as one of the most popular items is because you can’t find enough of them. There are only a few 2G around and it is only possible to get a 4G pink eee from the auction sites.

They should find a way of ranking interest when the searched items are not available.

Douglas Brown August 13, 2008 at 2:17 am

Be nice if they actually delivered them though!

I pre-ordered mine. Expected delivery was 12 August. Now they are estimating 19 August.

I may look into the terms and conditions of the pre-order. I am happy to pay the ‘early adopter’ prices, but only if I get the thing whilst it is still somewhat cutting edge.

Above comment was re: Amazon uk by the way.

Leah August 13, 2008 at 2:23 pm

The Eee is coming into popuklar knowledge even more than before. Right now, the Royal Bank of Canada has put up a new promo; where before they used to advertise free iPods for switching to them, the new promotion they’re advertising on TV is one of the Eee 701s for switching to them. Hope Eeeuser can bring us the details about this soon.

Awaiting Stock August 30, 2008 at 11:19 am

It might be the best seller on the Amazon Website, but I’ve been waiting for a month for it to be delivered and I wonder if it’s ever going to be in stock in any of the reliable online shops! loads of 701 and 900 floating around, no 901 20GB’s

rola September 2, 2008 at 4:55 am

Asus eee pc computer is super laptop computer, but I hope I can have another eee pc battery replacement with high capacity

andy September 15, 2008 at 6:34 pm

does anyone have any experience loading audio files from a digital voice recorder to an Eee PC?

I’m pretty sure it will work if one has the Windows version of Eee PC, but does anyone know if it works with the Linux programing?

My ideal system for doing interviews would be: a digital recorder –> linux EeePC –> USB flash drive. Is this possible/good/stupid?

Thanks for any help,
Andy

Artis September 16, 2008 at 3:21 am

They are not linux based, thay are with bigger hdd. The first thing I did, was installed XP professional on my EEE 901.
Noone uses the stupid linux anyway, its just preinstalled so you can check that your computer is working, start firefox and understand that NOTHING is working as it is supposed to work. You can not find file manager, remote desktop, and averything else. The firefox, that was preinstalled, was the bigest crap I have ever seen, It was 10x slower that the IE on my windows. So I dont understand, what people have found in linux.

Fritz Pinguin March 29, 2009 at 12:29 pm

@Artis: Learn to use a reasonable system and you will see what it is good for. And I am not talking about this Windows crap.
