wow quiet expensive…. looks like a nice second laptoppy
though its not worth the 700 buck plus taxes….i rather weait and get me the dual-core touch screen
P.S. btw no info on the euro release date? offtopic i dislike you cant re-edit your messages
the keyboard goes all the way to the edge which is nice, but they could of put bigger screen on it. It just doesn’t look that good compared to the keyboard…
they could of also put the speakers next to the screen…so it sounds decent..
It looks like the Acer Aspire One but double the price.
nice laptop but the puny storage is downright awful. i prefer a hard drive with much more storage space.
So it seems that, after all, the linux support was just a ploy to get some discounts from microsoft, because all “netbook” manufacturers but dell are back to their same-old windows pushing.
What a joke.
I have to admit that thing looks sweet! Ditch the joke storage and put a real 160GB HDD in there.
There’s not much difference between the S101 and the 1000 besides the looks. For $700, how about upping the specs some, like bumping the memory to 2GB RAM. This isn’t unreasonable considering how cheap memory is these days.
They’re getting further and further away from the price point that made the EEE so attractive in the first place. Looks like a rush job to compete with the Apple Air by Christmas.
So…N10 vs S101? Pros/cons?
This is NOT a netbook. I don’t care if it is powered by an Atom. It should not have the Eee moniker. It should just be an Asus laptop.
N10 = glossy screen, massive storage
S101 = matte screen, tiny storage
Atom processor, little difference vs. the 1000 models aside from aesthetics. It’s an Eee netbook regardless of what they call it, just like the N10. Between the two the N10 at least offers some real advantages, although both are poor values vs. the 1000H.
$700?
really? I’d rather get a somewhat larger/heavier 14.1″ Used thinkpad for $400 off of Ebay.8.9″ was pushing it for a small netbook. For $300 less I’d get an Optical drive, equal or better processor and decent Linux compatibility too. I’d be happy to lose some battery life for that kind of cash.
with that price i would get 2 netbook instead, im not goin to buy this for sure, i dont need the looks, just the usability.
this is a very disappointing step for asus, especially within the eee family, my 900 is ashamed to be associated.
only supplying windows is the first biggie, part of what has given the eee range so much support are the dedicated linux users that range from seeing the details of how to make it run smooth to making all sorts of radical changes and upgrades possible for the end user. if asus only supply windows, what’s to say it will even run without modification so the less experienced linux users are out, and as for hardware there won’t be any native support so experienced users are in less plentiful supply too, meaning this is a dead duck for eeeasy stuff, it’s just a windows lappy.
the 10″ screen is just to satisfy spec hunters, somehow all the people that sneered at the 7″ and 8.9″ screens were mistakenly treated as customers, the eee’s are supposed to be small and cheap, with specs yes but not at the expense of the simplicity, such as the lack of optical, that’s a goood thing, so the responses to the s101 so far should make it clear that the spec hunting tribes aren’t any more satified than the true eee demographic with what the s101 has to offer.
it seems obvious enough that the price is increased, the communities that hold together new and experienced users are out, the specs are just being pushed around by the users that couldn’t care less what eee stands for, litrally or otherwise. just say no.
i agree with all of wat u said except the 10″ screen. it makes it so the keyboard is manageable, and its still in the same range.
Asus got it’s head up microsoft’s a$$ How many more laptops do we need riddled with windos. You’ve made an attempt at using the alternative and they flew off the shelf. Just how much is microsoft paying to bundle a 8 year old OS?
According to the spec it does support linux:

Well, for that figure there are better choises. Have a look here. Th elist is regularly updated

whats better than the s101 is the new 1002ha
it looks the same but has a whopping 160 GB storage!
This website came in with a bang and a lot of activity when the original Asus eeePC hit the market…back when the economy was still good….at three or four hundred bucks. Now that they’ve moved to the six and seven hundred dollar pricepoint, they’re no longer unique, and the economy is going south. This post on the S101 has been up so long that I think it ought to be memorialized as the headstone to the eeePC line.
Enjoy.
ASUS is smokin, releasing like 20 models in over a year. They are releasing new models as if they grow on trees. I already have 3 models so far and will be getting my 4th model, the 1002ha. These things are fun to collect.
so? no linux version yet? this this is a beauty. theyll come out with a smaller one soon. it was probably hard to make one this thin without making it a little wider…
but will the linux one be out by christmas?????????????/
No linux? Screw em!
