The "target price" of the XO (OLPC machine) is meaningless. What matters is the price. And it's currently $200 if you buy it in lots of 10,000+ and $400 if you can find it invidually (buy one get one). The Eee (for example, 901 with a 6-cell battery, 6+ hours of battery life, 8.9" screen, running Linux is $274 if you buy one and probably about $250 or less if you buy it in bulk. So for a single unit, the Eee is actually cheaper. For a large order, the prices aren't that different.

There may be other reasons to prefer the XO, but the comments here about price are very misleading.

Is this study fair ? The source article let you understand that the study has been "corrupted by Intel".

The XO OLPC consumes 10 to 50 times less and cost 50 to 100 $.

The point in Africa is not how powerful your new laptop is, but do you have a reliable computer or not.

We don't need powerful computers. 10 years back, computers were not so powerful, and eveybody found it so fast and useful. Don't be fooled by the marketing sirens of Intel & Microsoft.

Too bad the Eee costs about 4 times the target price ($100) for the OLPC machine. This article is one of the most idiotic things I've read, since price was THE major issue with the OLPC initiative.

In other news, I've gone through extensive research, and determined that a Range Rover is superior to a mule in speed, power, and cargo capacity. Clearly this shows that no matter what African villages' transportation needs are, the Range Rover is the best choice for them.
