On Thursday, April 23rd, Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, released the Netbook Remix of Ubuntu (fully tested on the Acer Aspire One, Dell Mini 9, and the Asus Eee PC 1000) to the public. Also released on the same day were the Desktop and Server Editions of Ubuntu 9.04.
Canonical had this to say about the Netbook Remix on their Ubuntu Blog:
“Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix comes with faster boot speeds, and with a built-for-purpose interface that means that favorite applications and websites are just a click away. Ubuntu Netbook Remix makes a great choice for netbook users.”
Canonical COO Jane Silber said, “The latest feature enhancements in Ubuntu 9.04 Netbook Remix are particularly well suited to the requirements of netbook fans. Faster boot speeds, enhanced power-management features and easier switching between networks delivers the best netbook end-user experience available for download today.”
Also, for the first time, users can download the complete Ubuntu Netbook Remix to a USB flash drive directly from Ubuntu.com. Users can then install and run Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a wide range of the most popular netbook machines available on the market today.
Canonical also mentioned on the Ubuntu Blog, “Ubuntu Netbook Remix offers an enhanced user experience with more intuitive icons, consistent notifications across applications and numerous design changes that give the product more visual appeal.“

The 9.04 NBR launcher is very unresponsive on my eeepc 900 (Celeron-M, single 16G SSD).
Apps seem to run OK (eg Firefox). Just the launcher that’s slow.
Anyone else seeing this?
Yes — I am seeing a lag also.
You are right about apps vs launcher. The apps run fine.
In the launcher, cursor seems to respond slowly, in lurches, like the screen is updating often enough.
I’m trying UNR 9.04 right now. Maybe it’s a greatest for netbooks from all ‘universal’ ones.
Works like a charm on my 900a – and thats running it installed from a class 6 SD card! The only thing that I have found that doesn’t work is the webcam. Nice and fast, fantastic choice of apps through the repos – a definite keeper!
just tested this on my 701, i am also seeing the lag when in the launcher, i thought it was because of the slow performance of the SD card?
It won’t connect to my wpa2 wireless connection. I’ve tried all the old remedies, but no luck.
The launcher is very laggy on my 701 also
The issue with the lag you are seeing has to do with the X server not using a driver for display.
Edit your etc/X11/xorg.conf file to look like this:
Section “Device”
Identifier “IntelCard”
Driver “intel”
VendorName “Intel Corporation”
BusID “PCI:0:2:0″
Option “AccelMethod” “exa”
Option “MigrationHeuristic” “greedy”
EndSection
Section “Monitor”
Identifier “Configured Monitor”
EndSection
Section “Screen”
Identifier “Default Screen”
Monitor “Configured Monitor”
Device “IntelCard”
EndSection
That should speed up the interface and should allow for smoother scrolling and better 2d and 3d support.
I added the four lines below: (yes, all four both – intrepid and jaunty is required to update to kde3-series) to the netbook remix edition and installed KDE3.
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kde3-maintainers/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
trust me it is blazing fast compared to netbook edition.
the lag is fixed if you install these:
linux-headers-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.43~lp349314apw5_i386.deb 21-Apr-2009 19:06 670K
and
linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic_2.6.28-11.43~lp349314apw5_i386.deb 21-Apr-2009 19:06 24M

fixed it for me!
Thx for tip eee4ever, fixed it for me too!
I downloaded and installed 9.04 netbook remix on my 900A yesterday. I’m very impressed with it; works way better than the Linux build that came installed on the thing. As a Mac user and linux noob, I’m also impressed with the installation instructions that were included on the Ubuntu website. Took me some experimentation, but I got the OS loaded onto a flash drive and onto my eee without a lot of trouble. Connects with my wireless (WPA) and is much faster and better looking than the Debian build from the factory.
no problem, here to help
