Eee PC 4G In Color

Thursday, February 7th, 2008 by ant

If you’ve been waiting to buy your Eee PC 4G in Green, Blue, or Pink; you’re in luck! The Pink version is already available as a special Valentines Day edition which, in my opinion, is a much better way of saying “I love you” than grocery store flowers or candy to the one you love.

The Green and Blue versions are just around the corner (according to htlounge)- they’ll be the same as the 2G surf colors- but with the extra features of the 4G including larger battery and webcam. Hopefully these new colors will allow the retailers to keep more regular 4G units in stock, it seems as though they sell out quite quickly!

Next Eee PC Country: Russia

Friday, February 1st, 2008 by ant

I honestly didn’t even realize that the Eee PC hadn’t been officially released in Russia yet, but apparently it hasn’t! There’s a pretty huge following online, and we even have a Russian language section on our forum.

No worries, though, as the Eee PC will finally officially be released in March. Stores will receive the 4G version, as it traditionally is released first in each new country. You can read the article in Russian here.

[thanks again, Romashka!]

If you’re interested in seeing photos of the upcoming Eee PC accessories, the guys over at the French Eee PC website blogeee.net have plenty of up close shots.

I personally like seeing the 6 cell 7800 mAh battery… the only question- will it still fit in the 4G slip case?

Windows XP Eee PC Coming to USA February or March

Thursday, January 24th, 2008 by ant

CNET has an interesting note at the bottom of their article about the recent Japanese launch of the Eee PC 4G-X (which comes with Windows XP preinstalled instead of Linux). It states for USA availability:

Asus originally promised we’d have the Windows version of the tiny Asus Eee PC in December. The Taiwan-based company now says we can expect it in late February or early March. [link]

So, for those of you waiting for Windows to be pre-installed, it could be just a little over a month away.

Eee PC and HSDPA Bundle in France

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008 by ant

For those interested in having HSDPA on their Eee PC, French carrier SFR has a bundle just for you. It includes a white ASUS Eee PC 4G and a HSDPA modem together for €299 (or $435 usd).

The interesting aspect of this is that SPF pledges to give back €100 back if you’re willing to sign a contract for HSDPA service.

Unfortunately, the modem uses the USB slot instead of being fully integrated into the Eee PC. As we reported back in December, Not all of the latest Eee PC’s have the internal mini-PCIe connector anymore. As a result, there’s no easy way to simply snap in an internal wireless card.

It does make you think about several questions- Would any US based carriers offer a solution like this? Would it be worth it? Could a carrier offer a free Eee PC with wireless contract? Did ASUS remove the mini-PCIe connector so certain carriers could do something like this?

Further Details on the Eee touchscreen

Monday, January 21st, 2008 by astern

Reading further into the Digitimes story on Asus adding touchpanel screens into the Eee, PocketLint suggests that the panels will be the four-wire type adding just US$15 to the BOM.

“The 9-inch touch panel-equipped Eee PCs will adopt “four-wire resistive touch screen technology” adding just $15 to the manufacturing cost of the new tablet-esque gadget.”

While less precise than the five-wire garden-variety panel, the touchscreen interface is a much anticipated addition that would further add to the image of the Eee as a competitor to the recently introduced MacBook Air in the ultra-portable laptop category.
